Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, one of your LTE teachers, and we are happy that you have
joined us here today.
Our topic is still PEOPLE.
And we have part 2 of our lesson - Bad News and Good News.
Bad News and Good News.
Nathan, did we talk about good or bad news yesterday?
Well, yesterday we talked about some bad news.
Ken's favorite restaurant Sunny's is closing, and Susie's favorite TV character
died.
Bad news.
Well, friends, my name is Nathan.
I'm very glad to be with you today.
Now it is time to look in your LTE magazine and find today's Let's Begin
reading.
Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
The TV station won three awards!
One is for the station's website design.
The web designers did well!
The station won the second award for a news story.
It was about a community's hope to find a lost girl.
The third award is for Ken because he's a great cameraman!
He was upset earlier, but this news will cheer him up!
It's great to talk about some good news.
Let's get started in Conversation A.
(Music).
Did you see Ken today, Rob?
Yes. Are you looking for him?
No. I saw him, too.
He looked upset.
He is.
His favorite restaurant is closing.
Oh. That's too bad.
He'll be OK.
Hey, guys, I have good news!
You do?
What is it, Carol?
The TV station won three awards!
Well, I guess Ken is still unhappy about yesterday's bad news.
Mark saw him and he knew something was wrong.
Yes.
So he asked Rob if he had also seen Ken.
Rob has known Ken longer than Mark.
Maybe Rob would know why Ken looked upset.
And Rob does know why Ken is upset.
But let's look at that word.
It's today's first key word.
upset.
upset.
If you are upset, you are not happy and you may be very sad or angry.
But you can't tell if a person is upset by looking at them.
It is very clear sometimes.
Sometimes you don't know.
We show what we are feeling sometimes when we are upset.
Many people get upset when they hear some bad news.
Have you ever moved away from your home?
People can get upset when that happens because they are sad.
People also can get upset when plans change.
If a friend said they would help you with something important but forget to
come, would you get upset?
That might make people angry.
It's too bad when people get upset.
Katie, you said "too bad," like Mark.
What does it mean if something is too bad?
Does that mean it is very, very bad, Katie?
No. We say something is too bad when we wish it hadn't happened.
If a friend cannot go to a party, we may say: Oh, that's too bad.
Or when we hear that someone is sick, we might say that's too bad.
Katie, can we stop talking about bad things?
It's not fun.
Well, yes, we can, because Carol tells Mark and Rob some good news.
She says that the TV station won three awards.
And there's another key word.
win.
win.
If you win something, you are given it because you did something well.
Right.
You might win an award if you are the best basketball player at your school.
You can also win games, which just means that you were better than the other
team.
But in our conversation, the word is "won," W-O-N.
That is the past tense of "win." So you may say that I want to win the contest
next week.
Or you can say, "I won the contest last week." But Carol's news is great.
So let's learn some more about it in Conversation B.
(Music).
Three awards! That's fantastic!
I know!
I'm so excited!
What were the awards for?
Tell us more!
Our website won an award for its design.
Our web designers will be proud!
They should be!
I'm proud, too!
We got another award for one of our news stories.
Which news story?
The story about the lost little girl.
In Conversation B, we learn why LTE TV won awards.
Everyone is so happy about it, too.
Rob says, "That's fantastic!" That means it's really great.
And Carol is so excited about the news.
And Mark really wants to hear more about it.
He wants to know why they won.
So Carol says: Our website won an award for its design.
That's great news.
But it is also a great sentence.
It's a "Use It!" sentence, and it has a key word in it.
design.
design.
Design is a plan to make something.
Uh, what do you think of when you hear the word design, Katie?
Well, one thing I think of is fashion design.
That's a plan for how to make clothes.
Many designs are pictures and not words, like fashion designs.
What design do you think of, Nathan?
Well, I think of designs for buildings.
Those designs are also pictures.
Now website design is the plan for how a website will look.
That's how LTE TV won an award.
Well, it sounds like their design looks great.
So let's find out some more about it in Conversation C.
(Music).
Oh, yes!
Her whole community helped look for her.
Right. They always had hope!
And they found her!
Wonderful!
So we won the award for great reporting.
That's right!
And what was the third award?
The third award is for our cameraman on that story!
Ken!
Wow! You'll have to tell Ken!
Yes! This news will cheer him up!
Wow, Nathan, that's some really great news.
But before we talk about Ken, let's go back to the second award.
Remember? It's about the news story of the lost little girl.
Mm.
Now friends, you can also say little lost girl, but "lost little girl" is
better.
"Lost" is something that you think about the girl, but "little" is something
that you can just see about her.
Say what you think before what you see in grammar.
Another example is mean old dog.
You think the dog is mean, but you can see that the dog is old.
Now in this news story, the girl's whole community always had hope.
Everyone looked until they found her.
And today we have a great key word to talk about.
hope.
hope.
Hope is the feeling that everything will be OK.
The girl's community always felt that they could find her.
Everyone needs to have hope in their life.
Sometimes bad things happen.
But hope can help you through hard times.
Sometimes it seems like there is no reason for hope.
But if we have a good attitude, we can always have hope that good things will
happen.
Now, hope is also often used as a verb.
If you hope for something, you want it to happen.
I hope that Ken's award will make him feel better.
Me, too.
Now we need to take a look at LTE TV's third award.
We know that it is for Ken. But what did he win for?
Well, Ken is a cameraman.
He used the camera for the story about the girl.
So, Ken may be upset now, but this good news should cheer him up.
And you just used a key word phrase, so let's take a look.
cheer up.
cheer up.
If Ken cheers up, he will feel happy again even though he doesn't feel happy
now.
You can use this phrase in a few ways.
I can say this food will cheer her up.
I put "her" in the middle of the phrase if I'm talking about someone.
But if you're talking to someone, you can just say, "Cheer up!" Don't worry. Be
happy.
Or if your friend is having a bad day, you can do something to cheer that person
up.
You could take them a drink or some food.
Well, friends, we need to review our key words today and see how many of them
you remember.
How about this one?
win.
win.
I won a prize!
It's a new bike!
design.
design.
I like the design of this room.
hope.
hope.
Lee is really sad.
He has no hope.
upset.
upset.
Miss Ma is upset.
Don't bother her.
cheer up.
cheer up.
Things will get better.
Cheer up!
That's good advice for you, friends, if you are feeling unhappy today.
Well, we need to take a short break.
But we have more funcoming.
