Hi, friends.
I have some good news for you.
You are watching Let's Talk in English.
We're going to have some fun today.
My name is Nathan, and I'm one of your teachers here on LTE TV.
Today's topic is PEOPLE.
And we have a new lesson called Bad News and Good News.
Bad News and Good News.
Katie, do you like to hear bad news or good news first?
Well, I think that I like to hear bad news first because after that, you get to
hear good news, which makes you feel better.
Hi, friends.
My name is Katie, and I'm excited for today's lesson.
But we need to get started.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Ken is sad about something.
His favorite restaurant will close soon.
The place is always crowded.
So Ken is surprised by the news.
Susie is also unhappy about something.
And she's mad, too.
Something happened on her favorite TV show.
Well, it looks like we have a lot to learn.
So let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hi, Ken.
Hello, guys.
What's wrong, Ken?
Are you sad about something?
Yes. My favorite restaurant will close soon!
That's too bad.
Which restaurant?
Sunny's!
It's a small place near my apartment.
Why do you like Sunny's?
The food is really good and really cheap.
Oh, I hate it when that happens.
I feel bad for Ken.
Katie, don't you think it's sad when your favorite restaurant or store closes?
Yes, I feel sad when that happens.
But Nathan, we are using today's first key word.
Don't you think we should teach it?
Oh. Yes, we should.
Let's look at the key word together.
sad.
sad.
If you are sad, you feel bad about something.
You may even want to cry.
When we feel sad, it is usually because you wish something did not happen.
But other things can make us sad, too.
Yes. Sad stories or sad songs can make you feel sad even though nothing has
happened to you.
But I sometimes like sad stories.
Do you, Katie?
Well, sometimes I do.
But most of the time I like happy stories.
Now friends, our key word is also in today's Use It sentence.
Are you sad about something?
Are you (blank) about something?
You can use this sentence by putting an adjective in the blank, like: Are you
glad about something?
That's right.
Or, are you mad about something?
You use this sentence to ask about someone's feelings.
Now, friends, do you remember what Ken is sad about?
He is sad because his favorite restaurant will close soon.
And let's look at that key word.
restaurant.
restaurant.
A restaurant is a place where you order food to eat.
People who work at the restaurant make the food for you.
But you can eat there or take the food out.
Do you eat at restaurants or take food out, Nathan?
Well, if I'm eating alone, I usually take food home.
But I eat at restaurants if I'm with other people.
There are many kinds of restaurants to go to, friends.
What kinds of restaurants are there, Katie?
Well, there are restaurants with foods from many different countries.
There are Chinese restaurants, Italian restaurants and Mexican restaurants.
Those are all good restaurants.
But Ken's favorite restaurant is a good kind, too.
Yes. His favorite restaurant is a cheap restaurant.
But why is it closing?
Maybe we'll find out in Conversation B.
(Music).
Why will the restaurant close?
I don't know.
The place is always crowded!
So you must be surprised by the news.
I am.
I eat dinner there a lot!
I'm sorry, Ken.
When did you find out?
This morning.
Susie is sad today, too.
You are? Why?
Is your favorite restaurant closing, too?
We learn that Ken's favorite restaurant is called Sunny's in Conversation A.
Sunny's is closing, but Ken doesn't know why.
Ken says the place is always crowded.
When Ken says the place, he is talking about Sunny's.
But why does he say it that way, Katie?
Well, if you have been talking about a place, you can call it "the place" when
you say something about it.
If I was talking about a hotel I liked, I might say the place is so clean.
And if I was talking about a good grocery store, I could say the place has many
kinds of food.
Now Ken says Sunny's is always crowded.
So Rob thinks that he must be surprised by the news.
And the news is that Sunny's is closing.
But what does "surprised" mean?
Well, let's learn about that key word.
surprised.
surprised.
A person is surprised when they don't expect something to happen.
When you are surprised, you may feel like you can't believe what happened.
Many people eat at Sunny's.
So Ken almost can't believe it will close.
You may feel... Oh!
Nathan, what are you doing?
Were you surprised?
You may feel a little scared when you are surprised.
Oh, well, that is true.
Thank you so much, Nathan.
I'm also a little surprised that Susie is sad.
Let's see why she is sad in Conversation C.
(Music).
No. Someone died.
I'm sorry.
Was it someone in your family?
No. No one in my family died.
Was it a friend?
No, not really.
Who was it?
A character on her favorite TV show died!
So you are unhappy about that?
Yes! And I'm mad, too.
I really like that character!
Well, the show is a drama!
Bad things happen.
Whew!
It was only a TV character that died.
I thought this would be a sad story when Susie said that somebody died.
Well, wait, Nathan, she didn't say somebody died.
She said someone died.
She used a different word.
Well, she did say "someone," and not "somebody." But the words mean the same
thing.
Well, I'm glad that it wasn't a real person who died, too.
But it can still make you unhappy when a good character dies.
I agree.
But let's talk about that key word before we talk about that problem.
unhappy.
unhappy.
Unhappy means not happy.
If you see "un-" at the beginning of a word, it usually means "not" the rest of
the word.
That's good to know; like uncommon, that word means not common.
But if you are unhappy, you are probably sad.
That's right.
You do not feel good if you are unhappy.
And bad things or sad things that happen in TV shows can make you unhappy, like
Susie.
But you may also be mad when you are unhappy.
Susie is not only unhappy, she is also mad about the TV show.
And that's another key word to know, friends.
mad.
mad.
Mad means angry.
If you are mad, you may feel like fighting or yelling.
You might feel that way, but try not to do those things.
If you are mad, it may be a good idea to go for a run, listen to some music or
pray.
Those things can make you feel better.
Those are great ideas, Katie.
It's OK to be mad sometimes, but don't hurt others when you are.
Friends, don't get mad, but we are done with Conversation C, and it's time to
review today's key words.
Here's your first key word.
sad.
sad.
Grace is sad. Her dog died.
restaurant.
restaurant.
Let's eat at the new Chinese restaurant.
surprised.
surprised.
My test score is 100. I'm surprised!
unhappy.
unhappy.
Why is Jenna so unhappy today?
mad.
mad.
Dad is mad. You didn't listen to him.
OK, friends, that was some great practice.
We're going to take a short break now.
(Music).
