Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for joining us here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie, and we hope that you're ready to learn some English with us
today.
Today our topic is still ENTERTAINMENT.
And we have part 2 of our lesson - Do You Like Comic Books?
Do You Like Comic Books?
Nathan, what kind of comics do you like to read?
Well, I don't really read many comic books, but sometimes I do like to read
comic strips in newspapers.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Nathan, and I am your other teacher here on Let's Talk in English.
Now it's time to open up your magazine and read Let's Begin with Katie right
now.
Let's begin!
Mark and Ken are reading comic books.
The covers are interesting.
Can adults read comic books?
Of course!
The Superman and Batman movies are based on comic books.
The first Superman comic book was printed in 1938.
It's a classic!
Susie likes to read cartoons in the newspaper.
Her favorite comic strip is Peanuts.
OK. Let's get started today with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Mark. Hi, Ken.
What are you guys doing?
Hi, Susie.
We're reading comic books.
The covers look interesting.
These comic books are interesting.
Do you read comic books?
No. Aren't comic books just for kids?
No. Anyone can read comic books!
Even adults?
Yes, of course.
Comic books are for all ages.
I read them all the time!
Mark and Ken were talking about comic books yesterday.
And they are still talking about comic books today.
They must really enjoy them.
Today they are also reading a comic book when Susie comes to talk to them.
She says the covers of the comic books look interesting.
Now let's talk about our first key word for today.
cover.
cover.
A cover is the outside of a book.
There is a front cover and a back cover.
Now the cover of a book is usually hard and thick.
The pages inside are very thin.
But some comic books and most magazines, like the LTE magazine, have covers that
are like the pages inside.
But they are still called covers even though they are thin.
And not only books and magazines have covers.
If something is put over another thing, it can often be called a cover.
Yeah. A bowl can have a cover.
And beds also have covers that you sleep under.
Now Susie thinks that the comic books... uh... covers look interesting.
But she thinks that they are just for kids.
But Mark says anyone can read comic books, even adults.
Now let's see what that key word means.
adult.
adult.
When you are not a child anymore, you are called an adult.
An adult is able to work and make money, and they don't need a father and mother
to give them everything they need.
In the United States, you become an adult when you turn 18 years old.
But in other countries, you may have to be older or younger before you are
considered an adult.
Susie thinks that comic books might be too silly for adults.
But when she asks if they are even for adults, Mark says: Yes, of course.
Now we say "of course" to answer questions.
It means something is true and the question does not always need to be asked.
So when can we say "of course," Nathan?
Well, if someone asks you, "Can I ask you a question?" you can say,
"Of course." That means yes, you can always ask me a question; you don't have to
ask.
Oh, yes, that is very polite.
Now Nathan, can we go to Conversation B now?
Oh, you... you want to go to Conversation B now?
Well, of course.
Let's do that now.
(Music).
Did you see Batman and Superman?
Of course! I saw those movies.
Batman and Superman are super!
The movies are based on comic books.
That's right.
I forgot about that.
The first Superman comic book was printed in 1938!
Wow. Superman is really old!
You're right.
Superman is old, but it's a classic!
So comic books are not new.
Superman is about 75 years old.
Superman and Batman are both very old, but very popular, too.
They are super.
Right. That's what Susie says, too.
She just means that they are great.
You can use the word "super" in that way, like:
You did a super job.
Or this food is super.
And those are super examples, Katie.
And Batman and Superman are so popular that many movies have been made about
them.
Like Ken says, the movies are based on comic books.
Let's talk about another key word now.
base.
base.
If a movie is based on a comic book, the movie comes from the comic book.
So when you use the word "base," you usually say "based on." This is based on
that.
And that's our Use It sentence today.
That movie is based on a true story.
Oh, that's a good one.
We hear that a lot.
And you know how some clothes look like animal skin?
Maybe we could say that the idea for the dress was based on an animal.
That "Use It!" sentence is a little hard, but why don't you try it too?
I know you can do it, friends.
Now, earlier Nathan said that Superman is about 75 years old.
That's because the first Superman comic book was printed in 1938, like Ken says.
And that's pretty cool.
Do you know why, Katie?
Well, I think it's cool because a lot of people still like Superman a lot.
It's a classic.
Now friends, a classic is something that was made a long time ago, but people
still watch it or read it, like movies or books.
And friends, that sentence has another key word in it.
That's right.
Let's look at this key word.
print.
print.
When something is printed, it is put on paper by a machine.
And when Superman was first printed, they used a big machine to make a lot of
comic books.
But now we can print from our computers, and what machine do we use to print?
Printers.
Printing is much easier now that we have those things.
Yes. For a long time, people could not print things for themselves.
But now we can print pictures and papers with machines at our own home.
Now let's see if Susie likes any comics in Conversation C.
Do you read any kind of comics, Susie?
I like to read cartoons in the newspaper.
Newspaper comics are good.
Sometimes they are funny.
But they can also be serious.
You're right.
Susie, do you have a favorite cartoon or comic strip?
Yes, I do.
Peanuts is my favorite comic strip.
It's funny and cute.
So Susie doesn't read comic books.
But she does like some comic strips.
She says, "I like to read the cartoons in the newspaper." And that's the last
key word for today.
cartoon.
cartoon.
The cartoons in the newspaper are comic strips.
But there are a few kinds of cartoons.
All kinds of cartoons are stories that are told with drawn or painted pictures.
Cartoons in newspapers only have a few pictures.
But movies that are drawn or painted are also called cartoons.
They use many pictures.
Newspaper cartoons and cartoon movies are very different, but we can call them
the same thing.
Now newspaper cartoons are usually for adults.
Many cartoon movies are for children.
They are also different in that way.
And that's why Susie has a favorite comic strip.
They are for adults.
Peanuts is her favorite, and it is also very popular.
Yes. It's also a classic.
And it's pretty old, too, but not as old as Batman or Superman.
Batman and Superman are exciting stories about superheroes.
But Peanuts is very different.
It is funny stories of a boy, his friends and his dog.
It's supposed to make you laugh.
Which kind of comic do you like more, friends?
Talk about that in English with a friend later.
Now it's time to review today's key words.
Here's the first one.
cover.
cover.
The cover of this book is colorful.
adult.
adult.
I am an adult. I am not a child.
base.
base.
Did he base the song on his own life?
print.
print.
This book was first printed in 1794.
cartoon.
cartoon.
Ken drew the cartoon.
OK, friends.
Try to remember all of today's key words.
But right now it's time for a break.
We'll see you again verysoon.
