Hello, friends, and welcome to the month of August.
My name is Katie, and I am one of your LTE teachers.
I hope you are enjoying summertime so far.
Right now it's time to review our lessons.
We finished the month of July this week.
And we learned a lot about libraries.
Do you think libraries are still important?
I do.
We also saw Susie a lot.
She had an accident.
But did she break her wrist?
Why don't we review our conversations and find out some of the answers to these
questions?
(Music).
Goodbye, Megan.
Are you going home?
No. I'm going to the library.
Which library?
I'm going to First Street library.
It's near my apartment.
So you can check out some books.
Yes, I might.
Or you can check out some audiobooks.
Not this time.
Well, what else can you do at the library?
I can talk to a librarian.
OK. Why?
Maybe I can read some books to children at story time.
You can be a volunteer!
That's a great idea!
Thanks!
Hey, can I go with you?
Sure.
What can you do at the library?
Well, first, I want a library card.
That's a good first step.
And I can read some magazines.
That's fun.
I can also use one of the library's computers.
That's true.
The library has many computers.
I can read some movie reviews online.
Are you going to a movie soon?
No. I can check out some DVDs from the library.
Good idea.
I know.
I love free movies!
(Background Noise).
Hi, Ken.
What are you reading?
The Best of Baseball.
Oh! That's a bestseller.
Did you just download it?
Yes, yesterday.
It's really interesting.
How much did it cost?
Nothing.
It was free!
What?
Where did you get that book for free?
From the library!
Oh. I always forget.
The library lends e-books now, too.
Don't you check out e-books?
No. How do I do it?
Well, first you need a library card.
Just like for paper books?
That's right.
So you can only check out e-books from a local library.
Yes. But you just go to the library's website and download a book.
You don't need to go to the library.
That's convenient.
Here's another nice thing about e-books.
You never pay late fees.
So you don't have to return e-books?
No. When a book is due, you won't be able to open it anymore.
Oh. So when is your book due?
In two weeks.
Can you finish it by then?
I can finish it tonight!
Wow. It must be a really good book!
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk.
Now there's a question that I've been asking myself.
It's a question about libraries.
Are libraries still important?
Well, to help us answer this question, I have a very special guest here.
Please help me welcome Ms. Lisa Librarian.
Welcome to the show, Lisa Librarian!
Thanks, Rob.
So, Lisa, are libraries still important in this digital age?
I think so!
And I'm not just saying that because I'm a librarian.
But many people read books online or with an e-reader.
Do we really need libraries?
We do.
Libraries provide communities with many useful services.
Such as letting people borrow books and DVDs for free?
That's right.
What else do libraries provide?
Libraries have computers and free Internet.
They usually also offer helpful classes and children's programs.
Those are valuable services.
They are.
Also, people just enjoy looking through the shelves and finding books.
I enjoy that.
And these days, many people want to borrow e-books, not buy them.
That's true.
So you know what this means, don't you, Rob?
Libraries are still important.
(Music).
We live in a digital age.
People go online to read, or they use e-readers.
So what does that mean for libraries?
Are they still important? Many people think so.
People still like to go to a library and look through books on the shelves.
Also, libraries provide useful services, such as free Internet, helpful classes
and children's programs.
These services are valuable to many people.
Ah! Oh! Oh...
Susie, are you OK?
No, I'm not, Ken.
I just had an accident.
What happened?
I fell down the stairs.
Oh, no!
I need to sit down.
Let me help you.
Oh! Ah! Oh...
Can I get you something?
Some pain medicine?
Yes. That would be good.
Do you need some water to take the medicine?
Yes.
Thanks, Ken.
Here is the medicine, and here is some water.
Thanks.
So what hurts?
My whole body!
Maybe you should see a doctor.
Oh, no.
I don't need to see a doctor.
But you're in a lot of pain.
I know, but I'll be fine.
The medicine will help me.
I'll feel better soon.
I hope so.
Ken, you were right.
About what?
I do need to see a doctor.
My wrist still really hurts.
Your wrist hurts?
Yes. I fell on it.
It hurts even when I just move it a little.
Maybe you broke it.
I might need an X-ray.
Can you drive me to the doctor?
Sure.
Let's go to the clinic on First Street.
Thanks, Ken.
Oh! Ah!
Hello, Carol.
Susie, I heard about your accident yesterday.
I'm sorry.
Me, too.
I shouldn't have tried to run down the stairs!
Susie, if you need to go home, please do.
You don't have to work today.
Thanks, Carol.
I might leave early.
My wrist still hurts.
And it will hurt for a while.
Did you break any bones?
No, but I sprained my wrist.
So Ken took you to the emergency room?
No, we didn't go to the ER.
We went to a clinic.
Did you need to make an appointment?
No, you can just walk in.
Then you wait for a doctor to see you.
I went to the ER once.
Why did you go to the ER?
I thought I was having a heart attack!
Were you really having a heart attack?
No. It was actually a panic attack.
But it felt like a heart attack!
I would have been scared.
I was!
But a nurse helped me and explained what was happening.
She was very calm.
A nurse?
Why not a doctor?
All the doctors were busy with real emergencies!
Welcome back, friends.
I hope you enjoyed reviewing our conversations.
I have a question for you all.
Are you ready?
Chris, are you ready?
Uh, Katie, I am Chris the Jungle Cafe bird.
I am always ready.
Let's answer some questions.
Thanks, Chris.
I knew I could count on you.
OK, friends, here is the first question.
What book is Ken reading?
Duh! Easy question, Katie.
He's reading a bestseller.
Well, yes, that's true, Chris.
But what is the name of the book?
It's called The Best of Baseball.
That's right.
Good job, Chris.
Thank you, thank you.
OK. Here's the next question.
What do libraries provide communities?
Oh, oh, good question, Katie.
That's harder.
Well, Chris, I know you can do it.
All right, all right.
Well, I know libraries provide Internet.
You're right.
What else?
Hmm. Well, if you use the Internet, you need a computer.
So they also provide computers!
Right, Chris.
That's amazing.
OK. What else do libraries provide?
There's... there's more, Katie?
What kind of question is this?
It's a hard question.
But you're smart.
I know you can do it.
OK, I can do it.
Uh, libraries also provide...
Oh! I remember!
Libraries also provide classes and programs for people.
You're right, Chris.
Good job!
Libraries provide a lot for people.
Yeah. That's why libraries are so important.
I agree.
OK. Last question.
What happened to Susie this week?
Oh, I remember.
Susie had an accident.
That's not good.
Mm, you're right.
That's not good.
But she will be OK.
Friends, let's take a short break.
We'll be rightback.
