Welcome, friends.
You are watching Let's Talk in English on LTE TV.
It's good to have you here.
My name is Nathan.
And I'm one of your teachers.
Now today we have a topic called AROUND TOWN.
And today's lesson is called Are Libraries Still Important?
We're going to continue talking about libraries.
Are Libraries Still Important?
Katie, do you think that libraries are still important?
Well, that's a very good question, Nathan.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And I... I do think that libraries are still important.
They have so many things for people, like books, movies and music.
You can go there when you need information about something.
That's right, libraries are great.
Now let's learn some more about them in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Now there's a question that I've been asking myself.
It's a question about libraries.
Are libraries still important?
Well, to help us answer this question, I have a very special guest here.
Please help me welcome Ms. Lisa Librarian.
Welcome to the show, Lisa Librarian!
Thanks, Rob.
So, Lisa, are libraries still important in this digital age?
I think so!
And I'm not just saying that because I'm a librarian.
But many people read books online or with an e-reader.
Do we really need libraries?
We do.
Libraries provide communities with many useful services.
Such as letting people borrow books and DVDs for free?
That's right.
Well, Lisa Librarian is on today's show with Rob.
Rob's first question for Lisa is: Are libraries still important in this digital
age?
That's an important question.
And Lisa says she thinks libraries are still important.
Why does she think that, Nathan?
Lisa says that libraries provide communities with useful services.
Now let's look at a key word there.
useful.
useful.
If something is useful, it is helpful.
You can use it.
It helps you do something.
That's right.
Libraries have useful services for people, like free Internet or classes you can
take.
They help people use the Internet or learn how to do something.
Then Rob says, "Such as letting people borrow books and DVDs for free." Now
there's another key word phrase in that sentence.
such as.
such as.
You use this phrase when you want to give an example of something.
That's right.
I can say I like many kinds of sports, such as tennis and soccer.
Or he goes to many kinds of places, such as restaurants and movie theaters.
So you can use the phrase "such as" instead of saying "for example".
OK, friends, now Lisa uses a "Use it!" sentence today.
I'm not just saying that because I'm a librarian.
That's the sentence.
So let's use it.
I'm not just reading this book because it's for school.
I want to read it.
I'm not just going to work because I have to go.
And I'm not just saying this because it's time for Conversation B.
But we do need to learn more there now.
What else do libraries provide?
Libraries have computers and free Internet.
They usually also offer helpful classes and children's programs.
Those are valuable services.
They are.
Also, people just enjoy looking through the shelves and finding books.
I enjoy that.
And these days, many people want to borrow e-books, not buy them.
That's true.
So you know what this means, don't you, Rob?
Libraries are still important.
We find out more things that libraries have for communities.
What does Lisa Librarian say, Nathan?
Well, she says that libraries have computers and free Internet.
They usually also have helpful classes and children's programs.
And Rob says those are valuable services.
Well, there's our next key word.
So let's take a look.
valuable.
valuable.
If something is valuable, it is helpful or important.
These services are valuable because they really help a lot of people out.
That's right.
Now let's use this word in another way.
I may say that speaking many languages is a valuable skill.
This means that it is really helpful to me that I can speak both Chinese and
English.
Thanks, Nathan. You're right.
Learning languages is valuable.
Well next, Lisa says people enjoy looking through the shelves.
And that's our next key word.
shelf.
shelf.
A shelf is something that you have on a wall that you can put things on.
And at the library there are many shelves.
And all the library's books are on the shelves.
But you can have shelves at home, too.
That's right.
I have bookshelves at home in my room.
And I also have shelves for my clothes and my pictures.
But don't forget. This is important.
One shelf is S-H-E-L-F, shelf.
Two shelves is S-H-E-L-V-E-S.
Shelf and shelves.
Now friends, Lisa asks one last question.
So you know what this means?
Now we need to learn about that key word.
mean.
mean.
If something means something else, then it is a result of that thing.
Now let's use a different example.
If I say that it is sunny outside today, that means it will be hot.
Because it is sunny, it will be hot.
Or studying a lot means you will get good grades.
Or not studying English means you won't speak it well.
OK, friends, we're almost out of time.
And you know what that means, don't you?
We need to go to today's Read It.
(Music).
We live in a digital age.
People go online to read, or they use e-readers.
So what does that mean for libraries?
Are they still important?
Many people think so.
People still like to go to a library and look through books on the shelves.
Also, libraries provide useful services, such as free Internet, helpful classes
and children's programs.
These services are valuable to many people.
Well, we see a great phrase at the beginning of today's Read It - digital age.
The phrase "digital age" is the time we are in now.
But why do we call it the digital age, Katie?
Well, we call it the digital age because we use the Internet and technology for
so many things.
We read our news online.
We use the Internet to find information.
We use our phones to stay in touch with people.
We read books on e-readers.
We don't use paper books or paper newspapers very often anymore.
So since this is the digital age, it's hard for libraries to stay open because
fewer people are going to the library.
But many people still think libraries are important.
And that's good.
Libraries still have valuable or useful and important services.
That's right.
I go to the library to use the Internet if I need to.
And you can take classes there.
Do you know many classes that libraries have, Nathan?
Hmm. Well, some libraries have classes you can go to and learn how to use a
computer.
Other classes teach you something fun, like sewing or making something.
That's true.
OK, friends, that is all the time that we have right now.
So we need to review today's key words.
And here is your first key word.
mean.
mean.
Better food means happier customers.
shelf.
shelf.
Put the medicine on a high shelf.
useful.
useful.
This website is very useful.
such as.
such as.
I love many fruits, such as watermelon.
valuable.
valuable.
Learning to sew is a valuable skill.
OK, friends.
Those are all of our key words for today.
Now we'll see you in just a few minutes.
But let's take abreak.
