Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at the LTE studios.
My name is Katie, one of your LTE teachers.
And we're happy that you joined us today.
Our topic is still AROUND TOWN.
And we have part two of our lesson, Let's Go to the Library.
Let's Go to the Library.
Nathan, what do you do at the library?
Well, I always like to look at the new books at the library when I go.
I can see what is new and interesting.
Hello, friends. My name is Nathan.
I hope you're ready to learn some more great words and phrases about the
library.
But right now look in your LTE magazine for our Let's Begin reading.
And Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Ken is reading a bestseller.
It didn't cost anything because he checked it out from the library.
The library lends e-books now.
Ken tells Rob about them.
Rob can go to his local library's website and download an e-book.
When it is due, he doesn't have to return it.
He just won't be able to open it anymore!
OK. So let's start today's lesson with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Ken. What are you reading?
The Best of Baseball.
Oh! That's a bestseller.
Did you just download it?
Yes, yesterday.
It's really interesting.
How much did it cost?
Nothing. It was free!
What? Where did you get that book for free?
From the library!
Oh. I always forget.
The library lends e-books now, too.
Ken is reading a book in Conversation A.
That is one of my favorite things to do.
And the book is called The Best of Baseball.
Nathan, what else does Rob say about this book?
He says it's a bestseller.
Now a bestseller is a book that has sold a lot.
It has sold the best.
A bestseller book is very popular because a lot of people have bought the book
or have read the book.
That's right.
And Rob asks, "Did you just download it?" That's interesting.
Why would Rob ask that?
Well, because Ken is reading an e-book, Katie.
You can download e-books.
You know that.
You have a e-reader, don't you?
Of course I know that.
I was just testing you, Nathan.
Well, Rob asks how much the book cost.
That's a key word.
cost.
cost.
If something costs an amount of money, you must pay that much to buy it.
Right.
If you want to buy a pen, I may say this pen costs $2.
I have to pay $2 for that pen.
But Ken says the e-book doesn't cost anything.
It was free.
Now if something is free, you don't have to pay any money to buy it.
Well, that's... that's weird.
I mean, how did Ken get that e-book for free?
Well, Ken says that he got it from the library.
And Rob says the library lends e-books now.
The word "lend" means they let people borrow things for a short time.
You have to give it back.
OK, friends, it's time for us to go to Conversation B right now.
(Music).
Don't you check out e-books?
No. How do I do it?
Well, first you need a library card.
Just like for paper books.
That's right.
So you can only check out e-books from a local library.
Yes. But you just go to the library's website and download a book.
You don't need to go to the library.
That's convenient.
Conversation B starts out with our "Use it!" sentence for today.
Don't you check out e-books?
Don't you do something?
Let's use it.
Don't you have a dog?
Don't you want to go to school today?
Don't you need to eat dinner?
Don't you like to sing songs?
Don't you want to learn more English?
I know you all want to learn more English.
Let's keep going.
We find out that you can only check out e-books from a local library.
And that is a key word today.
local.
local.
If something is local, it means it is in or near your town.
So in our conversation, Rob says you can only check out e-books from a local
library.
The local library is the library in their town.
Some towns also have local places to eat or local events.
These are things you go to in your town.
A lot of times I go to the local market.
This is the market that is close to me because it is in my town.
Now we find out that checking out books from the local library is convenient.
Why does Rob say this is convenient, Katie?
Well, because you don't have to go to the library to check out e-books.
You can just go to the website and download the book.
You don't have to leave your home.
Wow, that is convenient.
And friends, don't forget that convenient means easy.
That's right, Nathan.
OK friends, we should go to Conversation C right now.
(Music).
Here's another nice thing about e-books.
You never pay late fees.
So you don't have to return e-books?
No. When a book is due, you won't be able to open it anymore.
Oh. So when is your book due?
In two weeks.
Can you finish it by then?
I can finish it tonight!
Wow. It must be a really good book!
Well, I think e-books are convenient.
And we find out a few more things about them.
Right. You never have to pay late fees on e-books.
You don't have to return the e-books.
Well, we should look at that key word.
return.
return.
If you return something, you bring it back.
Right. And when you check out books from the library, you have to return them.
When the books are due, you have to bring them back to the library.
And don't forget, when you borrow things, you always have to bring them back to
the person you borrowed from.
But you don't have to do that for the library's e-books.
Now you can also return or go back to a place yourself.
We might say: I had to return to school because I forgot my books.
That's right, Nathan.
There are two ways to use that word.
Now Ken says when a book is due, you won't be able to use it anymore.
And there's another key word.
Let's look at it.
due.
due.
If something is due, it must be finished or returned by that time.
Now let's use this word.
A teacher may say to you: Your homework is due tomorrow.
Now what does that mean, Katie?
Well, that means that you must give your homework to your teacher tomorrow.
That's when she said it is due.
But let's try to look at another example.
Well, we were just talking about library books being due.
When library books are due, you have to return them to the library on the day
that the library says.
That's right. If the books are due back to the library in two weeks, I have to
return them in two weeks.
If I don't, I have to pay a late fee.
That's right, Katie.
Now friends, a late fee is something you pay to a library if you do not return
your books on time.
And also, fees can be due on a certain day also.
You have to pay things like bills, right, Katie?
That's right . At the end of the month, your bills are usually due.
And your rent for your apartment may also be due.
OK friends, let's look at our next key word.
able.
able.
If you are able to do something, you can do it or you know how to do it.
Now our conversation says when your e-books are due, you won't be able to open
them anymore.
You can't open them anymore.
You are not able to.
Let's try another example with this word.
I may say that I am able to speak English.
I can speak English.
Right. So if you are able to do something, you know how to do it.
You have learned how to do that thing.
Well friends, I know we're all able to review key words, right?
So let's do that right now.
Here's the first key word.
cost.
cost.
This swimsuit costs $20. I can buy it.
local.
local.
Food from a local farm is very fresh!
due.
due.
Our English homework is due tomorrow.
return.
return.
I borrowed a DVD. Now I'm returning it.
able.
able.
Are you able to read the sign?
Good job practicing.
Did you remember all of your key words?
We hope that you did.
Now we'll be right back in just aminute.
