Hi, friends. Welcome to Let's Talk in English here on LTE TV.
We are very glad to have you with us today.
My name is Nathan.
I am one of your teachers here on LTE TV.
Now today's topic is new.
And it is AROUND TOWN.
The title of our lesson is Let's Go to the Library.
Let's Go to the Library.
Katie, do you like to go to the library?
Oh, Nathan, of course I like to go to the library.
I love to read books.
And the library is the perfect place to read.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And I am your other LTE teacher.
We have a great lesson for today.
And we need to get ready for it.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Why is Megan going to the library?
She might check out some books or audiobooks.
She can also talk to a librarian.
Megan can read books to children at story time.
Mark can go with her.
He can read magazines.
He can read movie reviews online.
He can check out some DVDs.
OK, friends, let's go to Conversation A and learn some more.
(Music).
Goodbye, Megan.
Are you going home?
No. I'm going to the library.
Which library?
I'm going to First Street Library.
It's near my apartment.
So you can check out some books.
Yes, I might.
Or you can check out some audiobooks.
Not this time.
Well, what else can you do at the library?
In Conversation A, we see Megan and Mark together.
Mark asks Megan: Are you going home?
And Megan says no.
She is going to the library.
And that's our first key word today.
library.
library.
A library is a place that has a lot of books that people can borrow for a short
time.
They can take books out of the library.
But they have to bring them back.
Libraries have a lot of different books.
The library is great because you can take books home and read them for free.
You do not have to buy them.
Nathan, do you go to the library a lot.
Well, when I was in college, I went to the library a lot.
But now I have a lot of my own books that I'm reading.
So I don't.
Well, Megan says she is going to the First Street Library.
It's near her apartment.
And Mark says that Megan can check out some books.
You know, the phrase "check out" sounds like something we should learn about.
We should because actually it's a key word, too.
check out.
check out.
If you check something out from somewhere, you borrow it for a short time.
At a library you can check out books.
But like we said earlier, you have to bring them back.
And you can check out other things from libraries, too.
Many times, libraries will also have music or movies that you can check out.
Most libraries only let you check out items for a few weeks at a time.
After that, you have to return your items so other people can check them out.
And Mark also says Megan can check out audiobooks.
Let's learn about that word.
An audiobook is a book that you can listen to on a CD.
An audiobook is good to listen to if you are driving a car because you can enjoy
the story without reading it.
You just have to listen to the words in the book.
And Mark asks Megan, "What else can you do at the library?" Well, I guess if we
want to find out more, we have to go to Conversation B.
(Music).
I can talk to a librarian.
OK. Why?
Maybe I can read some books to children at story time.
You can be a volunteer!
That's a great idea!
Thanks!
Hey, can I go with you?
Sure. What can you do at the library?
Well, first, I want a library card.
That's a good first step.
Well, Megan answers Mark's question: What else can you do at the library?
She says she can talk to a librarian.
Nathan, do you want to tell our friends what a librarian is?
Oh. Sure, Katie.
A librarian is a person who works at a library.
Librarians usually are in charge of putting books back on the shelves and
checking books out for people.
Thank you, Nathan. You're right.
Now a librarian works at a library.
Megan wants to talk to the librarian.
She says maybe she can read some books to children at story time.
Katie, I think you said a key word.
And I think we need to tell our friends about it.
You're right.
Let's look at our key word.
child.
child.
A child is a boy or a girl who is very young.
If you are below the age of 12 or 13, you are usually called a child.
So I am not a child because I am older than 18.
And friends, look at this.
One child is spelled C-H-I-L-D.
But two or more children is spelled C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N.
One child. Two children.
Thank you, Nathan.
That is good to remember.
And Mark says our "Use it!" sentence for today.
You can be a volunteer.
You can be something.
Of course you can be many different things.
You can be a doctor.
Or you can be a teacher.
You can be anything that you want to be.
Now Mark says he wants to get a library card.
If you want to check out books at the library, you have to have a library card.
You can't check out books if you don't have one.
Yes, remember that if you are going to the library.
Well friends, that's all the time we have for Conversation B.
We're going to go now to Conversation C.
(Music).
And I can read some magazines.
That's fun.
I can also use one of the library's computers.
That's true.
The library has many computers.
I can read some movie reviews online.
Are you going to a movie soon?
No. I can check out some DVDs from the library.
Good idea.
I know. I love free movies!
We find out some other things you can do at the library.
Mark says he can read some magazines.
That is another key word to talk about.
magazine.
magazine.
A magazine is a thin book with a big cover.
It has a lot of pictures and articles inside of it.
Let's Talk in English is a magazine.
You use it.
A new one comes out every month.
But there are a lot of different kinds of magazines.
You can read a magazine about almost anything that you are interested in.
That's right.
There are magazines about cooking, about animals and about many things.
I have a friend who lets me borrow his movie magazines.
Do you like reading any kind of magazine, Katie?
Well, I really like to read travel magazines.
Now these magazines are helpful because they tell me where I can go and what
places I need to see.
So you can get magazines at a library.
But what else can you do there, Katie?
Well, Conversation C says that you can also use the library's computers.
That's right.
Using the library's computers, you can look up anything online.
And I think Mark likes to look online for movie reviews.
But I think "online" is a key word that we need to look at.
online.
online.
If something is online, it means it is on the Internet.
You can... do so many things online.
That's right.
Mark can read movie reviews online.
He can read about movies.
Or you can read the news online.
Or you can look at pictures online.
Now let's look at the phrase "movie reviews." We may have talked about it
before.
But don't forget that a movie review is something you read to find out a
person's opinion - what they though - about a movie.
A review that a movie has will tell you the good things and the bad things about
the movie.
That's right.
And we often read movie reviews when we want to know more about a movie we are
thinking about going to see.
That's why Megan asks Mark if he's going to a movie.
But he's not.
He can check out DVDs from the library.
That's a good idea.
Sometimes I read movie reviews to see if a movie is worth watching.
Well, sometimes I read book reviews online.
Just like a movie review, this can tell you about a book and let you know if it
is good.
But friends, I think we're out of time.
So let's review our key words right now.
And here's the first key word.
library.
library.
We can borrow books from the library.
check out.
check out.
How many books can I check out?
child.
child.
The child is playing at the park.
magazine.
magazine.
Which magazine are you reading?
online.
online.
I'm reading the news online.
That is all of our key words today, friends.
Good job practicing them.
Why don't you go online and check out what is on our website there.
Right now we have a break.
So you can do that right now.
