Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for joining us here today.
My name is Katie, one of your LTE teachers.
And I hope that you're ready to learn with us today.
Our topic is still ENTERTAINMENT.
And we have a new lesson, A Famous Actor.
A Famous Actor.
Nathan, do you know any famous actors?
Oh. Uh, let me think about that.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
And I am the other teacher hear on LTE TV.
It's good to be with you.
But I don't think that I know any famous actors.
It would be fun to meet them.
Maybe I will someday.
Well friends, I think that this will be an interesting lesson.
So let's get started and go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
So who is your favorite actor or actress?
Well, today we are going to talk to one of my favorite actors.
Please help me welcome Mr. Andy Actor!
Welcome to our show, Andy.
Thank you, Rob.
You're a famous actor.
You won another award last week.
Congratulations!
Thank you.
You play such good characters.
Which one was your favorite?
I enjoyed playing all of them.
But Ted Texas was my favorite.
I liked him, too.
Ted Texas was a real hero.
I love playing heroes!
Well, Rob has a famous actor on his show today.
His name is Andy Actor.
Have you seen any of his movies?
Well, I've seen a lot of movies, Katie.
But I haven't seen Andy Actor before.
I guess I should watch some of his movies.
He just won another award.
And Rob says he plays such good characters.
Nathan, you just used all three of the key words.
We should talk about them one at a time.
The first key word is...
play.
play.
This isn't about playing games or sports, right, Nathan?
No. "Play" means to be someone else in a movie or maybe a TV show.
An actor could play a policeman, a singer, a farmer, lots of other things, too.
Nathan, I know that you have been in some shows.
What have you played?
Hmm. Well, I've played a thief, uh, a king and a cat.
You played a cat? Really?
Well, yes, I did play a cat.
It was such a fun part to play.
Friends, we often say that we play a part when we are being someone else.
And you used our second key word again.
Let's take a look.
such.
such.
You can use this word to make the next word stronger like "very" or "so."
Nathan, this is such a hard word to talk about.
Well, but we have such smart students, Katie.
I know they'll understand this word.
Don't you, friends?
Now Katie said "such a hard word" because she was talking about one word.
I said "such smart students" because there are many of you.
And Rob says "such good characters" because Andy has played many characters.
Now let's talk about the last key word in that phrase.
character.
character.
A character is a person on TV or in a movie, book or play.
And many characters are not real people, like Ted Texas.
But characters can be real people.
I think Andy Actor has probably played a character from history before.
Katie, do you have a favorite character?
Yes. My favorite character is Robin Williams in the movie Dead Poets Society.
He plays the part of a professor at a school.
He is a great character.
Nathan, what about you?
Who is your favorite character?
Well, I like movies with cowboys in them.
And there's a famous cowboy called John Wayne, one of my favorite characters.
How about you, friends?
Is there a character that you really like?
Well, let's learn more about Andy's job in Conversation B.
(Music).
I'm sure you need to memorize a lot of lines.
Yes. There are some days when I have to memorize hundreds of lines!
That's not easy.
Do you ever get nervous when you act?
Sometimes. But I still have fun.
You must have a lot of fans, right?
I do. They are the best!
They send me letters, pictures and gifts.
Wow, I want fans!
I would love to be an actor.
But the job can be difficult.
Rob thinks that Andy needs to memorize a lot of lines.
And that's a difficult key word.
memorize.
memorize.
If you have to memorize something, you have to remember it just like it is.
Have you ever given a speech?
Sometimes you have to memorize every word so that you can say it just like it
was written.
It's not easy.
In the United States, students have to memorize the 50 states and where they are
on the map.
Sometimes Andy Actor has to memorize hundreds of lines.
He just means that he has to memorize a lot.
Sometimes we say "hundreds of something" or even "thousands of something" to
mean that there were a lot of them.
That's right, like: I saw hundreds of birds.
Or, there were thousands of people at the concert.
Later, Rob asks Andy if he gets nervous when he acts because he has so many
lines.
And that is our last key word to look at today.
act.
act.
You see this word "actor," and it means to play a character.
So if you act, you are being someone else.
People act in movies and plays or on TV.
Friends, do you like acting?
Some people really like acting, like me.
But some people don't like it, or they get nervous if they need to act.
Now let's review what we've learned today in a fun Read It.
I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Rob is interviewing a famous actor named Andy Actor.
He has won several awards, and even won another one last week.
He has played many characters, and they were all really good.
Andy's favorite character was Ted Texas because he was such a hero.
Sometimes Andy gets nervous when he acts.
He needs to memorize a lot of lines.
But he still has fun.
And he has the best fans.
They send him letters, pictures and gifts.
Did you remember all of those things about Andy Actor?
He has won several awards and even won another one last week.
Why is the word "even" used here, Nathan?
Well, we can use "even" to show that you are surprised or that something is
amazing.
Andy Actor has won several awards already.
But he won again!
That's amazing.
Right. Or I could say my dog is very smart.
He can even open and close doors by himself.
Not many dogs do that.
But we also read that Andy gets nervous when he acts sometimes.
Usually if you get something, that means someone gave it to you.
But how do you get nervous, Katie?
Well, in this sentence, "get nervous" just means to start feeling nervous.
Here's another example.
I'm getting excited for my vacation to Europe.
And you know what, Katie?
I'm getting ready to review today's key words.
Why don't we do that now.
Here's the first key word.
play.
play.
Luke played the king.
character.
character.
How many characters are in the book?
such.
such.
Katie is such a nice girl!
act.
act.
Ruby likes to act. She dances, too.
memorize.
memorize.
You should memorize your phone number.
OK, friends, that was some great key word practice.
Maybe you should try to memorize them and use them when you talk to your
friends.
Don't go away.
We're going to take a shortbreak.
