Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
It's a great day here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie - one of your LTE teachers.
And we're happy that you joined us today.
Today's topic is ENTERTAINMENT.
And the title of today's lesson is: What's Your Favorite Show?
What's Your Favorite Show?
Do you watch many shows, Nathan?
Well, I watch one or two TV shows.
And it's fun to watch TV shows.
But don't watch too many.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
And I am very glad to be teaching you and learning with you together today on
LTE TV.
But now it's time to open your LTE magazine and find our Let's Begin reading for
today.
You can read it with Katie right now.
Let's begin!
Megan's favorite show is Fran's Life.
It is a comedy.
Ken likes comedies, too.
He also likes dramas.
They sometimes have a lot of action.
Megan is not a fan of reality TV.
People fight a lot on those shows.
Ken doesn't like cooking shows.
Megan and Ken like travel shows.
Luke Jones is the host of one travel show.
Well, let's start our lesson with Ken and Megan in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Megan. You're happy this morning.
Hi, Ken. I am!
I just watched my favorite TV show.
What is your favorite TV show?
Fran's Life.
Oh. What kind of show is it?
A comedy? A drama?
It's a comedy.
The show is 30 minutes.
Comedies are great!
I love funny shows.
Well, Ken sees that Megan is very happy this morning.
It's because she just watched her favorite TV show.
Sometimes that makes me happy, too.
What about you, Nathan?
Well, it might make me happy.
But sometimes it makes me nervous.
I want to know what will happen next.
That's true.
Now Ken asks Megan, "What is your favorite TV show?" That question is like our
lesson title - What's Your Favorite TV Show?
But how are they different, Nathan?
Well, of course one just says "show" and not "TV show".
But also, Ken asks "What is," and our lesson title says "What's." That's a
little different.
This is good for you to know, friends.
You can say "what's" instead of "what is," like: What's your phone number?
Or what's the problem?
We often say "what's" because it's shorter.
So what's Megan's favorite show, Katie?
It's a comedy called Fran's Life.
And that's a key word.
Let's look at it.
comedy.
comedy.
A comedy is a show, movie or play that is funny.
Do you like comedies, Nathan?
Uh, sure. But I like to watch dramas more.
But comedies make people laugh.
Don't you like to laugh?
Of course I like to laugh.
But I'm not the only one who likes dramas.
You'll see in Conversation B.
(Music).
What other kinds of shows do you watch?
I like dramas.
The stories are interesting.
And exciting!
Yes. Sometimes there is a lot of action!
The actors are usually really good, too.
Do you ever watch reality TV shows?
No. People fight a lot on reality TV shows.
I agree. I don't enjoy that.
See, Katie? Ken also likes dramas.
He says they are interesting.
And Megan says they are exciting.
Well, I agree with them.
But comedies are really good, too.
But I guess there is more action in drama shows.
Yes. Some dramas have action.
Action is great.
And it's a key word today.
action.
action.
Action is a kind of show or movie that has many things happening quickly.
So it's exciting to watch.
Comedies can have action, too.
But action is probably more common in a drama movie.
Action movies are fun to watch.
Police are trying to catch the thief in a car chase.
Or the good guy is fighting the bad guy, and you want him to win.
You're right, Katie.
But you just used a key word that we need to talk about.
flight.
flight.
If people fight, they are trying to hurt each other.
We might like to watch people fight on TV or in a movie.
I don't like to see real people fight because it's dangerous.
Yeah, me, too.
If a hero is fighting in a movie to do something good, well, that's not bad.
But we should try not to fight.
It usually doesn't help solve our problems.
Some people fight with their hands or with guns and knives.
But more people fight with their words.
And that's what Megan means when she says that people fight on reality TV.
They usually say bad things to each other.
Now reality TV are shows where real people are doing things together.
What kind of things might they be doing on a reality TV show, Katie?
Well, a lot of times they are just living their lives.
Maybe they're living somewhere interesting, and people want to film it.
That's one kind of reality show.
That's right.
So reality TV is supposed to be about real life and real people.
But sometimes I don't think it's that real.
Well, we should also talk, friends, about the word "fight" as a noun.
People can have a fight, right, Katie?
That's right.
You can have a fight with your friend or maybe your brother or sister.
And that is called having a fight.
Now when Ken asks Megan, "Do you ever watch reality TV shows?" She says, "No."
People fight on reality TV shows.
And she doesn't like it.
But that question is a "Use it!" sentence.
So let's use it.
Do you ever do something?
Like: Do you ever read books?
Or do you ever play basketball?
Do you ever travel?
Nathan, do you ever go to Conversation C?
Well actually, I go to Conversation C almost every day.
And I think maybe it's a good time to go to Conversation C right now.
What about travel shows?
I like travel shows.
They show you so many different places!
My favorite travel show is Travel the World.
Luke Jones is the host.
He's very good.
Do you like cooking shows?
No. I'm not a fan.
Why not?
I can't eat the food!
I can only see it!
Ken and Megan have talked about comedies, dramas and reality shows.
But they still have more shows to talk about, like travel shows.
In travel shows, you can see many different countries and learn about their
culture.
Now you know that "travel" can be a verb.
I had to travel over the mountain to get here.
But "travel" can also be a noun, like: Travel is one of my favorite things to
talk about.
Or, my dad knows a lot about travel.
And we can learn about travel by watching some travel shows, like Travel the
World.
Luke Jones is the host of Travel the World.
And that's a key word for this show.
Let's look at it.
host.
host.
A host is a person that leads or take cares of... takes care of guests, usually
on TV.
And on a travel show, you will watch the host go to different places, do
interesting things and maybe try some new foods.
Travel show hosts tell their guests, which are the people watching their TV
show, about these things.
And you all know a host, too.
Rob. He is the host on his talk show.
He talks to his guests on the show.
And Nathan, I know another... some more hosts, too.
You know other hosts?
Yeah. You and I are hosts of Let's Talk in English.
Yes, I guess you could call us hosts of this TV show, too.
That's true.
And friends, if you have guests at your home, you are also their host.
You might need to give them some things that they need or cook for them.
And "host" can also be a verb.
You host someone at your house.
Right, Katie?
That's right.
If you have family who comes to visit, you are their host, and you are hosting
them.
You help them while they are visiting you.
And cooking shows have hosts, too.
But we find out that Ken is not a fan of cooking shows.
Let's see what this means by looking at this next key word.
fan.
fan.
If you are a fan of something, then you really like it.
For example, you can say: I'm a soccer fan.
Do you like soccer, Katie?
Actually, I am not a fan of soccer.
But I am a tennis fan.
I like tennis a lot more.
So I am a fan of tennis.
If someone asks you if you like something, you can say "I'm a fan," or "I'm not
a fan." Now I have one for you, Nathan.
Are you a fan of key words?
Am I a fan of key words?
Well, I am a big fan of key words.
So let's review them together right now.
Here's your first key word.
comedy.
comedy.
The movie is a comedy. It is funny.
action.
action.
The movie had a lot of action.
fan.
fan.
I'm a fan of the NBA. I love it!
fight.
fight.
Daniel fights with his brother a lot.
host.
host.
Rob is the host of Let's Talk!
All right, friends, that was some great key word practice.
Try to say them on your own.
We are going to take a short break right now.
So don't goaway.
