Hello, there.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
You're watching LTE TV.
And we are glad to have you here with us today.
My name is Nathan.
It is very nice to see you today.
I am glad to be your teacher.
Today's topic is again PEOPLE.
And the title of our lesson is Let's Talk in... Oh, stop.
Let's Talk About People.
Let's Talk About People.
Katie, let's talk about you.
Are you a quiet or a loud person?
Well, I think that I am a quiet person.
When I'm around a lot of people, I usually don't talk a lot.
I like to listen.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And we have a great lesson for you today.
We're going to talk more about PEOPLE.
But before we can do that, you need to read Let's Begin.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Mark was calm and confident on the news program this morning.
But he gets tired of bad news, so he shared a humorous story.
A man in New Zealand lost some money.
A parrot stole it from his car!
Maybe he was careless with his money.
But the story was funny!
Well, this sounds like it will be a fun lesson.
So let's go to Conversation A.
(Music).
Nice job on the news this morning, Mark.
Yes. You looked calm and sounded confident.
Thanks. But I felt nervous!
It didn't show.
You read some interesting stories, too.
They were interesting.
But there wasn't much good news.
Sometimes I get tired of bad news.
Our audience gets tired of bad news, too!
So I try to find some good stories.
It looks like Mark is doing well at the station.
Isn't that right, Katie?
You're right, Nathan.
Carol tells Mark that he looked calm and sounded confident.
Those are some great words.
Yes, they are.
Look... Let's look at the first one.
It's a key word.
calm.
calm.
If you are calm, you are peaceful and quiet.
You are not worried.
It's important to stay calm when you report the news so that people can listen.
And Mark is good at that.
A lot of times you may tell someone to calm down if they are getting too
excited.
It's good to be calm, especially when you are at work.
If you are nervous, you can do things to calm yourself down and relax.
Before I go on TV, I take deep breaths.
That helps me calm down and feel better.
That's great advice, Katie.
Now let's learn about the next key word.
confident.
confident.
If you are confident, you have confidence in yourself.
That means you believe in yourself.
When you are confident, you believe that you can do anything.
This can help you at your job or at school.
Carol says that Mark sounds confident.
She means that he sounds strong and believable on the show.
Mark says that he sometimes gets tired of bad news.
Now Nathan, what does the phrase "tired of" mean?
Well, that just means you don't like something anymore.
I may like a song and listen to it a lot.
But if I listen to it too much, I don't like it anymore.
I am tired of it.
That's right.
And Mark is tired of bad news.
I think everyone is these days.
But we do have some good news right now.
We do. It's time to go to Conversation B.
(Music).
You shared a humorous one this morning.
Yes. I liked it.
Which story?
The one about the parrot.
He stole $1,000 from a man in New Zealand.
Really? How?
The man stopped to take some pictures.
The bird flew in his car window and flew out with the money.
What does a parrot do with $1,000?
Who knows?
We see a key word right away in Conversation B.
So let's learn something about it.
humorous.
humorous.
If something is humorous, it is funny.
It makes you laugh.
This is a great word.
Humorous things are fun.
Jokes are humorous.
And Mark shared a humorous story on the news.
Now when you share something with someone, like a story, you tell them about the
story.
Or you can share pictures with people.
You show them your pictures.
So what story did Mark share, Katie?
Well, it was a story about a parrot.
And that's the next key word.
parrot.
parrot.
A parrot is a kind of bird.
We have a parrot around here.
Who knows who Chris is, the bird in the Jungle Cafe?
Well Katie, who doesn't know Chris?
Oh, you're right, everyone knows Chris.
Well, Chris is a parrot.
He is a colorful bird.
And sometimes parrots can really talk.
They are interesting birds.
Chris is really good at talking.
And we find out some interesting things about this parrot.
He stole $1,000 from a man in New Zealand.
Well, let's learn about this next key word.
steal.
steal.
If you steal something, you take something from someone else that is not yours.
And it is not nice to steal.
You can get into a lot of trouble if you steal, friends.
So don't even try it.
Let's look at the past tense of this word "steal." The past tense is "stole,"
S-T-O-L-E.
That is important to remember.
That's a good point, Nathan.
The past tense of "steal" is "stole." And we learn in our conversation that the
parrot stole $1,000.
The bird flew in the man's car and then flew out with the money.
That is funny. It's humorous.
Now I wonder why the bird wanted the money.
Well, like Mark says, who knows?
Now friends, we say the phrase "Who knows?" if you are asked a question that you
think no one really knows the answer to.
If it is a very hard question, you may say "Who knows?" You're saying who knows
that answer.
I know I don't know that answer.
But I do know that we'll find out more about the parrot in Conversation C.
So maybe we should go there now.
(Music).
What did the man do?
He had generous friends.
They gave him money so he could finish his trip.
That's nice.
But he was careless with his money.
Maybe. But it's a funny story!
Yes. People need to laugh at some stories.
They hear enough bad news.
True. But the parrot story was bad news for one person!
Yes. The man who lost his money!
We find out the man who lost his money had generous friends.
Now what does generous mean, Katie?
Well, generous means that you give a lot to other people.
If you are generous with money, you help people, and you give them money when
they need it.
If you're generous with your time, you give people a lot of your time.
Good answer.
Well, Carol says this man was careless with his money.
Let's look at that key word.
careless.
careless.
If someone is careless, that means they don't give a lot of attention or care to
something.
The man was careless with his money.
He did not watch his money.
And the bird took it.
I could say that some people are careless when they do their homework.
They do not try very hard.
Or their homework may be messy.
That's another way to be careless.
Later, Carol says the parrot story was bad news for one person.
And Ken says: The man who lost his money!
In this phrase, everything after the word "who" describes the man.
Let's try another example.
Thomas was the boy who came to work late.
Everything after the word "who" describes Thomas.
Today's "Use it!" sentence is:
They gave him money so he could finish his trip.
Let's try to use it.
They taught him how to play basketball so he could join the team.
Good sentence, Nathan.
Here's another one.
They took her shopping for a dress so she could go to the wedding.
OK, now let's review today's key words together.
Here is your first key word.
calm.
calm.
Al is very calm. Nothing bothers him.
confident.
confident.
Jon will pass his test. He is confident.
humorous.
humorous.
Everyone laughed at the humorous story.
parrot.
parrot.
A parrot is a pretty bird.
steal.
steal.
Jake is sad. Someone stole his bike.
careless.
careless.
Allie was careless and broke a dish.
Very good job, friends.
Now it's time for a shortbreak.
