Hello, friends.
Welcome to LTE TV.
This is Let's Talk in English.
And we hope that you enjoy today's show.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers here on the show.
Today we have a new topic.
It is ACTIVITIES.
And our lesson is called Let's Swim!
Sounds like a good idea.
Let's Swim!
Katie, do you enjoy swimming?
Actually Nathan, I love to go swimming, especially during the summer when it is
so hot outside.
Swimming is a great way to keep cool.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And I am very excited to be here today.
We have a lot to learn.
So let's get ready for today's lesson.
Take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
The weather is hot again today!
There isn't a cloud in the sky.
How can our friends keep cool?
They can have a pool party!
Mark's apartment building has a pool with a diving board.
He invited everyone.
They can swim after work.
They need towels.
His pool isn't very large.
But they can have fun.
This sounds like it will be a fun lesson.
So let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
The air conditioner is working today!
I know! I'm so glad!
Yesterday was not fun.
The office was really hot!
Yes, it was.
The weather was so hot yesterday.
The weather is still really hot today, too.
There isn't a cloud in the sky.
So let's swim after work!
We can keep cool in the pool.
You know, Conversation A reminds me of our last lesson.
What was it called, Katie?
Oh, it was called Heat Wave because it was so hot around the LTE TV studio.
That's why Ken is really glad that the air conditioner, or AC, is working.
And so is Susie.
She says, "I'm so glad." In that sentence, "so" is used a lot like "very." Susie
is very glad.
We use the word "so" in that way a lot.
Like: This tea is so good.
Or, this food is so spicy.
Or you might tell a kid: You're so big now.
Actually, Ken says that the office was really hot yesterday.
And Susie says the weather was so hot yesterday.
So hot.
And Ken thinks that today is still really hot.
There isn't a cloud in the sky.
That's the same as saying there are no clouds in the sky.
There's our first key word of the day.
cloud.
cloud.
Clouds are the white or gray shapes that you see in the sky.
Do you know what clothes are made of, Katie?
Sure. Clouds are made of little drops of water or ice.
Big white clouds in a blue sky are really beautiful.
I agree.
But dark clouds aren't good.
I often think it will rain when I see dark clouds.
But if there are no clouds in the sky, it's probably a good day for swimming.
But where can they swim?
Let's find out in Conversation B.
(Music).
Where can we swim? Union Park?
No. The pool at Union Park is too crowded.
There are a lot of kids there.
True. Then where?
Mark's apartment building has a pool.
We can swim there.
Mark's building has a pool?
Yes! His building is new.
Did Mark invite you to his pool today?
Yes. We can all go!
Well, Mark has a pool. That's great!
But Ken didn't know that.
He thinks they can swim at Union Park.
But Susie says the pool at Union Park is too crowded.
This is today's "Use it!" sentence.
Something is too crowded.
That restaurant is too crowded.
Let's go somewhere else for lunch.
The classrooms are crowded because we have too many students.
You try to use today's "Use it!" sentence.
Now Susie says that Mark's apartment building has a pool.
Does your apartment building have a pool, Nathan?
No. That would be really nice.
But many apartment buildings do not have pools.
Newer buildings like Mark's sometimes have them.
That's right.
And now Ken asks Susie, "Did Mark invite you to his pool today?" We need to talk
about a key word in that question.
invite.
invite.
"Invite" means to ask someone to go somewhere with you.
Ken is asking if Mark asked Susie to come to his pool today.
You have probably been invited to a friend's house for dinner before.
If a friend is getting married, they will probably invite you to their wedding.
Susie was invited to Mark's pool.
But she says everyone can go.
OK, let's go on to Conversation C right now.
(Music).
How nice! We can have a pool party!
Yes! Don't forget your towel!
And my beach ball!
Hey, does Mark's pool have a diving board?
I think so.
Does the pool have a slide?
Maybe not. The pool isn't very large.
Oh. But can I invite a few other friends?
I don't know. Ask Mark!
Ken has a great idea.
He says...
Sorry?
Don't worry. I'll use this later.
He says, "We can have a pool party." Those are always fun.
But let's look at an important key word.
party.
party.
A party is a time when many people plan to have fun together.
Parties usually happen at someone's house.
But they can be other places, too.
That's right, you can have a party at a pool, a restaurant, or even at the
office.
Do you like parties, Nathan?
Well, I think parties can be fun.
But I don't really like big crowds.
So I don't always like to go to big parties.
How about you, Katie?
Nathan, I am like you.
I don't like big crowds, so I don't always like to go to parties.
Now friends, you might need to bring food or drinks to many parties.
But Susie tells Ken not to forget his towel.
Yes, he will need a towel for the pool party.
And that's a key word.
towel.
towel.
You can use a towel to dry yourself when you are wet, like after a shower.
In our kitchens or bathrooms, we may have smaller towels.
You use those for drying your hands or your dishes.
Um... Nathan, what are you doing?
Well, I... I just wanted to show them what they could do with a towel.
You can wear one like this.
Oh, uh, Katie, I thought that you could put this on your head like uh, you know,
when girls are drying their hair.
Uh, no, thank you, Nathan.
I think they understand what a towel is.
OK, Ken asks if Mark's pool has a diving board.
Nathan, the pool doesn't really belong to Mark, does it?
Well, no. Mark doesn't own the pool.
But he can use it anytime.
I might call the apartment building that Katie lives in "Katie's building," even
though she doesn't own the whole building.
So Susie thinks there's a diving board at Mark's pool, but not a slide.
The pool isn't very large, so there may not be room for a slide.
Now let's talk about one more key word today.
large.
large.
"Large" is another word for big.
Usually only large pools have slides.
When I hear the word "large," I think of sizes.
At a restaurant, you might buy a large drink.
Or you might buy a large shirt at a store.
Some apartment buildings are very large.
Some have over 20 floors.
That is a large building.
I know that there are a lot of large buildings in big cities.
They're pretty to look at.
But now it's time to review today's key words.
So let's do that now.
Here's the first key word.
cloud.
cloud.
Look at the white clouds in the sky.
party.
party.
The party is for Hannah's birthday.
invite.
invite.
Please invite your friend to dinner.
towel.
towel.
There are towels in the bathroom.
large.
large.
I want a large pizza. I'm hungry.
Well, in case you all are hungry, too, we are finished reviewing key words.
And now we can take a break.
But please come back.
We have a little more todo.
