It's a new day here at LTE TV.
Thank you for joining us here at Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
And I hope that you're ready to learn a lot more today.
Today our topic is still WEATHER.
And we have part two of our lesson, Heat Wave!
Heat Wave!
Those are not fun.
Nathan, have you ever been in a heat wave?
Yes. I remember some summers here where it was very hot for a long time.
They are... really are not fun.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
And I'm going to be teaching you today.
We have probably met before.
Now right now we need to read from our magazine, Let's Begin.
You can find it in your LTE magazine if you have it there.
And Katie will read it with you now.
Let's begin!
Mark is from Texas.
Summer is a really hot season there!
How do people keep cool in Texas?
Some use the AC.
But the bills are expensive.
A tall glass of iced tea is a perfect way to beat the heat.
Is there a swimming pool around?
Swimming is a very popular thing to do!
Well, the heat wave is still going on.
Let's see how our friends are doing in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Mark! It's really hot today!
Yeah. It reminds me of home!
That's right! You're from Texas!
It's really hot there!
True. Summer is a very hot season in Texas.
Is it as hot as this?
Usually! But it's a little too hot in here.
The air conditioner is still broken!
The repairman can't come until this afternoon.
Too bad.
Well, we know Mark is from Texas.
So he knows what hot weather is like.
Well Katie, you're from Texas, too.
Does hot weather remind you of home?
Yes, it does.
When it's hot outside, I think of all the summers I spent in Texas... too hot!
Well friends, that was our "Use it!" sentence.
If something reminds you of something else, it makes you think of it.
Hot weather reminds me of home.
It makes me think of home.
Can you use it?
I can.
Some songs remind me of when I was a kid.
And other songs remind me of when I was in college.
And like Mark says, summer is a very hot season in Texas.
Let's look at that key word.
season.
season.
A season is one of four parts of the year.
There are four seasons in a year.
I'm sure that you know some of them, friends.
I do. There's fall, winter, spring and um...
Uh, summer.
Right now it's the fourth season.
The weather is different in the different seasons.
In summer, it's usually really, really hot in most places.
It depends where you live.
Fall is my favorite season.
In the fall, it is still warm outside, but it hasn't gotten cold yet.
Winter is another season.
And it is cold in winter.
Sometimes it even snows.
You know, I love winter, too.
It's a great season.
I love the snow.
And Nathan, what's the last season we need to talk about?
Oh, spring.
Spring is after winter.
And it is when everything starts to grow again.
Flowers bloom, the sun comes out, and it gets warmer.
Do you have a favorite season, Nathan?
Well, it's really hard to choose, actually.
I like spring a lot.
But uh, I think we should go to Conversation B.
We have a lot more to learn about hot weather in Texas.
(Music).
How do you keep cool in Texas?
There are lots of ways to stay cool!
Like what?
Well, AC bills aren't cheap!
I use a fan when I can!
You can drink something cold, too!
Right! A tall glass of iced tea tastes great on a hot day!
You can also wear cool clothes, like shorts!
Susie starts with a question in Conversation B.
How do you keep cool in Texas?
That's a great question.
But before we answer it, we need to look at that key word first.
Oh, you're right, Katie.
Let's look at it.
The key word is...
keep.
keep.
Susie uses the phrase "keep cool." If we say we keep something, we stay like
that.
When she says "keep cool," she means stay cool.
She won't get hot.
But you can use this phrase a lot of other ways, too.
I may say I like to keep busy.
I like to stay busy.
I like to do a lot of things during the week.
Or you might say to young kids, "Keep quiet!" That means to stay quiet.
Well, Mark tells us there are a lot of ways to stay cool.
And that's another key word.
Thanks again, Katie.
We should look at that key word.
way.
way.
A way of doing something is doing something so that you get the result you want.
Mark says there are a lot of ways to stay cool.
He means there are a lot of different things you can do to stay cool.
You can go swimming.
You can turn on the air conditioning.
You could take a cold shower.
You could turn on a fan.
Those are different ways to stay cool.
That's right. And it's a good thing that there are a lot of ways to stay cool.
Why do you say that, Nathan?
Well, like Mark says, AC bills are expensive.
And let's learn about another key word.
bill.
bill.
Now we're not talking about a person named Bill.
A bill is money you have to pay for something.
You have to pay for air conditioning.
The company will send you a letter.
And that is called your bill.
You also get a bill at a restaurant.
After you finish eating your food at a restaurant, the waiter will bring you a
bill.
It tells you how much you have to pay.
If you live in an apartment, you may also have to pay bills for things at your
apartment.
You have to pay bills for the Internet, the water and the lights in your
apartment.
Sometimes you have to pay a lot of money in one month.
I really don't like to pay bills.
Well friends, we have learned a lot in this conversation.
I know that heat waves aren't fun.
But there is more to learn in Conversation C.
So let's go there now.
(Music).
I love to go swimming when the weather is hot.
Swimming sounds great right now.
In Austin, I always went swimming at Barton Springs.
What's that?
It's a natural spring.
Even on the hottest day, the water is always cold!
That sounds perfect!
It's a very popular place in Austin.
Are there any springs around here?
I don't know!
Let's find out.
Nathan, it's so fun to talk about Texas.
I love this lesson.
Well, I know that I'm learning a lot about Texas.
I have never been to Texas.
Well, it's a good place to go.
Friends, we learned about another place to go in Texas.
Mark says you can keep cool there.
It's called Barton Springs.
So have you ever been there before, Katie?
Well no, actually I have not.
But it's a popular place in Austin.
And that's what Mark says, too.
And I think there's a key word there.
You're right. Thank you, Nathan.
Let's look at it.
popular.
popular.
If something is popular, a lot of people enjoy it or like it.
So Barton Springs is a popular place.
It is a place that a lot of people like to go to and visit.
What else is popular?
Can you think of anything, friends?
I can.
Movies are popular.
Some kinds of music are popular.
Now you try to think of something else that is popular, friends.
I know one more thing.
Sometimes we say that people are popular.
Maybe a movie star is popular because a lot of people like that person.
Well, later Mark asks Susie if there are any springs around the station.
Let's look at that key word right now.
around.
around.
If something is around something else, it is near it or close to it.
So Mark is asking if there are any springs near the station.
We can use this word in other ways.
I might ask if someone knows if there is a good restaurant around the office.
I want to go to eat near the office.
And we could also say that it's around the time that we need to go do something.
If it's almost 5:00, I could say that it's around the time for me to go home.
Or this way. Let me try.
Nathan, I think it's around the time to review our key words.
Oh, yeah. It is getting very close to that time.
Maybe we should do that now?
Here is your first key word.
season.
season.
Winter is a cold season.
keep.
keep.
It's snowing outside. Keep warm!
bill.
bill.
I got my phone bill today.
way.
way.
Let's find another way to win.
around.
around.
Are there any restaurants around here?
popular.
popular.
Rice is a popular food in China.
OK, try to remember all of your key words, friends.
But now let's take a break.
We'll be back soon.
