Hello, everyone.
It is a beautiful day here at the LTE TV studio.
You're watching Let's Talk in English.
My name is Nathan.
And I'm glad to be teaching you today.
Our topic today is WEATHER.
And the title of our lesson is Heat Wave!
Heat Wave!
Uh, well Katie, can you tell everyone what a heat wave is?
I can, Nathan.
Friends, a heat wave is a time when the weather is so hot for many days in a
row.
They're not fun.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And I think that you will learn a lot in today's lesson.
But we need to get ready for it.
So take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
There's a big heat wave this week.
The temperature is 100 degrees!
That's dangerous.
People can get sick!
Ken and Susie are really hot.
Is the air conditioner on?
Yes. But then it breaks!
A repairman can fix it.
But right now they can use a fan.
Sounds like things are heating up at the TV station.
So let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hey, Susie.
The weather is really hot today.
The temperature is already 100 degrees.
It's not usually so hot here!
We're having a big heat wave.
We are.
I can't walk my dog in this heat.
And I can't exercise at the park.
It's too hot!
Hot weather can be dangerous.
You can get sick.
It's definitely summertime at the TV station.
Ken says the weather is really hot today.
How hot is it, Katie?
Well, it says that it's already 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 38
degrees Celsius.
That's so hot!
And Ken says that they're having a heat wave.
A heat wave is a few days where the weather is much hotter than normal.
It can last a few days or even longer, like a few weeks.
In some places, heat waves can last a few months.
Heat waves are not fun.
All that heat can be very dangerous.
And actually in the United States, there are some places that get over 100
degrees often.
But we have a word that we need to talk about here that Katie just said.
It's a key word.
dangerous.
dangerous.
If something is dangerous, it is not safe.
Something dangerous can hurt you.
Sometimes things we do are dangerous.
If you drive a car too fast, that is very dangerous.
Or some objects, some things can be dangerous, like a knife.
You have to be careful around those dangerous things.
And hot weather is dangerous because if you get too hot, you can get really
sick.
And that's our next key word.
sick.
sick.
If you are sick, your body is not well.
If you are sick, you should stay home.
When we are sick, anything can be wrong.
Your head may hurt.
Or you may have a fever.
You could have a cold.
Or your stomach could hurt.
There are a lot of ways we can be sick.
When the weather is too hot, it can make us sick, too.
Some people get a headache.
And a lot of people get dehydrated, which means that they do not have enough
water.
They have not been drinking enough.
Getting sick is no fun.
And it's really not fun to get sick from a heat wave.
Nathan, have you ever been anywhere where there has been a heat wave?
Yes, I have been in a few heat waves.
You all know it can get very hot here.
And it can in America, too.
That's right.
Texas actually has a lot of heat waves, so I really know how hot it can be.
So I know that they're not having fun at the station right now.
But we need to go to Conversation B right now and find out more about the heat
wave.
(Music).
Let's turn on the air conditioner.
It's already on!
Are you sure?
The air is so hot in here!
Very sure.
The station's air conditioner is very old.
It's working too hard today.
I see. Give me some paper, please.
Why do you need paper?
I can make a fan.
Nathan, it's... it's really hot here today.
Isn't the air conditioner on?
Well, I thought so.
But maybe not.
It is very hot.
We... we should ask someone about that.
I... I don't think it is on.
I don't really know what to do.
Uh... Katie uh, we could uh, we could teach some key words.
I... I think we just used one.
Oh, great idea.
Why didn't I think of that?
Let's look at the first key word.
air conditioner.
air conditioner.
An air conditioner is one of the best things in the world.
It's an object that cools the air in a room.
You usually use an air conditioner during the summertime when it is hot outside.
In Taipei, many stores and restaurants use air conditioning a lot.
Most people stay inside during the summer because it is cold inside when the air
conditioner is running.
And just so you know, friends, we can call the air conditioner the AC if you
want.
That's a shorter way to say it.
You know, Katie, I think you're right.
The air conditioner might not be on.
Well, can we go talk to someone?
Well, we're sort of in the middle of a show and teaching, so maybe not now.
Oh! But I have an idea.
What are you going to do?
Uh well, we can use our clipboards as fans.
That's a great idea, Nathan . Good job!
And that's what Ken did in the conversation.
And we used the key word there.
Let's look at it.
fan.
fan.
A fan is an object that moves or blows air around so you feel cool.
Now when I use this fan, I can make the air move so that I can cool down.
A lot of people have fans in their home.
It's cheaper to use a fan than to use an air conditioner.
And the word "fan" can be a noun and a verb.
Nathan is using a fan to fan himself.
Well, this is helping me cool off.
So it's a good thing to do when the air conditioner is not on.
Now friends, I think you should also know that fans can be machines, not just
things like this.
Sometimes there are fans on the ceiling or fans that are machines that move like
this, too.
That is true.
I have a fan in my bedroom that sits on the floor.
And it blows the air around my room so that I don't have to turn on my air
conditioner.
It saves me money.
Well, let's go to Conversation C and see what happens.
(Music).
Do you hear that?
What's that noise?
It sounds bad.
Now I don't hear any noise.
I feel hot. Really hot.
Me, too!
And now I don't feel any cool air!
This is bad.
Oh, no! The air conditioner is broken!
Let's call a repairman. He can fix it.
I'm calling right now!
Hurry!
Uh oh! It sounds like things are not too great at the station right now.
What happened, Katie?
Susie heard a noise.
And Ken says that it sounds bad.
Right. And then Ken and Susie both say they feel really hot.
And Ken says he doesn't feel any cool air.
Why don't they feel cool air, Nathan?
Well, the conversation says the air conditioner is broken.
But Ken has an idea.
Ken's always thinking of ways to save the day.
You're right.
He says they can call a repairman.
And a repairman is someone who can repair or fix things.
If something is broken, like a TV, a repairman will come and fix it.
That's what the conversation says.
And we've been using a key word, we should probably talk about it.
fix.
fix.
If you fix something, you make it OK or whole again.
That's right.
If I have a broken cellphone, I want to get it fixed so that I can use it again.
Ken and Susie want to get the air conditioner fixed.
If they get it fixed, it will work again.
They will have cold air at the station.
Right. But now I think we should review today's key words.
Here's your first key word.
dangerous.
dangerous.
That's a dangerous area. Don't go there.
sick.
sick.
The sick child didn't go to school.
air conditioner.
AC.
air conditioner.
AC.
The air conditioner is broken today.
fix.
fix.
Hannah fixed her broken bicycle.
fan.
fan.
Let's use the fan. I'm hot.
Good job, friends.
Keep practicing your key words at home.
We're going to take a short break now.
But we'll be rightback.
