Welcome to LTE TV.
You are watching Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for coming to be here with us today.
My name is Nathan.
And I'm ready to teach you some English today.
Are you ready to learn?
We are going to continue our topic on FOOD.
And the title of today's lesson is called The Perfect Picnic.
Now the perfect picnic sounds interesting.
But Katie, what do you think would make a picnic perfect?
Well, that is a great question, Nathan.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
And I think a lot of things can make a picnic perfect.
If the weather is good and the food is good, that's a perfect picnic for me.
Well friends, we have a lot more to learn about picnics.
We'll find out what makes a picnic perfect.
Are you ready?
Let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Well, it's summertime.
And summertime is the perfect time for picnics.
And here to tell us all about picnics is Miss Penny Picnic.
Welcome, Penny Picnic!
Thanks, Rob.
I love talking about picnics!
So tell us what makes a picnic perfect.
Location is very important.
Find a spot that's not too crowded.
Like at a nice park?
Yes! Or have your picnic near a lake or a stream, or on a beach!
You like picnics near water!
I do! But a picnic in the mountains is lovely, too.
Well, Penny Picnic is in the studio today with Rob.
And what's the first thing she tells us to do, Nathan?
She says to find a spot that's not too crowded.
That's a key word today.
spot.
spot.
A spot is a place where you do something, or where you stay for a while.
It's usually a small area.
Penny says to find a spot that's not too crowded.
So find a place where there are not a lot of people.
That will make it better for your picnic.
We may also say: This is a great spot to play sports.
Or, that's a great spot to go hiking.
It just means a good place to do something.
You're right.
And what is her next tip, Nathan?
Well, Penny says to have your picnic near a lake or a stream, or even on the
beach.
Now there is a key word in there to talk about.
stream.
stream.
A stream is another small body of water.
It is like a river, only it does not move very fast.
The water in streams usually flows slowly.
I think it's very relaxing to sit by a stream.
You can listen to the water.
It'd be a great place for a picnic.
That's a great tip from Penny.
It is.
But I think we have even more tips in Conversation B.
(Music).
Let's talk more about picnics at parks.
Many parks have picnic tables and trash cans.
That's convenient.
What about bugs?
Use lemon or orange peels.
Why?
Bugs don't like those fruits.
Just put the peels near your food, and bugs will stay away.
Any other tips?
Cover your food and drinks as often as you can!
Well, Penny says that many parks have picnic tables and trash cans.
And what does Rob say, Nathan?
He says that's convenient.
And that's a key word.
You're right.
Let's look at it.
convenient.
convenient.
If something is convenient, it means it is easy.
It works for you.
It is convenient to have tables and trash cans at a park.
Because that means it is easy to eat there, and then throw away your trash when
you have a picnic there.
You're right.
And I may say that it is convenient for me to go to work because I only live two
MRT stops away from my job.
For me, that is convenient.
Then Rob asks another question.
He says, "What about bugs?" And that's the next key word.
bug.
bug.
A bug is a small insect.
Bugs usually have wings.
And they're usually tiny.
A lot of people don't like bugs.
And I know I wouldn't want to have bugs around when I'm having a picnic.
That's so true.
I would not, either.
But Penny gives us a tip for bugs.
She says to use lemon or orange peels because bugs don't like those fruits.
And there's another key word.
So let's learn about it.
lemon.
lemon.
A lemon is a small fruit that is usually green or yellow on the outside, and
always yellow on the inside.
Lemons taste sour.
They might even make your mouth hurt when you eat them because they are so sour.
But you can make lemonade with lemons.
And that is a very delicious drink.
Well, our last key word for this conversation is "cover." So let's look at it
now.
cover.
cover.
If you cover something, you put something else over it, like this:
Nathan, please cover your eyes.
Uh, like this?
Well, exactly.
Thank you for covering your eyes, Nathan.
If you cover your drinks and food on a picnic, bugs can't get into them.
That's a great tip.
Uh, Katie, I have a question.
What, Nathan?
Uh, can I uncover my eyes now?
Oh... yes. Sorry about that, Nathan.
OK, friends, let's go to our Read It right now.
(Music).
What makes a picnic perfect?
Finding the perfect spot!
Choose a pretty place that's not too crowded.
A picnic by a stream might be a good place!
A park can also be a good location.
Parks often have trash cans and picnic tables.
Those things are convenient.
But what about bugs?
How can you make them stay away?
Try lemon or orange peels.
And remember to cover your drinks and food!
Well, we learned a lot about picnics so far today.
Penny told us a lot of tips on how to make your picnic perfect.
What do you think was the best tip, Katie?
Hmm, that's a good question.
I think the tip on finding a perfect spot is important.
It's always a good idea to have the best spot picked out for your picnic.
I agree.
But our Read It uses another word we should probably look at.
That word is "location." A location is the same as a spot.
It is a place.
So you can pick the perfect spot or the perfect location for your picnic.
That's right, Nathan.
And don't forget, friends.
You can use the peels of lemons or oranges to keep the bugs away.
But what is a peel?
We should learn about that word.
A peel is the skin of a fruit that you take off.
When you eat fruit, you usually do not eat the outside of it.
Now an apple peel you might eat.
But a lemon peel, no.
That is the peel on the outside.
That's right. Do not eat the lemon peel.
You can throw it away.
Or like Penny Picnic said, you can use it to keep the bugs away.
These have been some great tips.
But right now I think we should review our key words.
Here's your first key word.
spot.
spot.
This is a good spot for taking pictures.
stream.
stream.
Are there any fish in this stream?
convenient.
convenient.
I live by my school. That's convenient.
bug.
bug.
Oh, no! There's a bug in my drink!
lemon.
lemon.
Can you slice a lemon for my tea?
cover.
cover.
Don't look! Cover your eyes!
Good job, friends.
We hope that you remember and practice your key words.
But now it's time for us to take a shortbreak.
