Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Thank you for joining us here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And I'm one of your LTE teachers.
We're happy to have you here today.
Today our topic is still FOOD.
This is a fun topic.
And we have part two of our lesson, A Picnic on the Fourth of July.
A Picnic on the Fourth of July.
How do you usually celebrate the Fourth of July?
Well, when I'm in the United States, my family sometimes buys their own
fireworks.
And they light them one by one so we can watch the fireworks together for a long
time.
It's very fun.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
And I'm one of your teachers here on LTE TV.
Now it is time to open your magazine and find Let's Begin to read today.
Katie will read it with you right now.
Let's begin!
Rob has fried chicken for the picnic.
But it smells good, so he wants to eat it now!
Ken has a watermelon.
He'll slice it at the park.
Watermelon is healthy!
Rob and Ken might have another picnic next month.
They can have it at Lake George and it will be perfect!
OK, let's go on to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Rob, what are you doing?
Ken! I'm waiting for you!
I just bought some fried chicken for the picnic and I'm ready to go!
You were going to eat some of the fried chicken!
No, I wasn't.
OK, I was!
The chicken smells so good.
I couldn't wait to taste it!
It does smell really good.
But that chicken is for the picnic.
Ken and Rob are in Conversation A.
And Ken asks Rob, "What are you doing?" That's right.
And Rob says he's waiting for Ken.
He says he just bought some fried chicken for the picnic and he's ready to go.
Nathan, you just used our "Use it!" sentence.
Good job!
Let's use it again.
I just ran a mile and I'm ready to take a rest.
Good sentence.
But what about this?
I just took a long nap and I'm ready to go play sports in the park.
That's a great sentence, Nathan.
Now friends, make your own "Use it!" sentence.
Let's get back to the conversation, though.
Now Rob says he was going to eat some of the fried chicken.
Why would he do that, Nathan?
Well, he says that the chicken smelled really good.
He just couldn't wait.
That's right.
And you just used a key word.
smell.
smell.
If something smells, you can sense it with your nose.
Foods often smell good.
And when they smell good, you can't wait to eat it.
If things smell bad, we say they have a bad smell.
Some foods, like stinky tofu (Chinese), have a bad smell.
You don't like to be around it.
That's right.
So let's learn more in Conversation B.
(Music).
But I'm hungry now.
Maybe we can each have one piece in the car.
Good idea!
What do you have for the picnic?
A watermelon.
It's in my car.
I'll slice it at the park.
Good. Watermelon is healthier than fried chicken!
Yes, that's true!
Hey, we should have another picnic next month.
We can have it at Lake George.
Well, Rob and Ken decide to have a piece of chicken in the car.
I guess they couldn't wait to eat, right, Katie?
That's right.
And then Rob asked Ken what he has for the picnic.
Now remember? Ken said he would bring a watermelon.
He says he'll slice it at the park.
I think we should explain that key word.
slice.
slice.
When you slice something, you cut into... cut it into thin pieces so you can eat
it.
You usually slice bread, fruit, cheese or sometimes meat.
Oh, and... and don't forget pizza.
You can also slice pizza.
Now slicing food makes it easier to eat.
And when you slice food, you actually cut it into slices.
Slices of food are easier to pick up and bite into.
Yes, you can have a slice of fruit, a slice of pizza, anything like that.
Then Rob says watermelon is healthier than fried chicken.
Let's look at this next key word.
healthy.
healthy.
If something is healthy, it is good for you.
You want to eat it because it is good for your body.
Fruits and vegetables are really healthy.
We should eat them every day.
But I think some foods can be unhealthy, right, Nathan?
That's right.
There are healthy foods that are good for you, and unhealthy foods that are bad
for you.
Cookies, cake, candy, fried foods, they are all unhealthy foods.
They are not good for your body.
And they can make you gain weight.
And that's why we need to try to eat healthy.
Well, after that, Rob says they should have another picnic.
He says they can have it at Lake George.
And Katie, that is the next key word that we need to look at.
lake.
lake.
A lake is a body of water.
It is bigger than a pond, but it's smaller than the ocean.
That's right. Lakes can be big.
But they're fun to visit.
They're surrounded by land.
And usually you can take a boat out onto the lake.
So Katie, have you ever been to the lake?
Well actually, yes.
My friend used to have a big lake house at a lake in Texas.
We would go every summer and swim and play in the water.
It was so much fun.
So when you went to this lake, did you ever have any picnics there?
Actually, all the time.
It was my favorite part of visiting the lake.
We would picnic next to the water.
But Nathan, what about you?
Did you go to the lake a lot in the United States?
Well, you know, there are some lakes in the United States that are very famous.
And I've been very close to them, but I haven't been in them.
They are in the northern part of the United States.
And they are so big that they are salt water, like the ocean.
They're very big lakes.
OK. Well, and just so you know, there is a lot of stuff you can do at the lake,
like going out on a boat, going swimming or going fishing.
You can do it all at the lake.
But friends, it's time to go to Conversation C right now.
(Music).
That's a great idea!
We can rent boats there, too.
And we can swim!
Perfect! What else can we do at Lake George?
We can watch fireworks!
During the summer, there are fireworks every Friday night.
That's great!
And we'll see fireworks tonight, too.
And eat a lot of fried chicken!
If you don't eat it all in the car on the way!
Well, I don't know about you, Katie, but all of this talk about picnics is
really making me want to plan one.
I think we should get the LTE team to go on a picnic.
That's a great idea!
We can take food and maybe music.
How about this weekend?
Perfect! We can tell everyone later.
Well Nathan, you just used our key word for this conversation.
We should talk about it.
perfect.
perfect.
If something is perfect, there is nothing wrong with it.
Ken says that idea is perfect because he can find nothing wrong with it.
We often say an idea sounds perfect when we are excited about it.
If something sounds perfect, we want to do it.
And sometimes I say the weather is perfect.
I say this when it's sunny and warm outside.
It's not too hot, and it's not too cold.
It's not windy.
It's perfect.
Well, Rob and Ken definitely sound excited for this picnic.
You're right, Nathan.
They get to go out on a boat, swim and watch fireworks.
That does sound like a perfect time, Katie.
I love the lake in the summer.
Me, too.
But do you know what we need to do now, Nathan?
What's that?
We need to review our key words.
Oh. Well, that is a perfect idea.
Here is your first key word.
smell.
smell.
Mom is making dinner. It smells so good!
slice.
slice.
Can you slice this cheese for me?
healthy.
healthy.
Exercise often and eat healthy foods.
lake.
lake.
Let's swim in the lake tomorrow.
perfect.
perfect.
It's a nice day! The weather is perfect!
Very good job, friends.
We hope that you remember all of today's key words.
And now I think it's time for us to take a short break.
But we'll be right back.
(Music).
