Hi, there.
This is LTE TV.
And you are watching Let's Talk in English.
We're here to learn some English.
I am your teacher, and my name is Nathan.
Are you ready to learn some things today?
Well, our topic today is FOOD.
FOOD.
And why are we talking about food?
Well, our lesson is called is A Picnic on the Fourth of July.
A Picnic on the Fourth of July.
Katie, what is the Fourth of July?
Well, it's a holiday in America.
It's actually the United States' birthday.
It's a fun day.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
And I'm really excited for this lesson because I love picnics.
But we need to get ready.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to your Let's Begin for today.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Tomorrow is the Fourth of July!
There is a picnic at Riverside Park.
Many people will celebrate America's birthday together.
Ken will take a watermelon.
Rob will take fried chicken.
Susie will take ham and cheese sandwiches in her picnic basket.
They can sit on chairs or on the grass.
They can all watch fireworks!
Well, let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Ken, are you ready for tomorrow's picnic?
Yes! I'm always ready for good food, Susie!
Me, too!
I love the Fourth of July!
Yes. We can celebrate America's birthday together.
So what will you take to the picnic?
I'll take a watermelon.
Wonderful! I'll take some sandwiches.
Well, it looks like our friends are ready to celebrate a holiday.
Katie, what holiday are Ken and Susie excited about?
Oh, they're excited about the Fourth of July.
That's a great holiday.
It's one of my favorites.
What do you do on the Fourth of July, Nathan?
Well, there are lots of things you can do on the Fourth of July.
Some people like to eat together.
And also, you can watch fireworks.
Maybe that's the most famous thing to do.
The Fourth of July is important.
It celebrates America's birthday.
Sometimes when we mean the U.S.A., United States, we just say "America." The
Fourth of July is when America became a country.
And we need to look at a key word now.
celebrate.
celebrate.
When you celebrate something, you do something fun to remember and enjoy it
because it is important.
We celebrate holidays like the Fourth of July or Christmas.
You probably celebrate Chinese New Year.
And we also celebrate people's birthdays.
Those are important celebrations.
And Katie, you just used the noun of our key word - celebration.
When you celebrate something, you may have a celebration, like a party or
something.
This makes holidays and birthdays very special.
Now our friends at the station will celebrate this holiday by going to a picnic.
And they're going to take lots of things.
Nathan, what are they going to take?
Well, they're going to take a watermelon and some sandwiches.
But watermelon is a key word.
Let's look at it.
watermelon.
watermelon.
A watermelon is a large fruit.
This is a small one.
And it's green on the outside, and pink or yellow on the inside.
And watermelons are a great fruit.
They're very sweet.
On the Fourth of July, most people eat watermelon.
A lot of people think it is a good fruit to eat when it's hot outside because
watermelons are cold and juicy.
Let's find out more about this picnic in Conversation B.
(Music).
What kind of sandwiches?
Ham and cheese sandwiches.
Do you like those?
Yes, I do!
Great. I can put them in my picnic basket tomorrow!
I can put some paper plates in there, too.
Good idea.
What will other people take?
Carol will take potato salad.
Rob will take fried chicken.
Delicious!
Oh! I can take something else.
Susie wants to take ham and cheese sandwiches to the picnic.
And right away, we see a key word.
cheese.
cheese.
Cheese is a kind of food that is made from milk.
You can eat it with a lot of different foods.
And like Susie, you can put it on sandwiches.
Or you can eat it by itself.
Cheese is also good to eat that way.
But Susie is taking ham and cheese sandwiches.
Those are great sandwiches.
What do you think, Katie?
Well, ham and cheese sandwiches are OK.
But my favorite are turkey and cheese sandwiches.
Those are my favorite.
And friends, just so you know, the Chinese word for cheese comes from the
American word.
They're almost the same.
But Nathan, where could Susie put those sandwiches?
Well, she says she can put them in her picnic basket.
We should probably look at that key word.
You're right, Nathan.
The next key word is...
basket.
basket.
This is a basket.
A basket is a container that has a handle that you use to carry things.
You can usually put food for a picnic into a basket because that makes it easy
to carry, like this.
That's a great picnic basket.
Baskets can come in a lot of different sizes.
You can find small, medium or large baskets.
I think this one is large.
And you can put a lot of things in a basket.
Anything you need to carry can go in a basket.
Well, now let's look at today's "Use it!" sentence.
I can take something else.
I can (blank) something else.
Let's use it.
I don't like that food.
I can eat something else.
Or, I don't want to watch that movie.
I can watch something else.
Good job, Nathan.
But I have one more.
I don't want to go there.
I can go somewhere else.
So say your own "Use it!" sentence at home.
But right now we need to go to Conversation C.
(Music).
What? More food?
No. I can take some chairs and a blanket!
Good! Some people can sit on the grass.
Yes. So what time is the picnic?
It is at 6:30 at Riverside Park.
And then there are fireworks at 9:00.
I love fireworks.
But I also love something else.
What's that?
We don't have work tomorrow!
Well, Ken says he can take some chairs and a blanket to the picnic.
Susie said that's good, and some people can sit on the grass.
And that is a key word.
Let's look at it.
grass.
grass.
Grass is the green plant that covers the ground.
Grass is always outside.
Most of the time you play in the grass when you go to the park, or when you play
in someone's front yard or backyard.
And Susie says the picnic will be at Riverside Park.
So they will sit on the grass at the park.
One of my favorite things to do is lay in the grass at the park on a sunny day.
It's so relaxing.
And you know what else they will do at the picnic, Katie?
What's that?
Well, they're going to watch the fireworks.
That sounds like so much fun.
Fireworks are fun.
That is something else that people do on the Fourth of July.
People in America light fireworks to celebrate.
The fireworks go up into the air.
And they make so much noise.
And the colors are beautiful.
But you know, Katie, people here also set off fireworks.
I hear and see a lot of fireworks during Chinese New Year.
That's true.
I also hear a lot of fireworks on that holiday.
Fireworks are a great way to celebrate things.
Too bad we don't have any fireworks now.
I'd like to celebrate.
Why do you want to celebrate, Nathan?
Because it's time to review our key words.
Please say them with us.
Here's your first key word.
celebrate.
celebrate.
Today is Ed's birthday. Let's celebrate!
watermelon.
watermelon.
Watermelon is a big fruit.
cheese.
cheese.
Put some cheese on my sandwich.
basket.
basket.
All the food is in this picnic basket.
grass.
grass.
Don't walk on the grass.
Good job, friends.
I hope that those key words are useful to you.
Try to say them with a friend and get in a lot of practice.
We will be right back.
Don't goaway.
