Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English right here at LTE TV.
Thank you for learning English with us today.
I am your teacher, and my name is Nathan.
I am glad to see everyone of you here.
Well, our topic today is called SHOPPING.
That is a new topic.
And our lesson is called What's at the Convenience Store?
What's at the Convenience Store?
There are a lot of things there.
But Katie, what do you like to buy at convenience stores?
Well Nathan, I usually like to buy food or coffee because when I go to the
convenience store, I'm in a hurry.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
And we have a great month for you.
I hope that you're ready to start learning with us.
But let's get ready for today's lesson.
So take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Ken needs some batteries for Rob's microphone.
But the studio doesn't have any!
Can Megan order some?
Yes, but Ken needs batteries now.
Where can he go?
Susie suggests the new convenience store down the street.
Tony owns that store.
He sells a lot of things, like food, drinks and batteries!
He's very helpful.
Well, let's learn more about the convenience store in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hi, Ken. What are you looking for?
Hey, Susie. I'm looking for batteries.
We don't have any.
Megan can order more today.
But I need batteries now!
Rob's microphone doesn't work.
He needs it for the show!
Go to the new convenience store down the street.
They sell batteries.
Great! Thanks!
It looks like there is a small problem at the station.
Ken is looking for batteries.
But Susie says they don't have any.
So what can they do, Nathan?
Megan can order some.
And that is this month's first key word.
How exciting!
Let's take a look.
The key word is...
order.
order.
If you order something, you ask for it to be sent to you.
The station needs batteries.
So Megan will order batteries from a store.
She will call the store, tell them they need batteries, and the store will send
the batteries to the TV station.
You can order a lot of different things.
I might order a movie off the Internet.
And when you go to a restaurant, you order food.
You ask for the food you want to be brought to you.
But depending on what you order, it can take some time for it to come to you.
If I order a drink or a meal, it may only take a few minutes for it to be
brought to me.
But if I order a movie or a book from the Internet, it could take a couple of
weeks to be sent to my house.
That's why Ken says he needs batteries now.
He sounds a little bit upset.
You know, I think he is, Nathan.
But like Susie says, there's a convenience store down the street.
That's lucky for him.
That is lucky.
And Katie, that's also the next key word.
convenience store.
convenience store.
A convenience store is a small store that is usually open until late at night.
These stores usually have a lot of different kinds of food and drinks for people
to buy.
And they usually also have small items you may need to buy, like pencils, pens
or medicine that you take when you're sick.
Do you go to the convenience store a lot, Nathan?
Oh. Well, of course.
There are a lot of convenience stores in Taipei.
And "convenient" means easy.
It's easy to go inside and buy what you need quickly.
And the prices are pretty cheap, too.
That's true.
And that's all the time we have now.
So let's go to Conversation B.
(Music).
Wow! That convenience store sells everything!
I know! And things are inexpensive there!
The man at the counter is very helpful, too.
I know. His name is Tony.
He owns the store.
He has a very nice store.
Yes. He sells all kinds of things.
He sells pens, candy, flowers...
I know! I was just there!
Well, Ken likes the convenience store.
He says it sells everything.
And Susie says things are inexpensive there.
Inexpensive is not expensive.
That's very important.
And then Ken says the man at the counter is helpful.
Let's take a look at that key word.
helpful.
helpful.
If someone is helpful, they give a lot of help to other people.
If you have a question or you need someone's help with something, a helpful
person will happily help you.
But not only people are helpful, right, Katie?
Well, what... what do you mean?
Well, things can be helpful, too.
Sometimes I say having a computer is very helpful because I can do my work on
it.
It helps me do my work.
Well, that's a great example.
And we hope that Let's Talk in English is helpful for you.
We hope that it helps you learn English.
Now in our conversation, we find out some things about Tony.
And what else do we know about him, Nathan?
Oh, he owns the store.
That sounds like an important word, "own".
It is! It's also the next key word.
Let's look at it.
own.
own.
If you own something, it is yours.
If you buy something, like a book, it is yours.
You own the book.
I own a lot of books.
Tony owns the store.
He bought the store, and now it is his.
You can call him the owner.
Owner.
Let's look at our "Use it!" sentence for this conversation.
He sells all kinds of things.
So let's try to use it.
Kerry reads all kinds of magazines.
Steve... buys all kinds of fruits, maybe apples, bananas, pineapple...
Another example is: Ralph works at all kinds of places.
I have another "Use it!" sentence.
I teach all kinds of students, and I learn all kinds of things.
Well, this has been a great conversation.
But there's even more to learn in Conversation C.
Let's go there now.
(Music).
How late is the store open?
It's open until midnight.
Good. I'm working late today.
But I get a short break for dinner.
I can go there!
Yes. Tony sells drinks, sandwiches and other food.
Everything there is good!
Wow, Susie, you must shop at that convenience store a lot.
Almost every day.
Tony knows me well!
We learn some new things about the store in Conversation C.
What do we find out first, Katie?
Well, Susie tells us that the store is open until midnight.
So this means you can go to the store until midnight.
But at 12 a.m., it closes.
Stores usually close at a certain time.
If you want to know when a store closes, you can ask: What time do you close?
Or, how late are you open?
Most stores close around 9 or 10 p.m.
But convenience stores stay open late.
In our conversation, the store is open until midnight.
But some stay open all night long.
Right. Now Susie tells him that Tony sells drinks and other food.
Now there is a key word to look at.
drink.
drink.
A drink is anything like water, juice, tea or coffee that you swallow.
Drinks can be hot or cold.
You want to drink when you're thirsty.
You usually have a drink when you eat a meal.
And "drink" can be a noun or a verb.
There are two different ways to use that word.
Well friends, it is time to review today's key words.
Let's do that now.
Here's your first key word.
order.
order.
I order books from this website.
convenience store.
convenience store.
Buy some candy at the convenience store.
own.
own.
Who owns that nice red bike?
drink.
drink.
I'm thirsty. I need a drink.
helpful.
helpful.
George is a very helpful son.
Good job, friends.
Those are all your key words.
But be sure and practice them some more at home.
You can learn a lot from them.
Let's take a short break.
We will be rightback.
