古母亲节起源于希腊,古希腊人在这一天向希腊神
话中的众神之母赫拉致敬。在 17世纪中叶,母亲节流传到
英国,英国人把封斋期的第四个星期天作为母亲节。在这一
天里,出门在外的年青人将回到家中,给他们的母亲带上一
些小礼物。 现代意义上的母亲节起源于美国,由
Amanm.Jarvis( 1864- 1948)发起,她终身未婚,一直陪
伴在她母亲身边,在母亲于 1905年世纪, Amanm 悲痛欲
绝,两年后( 1907年), Amanm 和她的朋友开始写信给
有影响的部长、商人、议员来寻求支持,以便让母亲节成为
一个法定的节日。 Amanm 认为子女经常忽视了对母亲的感
情,她希望母亲节能够让人多想一想母亲为家庭所付出的一
切。 第一个母亲节于 1908年 5月 10 日在西弗吉尼亚
和宾夕法尼亚州举行,在这次节日里,康乃被选中为献给母
亲的花,并以此流传下来。 1913年,美国国会通过了一份
议案,将每年 5 月的第二个星期天作为法定的母亲节。母亲
节从此流传开来!

2. Father’s Day
人们在庆祝母亲节的同时,并没有忘记父亲的功绩。
1909年就开始有入建议确定父亲节。据说第一个提出这种建
议的是华盛顿的约翰 ·布鲁斯 ·多德夫人。多德夫人的母亲早
亡,其父独自一人承担起抚养教育孩子的重任,把他们全部
培养成人。 1909年,多德夫人感念父亲养育之恩,准备为他
举行庆祝活动,同时,想到所有的父亲对家庭和社会的贡献
,于是给当地一家教士协会写信,建议把 6 月的第三个星期
日定为父亲节。该协会将建议提交会员讨论,获得了通过。
1910年 6 月,人们便在此庆祝了第一个父亲节。当时,凡是
父亲已故的人都佩戴一朵白玫瑰,父亲在世的人则佩戴红玫
瑰。这种习俗一直流传至今。但是开始时父亲节的日期各不
相同,而且有的地方用蒲公英作为父亲节的象征,有的地方
则用衬有一片绿叶的白丁香作为父亲节的象征。直到 1934年
6月,美国国会才统一规定 6月的第三个星期日为父亲节。
