THE FIRST PERIOD
Ⅰ.TEACHING AIMS

Ⅱ.TEACHING STEPS
Step 1 Make clear the teaching aims
Tell the students that we're going to learn how to ask for and how to give
advice/suggestions.
Step 2 Presentation
1.Lead-in
The teacher says the following sentences: I caught a cold yesterday and now I
have a headache. What should I do? Collect advice/suggestions from the students. For
example
You'd better go to see a doctor.
I think you can take some medicine and have a good rest.
2.Tell the students that we're going to learn a dialogue between Jane and Zhou
Lan. In the dialogue, Zhou Lan is giving Jane some advice.
T: Please listen to the dialogue carefully with your books closed. While listening,
find the answers to the following questions.
What kind of experiment does Zhou Lan talk about?
(She talks about a tomato experiment.)
What does Jane need to do the experiment?
(Jane needs the lab, plant food, some young tomatoes, two boxes, a ruler and
some soil.)
3.Get the students to listen once again, fill in the blanks according to the
dialogue.(See WBb 1)
4.Get the students to read the dialogue in pairs. Allow them several minutes to
discuss the difficult sentences after practice. If they have any, they may ask the
teacher to explain them.
5.Possible problems
1)That's why you need the lab.
Teacher's explanation:“Whyclause”is a Noun Clause as Predicative. It means
“That's the reason why you need the lab.”
2)Then grow some tomatoes in one box which has plant food in the soil and
some in another box which doesn't. Teacher's explanation: Put some powder in the
soil ,put the soil in one box, and then grow some tomatoes in this box. At the same
time, grow some tomatoes in another box of soil without powder.
Step 3 Practice
1.Tell the students that there are several useful words and expressions in the
dialogue. Ask them to read the following sentences so as to understand the meaning
and the usages.
(This part may also be shown on the projector.)

2.Ask them to sum up the usage of the words and expressions and then write
the structure on the blackboard.

3.Allow them several minutes to make sentences with the words and
expressions on the blackboard.
4.Check up their sentences.
Step 4 Exercises(shown on the projector. See WBb 4)
Step 5 Read the dialogue again and find out the different structures of giving
advice or suggestions in the dialogue. write them on
the blackboard.(See WBb5)
Step 6 Consolidation and further practice
1.Go over the expressions and structures on the blackboard and make sure Ss
can use them.
2.Ask several pairs to go to the front and act out their dialogues.
3.Communicative activities.
Allow Ss several minutes to make up a similar dialogue giving advice. The
following topics are for them to choose.

Step 1 Revision
1.Check the exercises.
2.Ask some Ss to recite the dialogue or make some sentences using what they

Step 2 Make clear the aims of this period.
Make sure that the Ss understand the letters and tell them how to write a letter.
Encourage them to discuss the usages of the words and expressions in this lesson.
Step 3 Presentation
1.Lead-in
T: In our daily life, letters play an important part. We can exchange information
through letters. People sometimes write letters to ask their good friends for advice.
Now, I have two letters. One is from Ken; the other is from Yang Mei.
(Prepare two envelopes and write the two letters ahead of time.)I also have two
titles

2.Fast-reading: Read the letters quickly and make some notes for the following
questions.
1)Is Ken enjoying his new school? Why?
(No. Because other students went to the same junior middle school, so they got
along well with each other. They made fun of Ken. So he spent a lot of time alone. He
found it hard to make friends with them.)
2)Why doesn't Yang Mei want to spend her winter vacation with her cousin?
(They used to be very good friends. Recently she discovered that her cousin had
started to tell lies. She told him that it was wrong to tell lies, but he just laughed at
her.)
3)What's Amy's advice for Ken?
(Don't worry about being short. Look for a special friend. Don't spend too much
time alone.)

(Tell the students to scan the text. Their eyes should move quickly by jumping to
save time. Take in several words at a glance in order to get the meaning of the whole
phrase; avoid going backwards to read something a second time.)

Read the answering letter again and find the information of the following.

appearance. You don't need to be sad about that.)

lose such a friend.)

best to talk with him or her as much as possible. Why not begin to write diaries in
