What's on…? That sounds interesting. 2.To train the Ss' ability of telling stories. 3.To train the Ss' ability of making up dialogues. Ⅱ.TEACHING STEPS Step 1  Make clear the teaching aims Say to the Ss: Today we'll learn a new dialogue. It's about a movie whose title is “Fight for Freedom”. In this class, we'll try to understand the dialogue and master the expressions in it. Step 2  Presentation 1.Learn the second part of Lesson 49 first. Get the Ss to talk about the films or TV plays they have seen/watched recently. The teacher may start by asking. T:1) What films have you seen recently? Or: What TV plays did you watch last night? Or: What's on at the cinema this week? 2)What's it about? 3)How do you like it? 4)What's the name of the hero/heroine? …… 2.Introduce something about Abraham Lincoln to the Ss. T: Born in a poor family in 1809, Lincoln led a hard life during his childhood. He received little school education. But through his hard work, he was elected the 16th president of the U.S. He led the North to win the Civil War, and is remembered as the great saver of black slaves. For more details, please refer to the passage of Lesson 50. Step 3  Listening 1.SB Lesson 49 Part 2. Say to the Ss: T: A new film “Fight for Freedom ”is on at the cinema this week. Explain: “on” here means “being shown ”and “freedom” is the noun form of “free”. And now two friends are talking about it. Listen to the dialogue and try to find the answers to the following questions. 1)What's the new movie about? 2)When did the story take place? 2.Play the tape for the Ss to listen with books closed. Then get some Ss to answer the above questions. Suggested Answers About black slaves' fighting for freedom and the great leader, Lincoln: The story took place in a time when there were black slaves in North America. Step 4  Practice 1.Get the Ss to practise the dialogue in pairs. Then ask some pairs to act it out. 2.Ask the Ss to talk about their favourite films or TV plays. Encourage them to use expressions like What's on…? What's it about? It's about a time when… That sounds interesting. In the newspaper … 3.After a few minutes, get some pairs to act theirs out in front of the class. Step 5  Matching exercise 1.SB Lesson 49, Part 1. First get the Ss to learn the new words by explaining them. slave ---- a person who is the property of another and is made to work hard for his owner. slavery ---- the custom of having slaves set free ---- liberate, give freedom to in the end ---- at last, finally 2.Then carry out the matching exercise, the Ss have to match the sentences to the pictures. Check out the answers (1-2; 2-1; 3-4; 4-3) Step 6  Story telling 1.Before doing the exercise, the teacher may give more information about the pictures. The following may help them. 1)First, black people were captured in their hometown, Africa, then they were shipped to the new continent---- America, where they were sold or bought like animals. This is known as the slave trade. 2)Most black people were sold to the southern part of America, where they were made to work hard in the big plantations for the slave owners. They lived a miserable life there. They had to work long hours, hadn't enough food to eat and were whipped or even killed by slave drivers freely. A great number of the blacks died. 3)Later on, Lincoln was elected as President of the U.S. He fought fiercely against slavery and tried to set the slaves free. But the slave owners wanted to keep the slavery. Thus fighting broke out. 4)At last, the North won. Slavery was banned. The blacks gained their freedom, they broke up their irons and cheered for their freedom. 2.Get the Ss to tell the story according to the pictures and the above information given by the teacher. Divide the class into small groups, let them do it one by one. After a while, ask some representatives to tell the story to the class. Step 7  Consolidation Get the Ss to do more practice to master the expressions, which they have learnt in this lesson. (See WBb 1) And get  the  Ss  to  know the  usages of “end, on, set ”, the teacher reads the sentences for the Ss to listen and understand. (See WBb 2) Step 8  Workbook Wb Lesson 49, Ex. 1 and 2. Ex.1 can be done first in pairs. Then check the answers with the whole class. Af ter completing the dialogue, get some Ss to read and act it out. In Ex. 2, the Ss should do it alone first. Then ask them to read the passage and check the answers themselves. The teacher should make sure that they understand the story and fill in the right answers. Step 9  Summary and further practice 1.Go over the expressions learnt in this lesson. 2.Show the Ss the following pictures, let them tell the story according to them. Step 10  Homework 1.Write down the story according to the pictures in Part 1 in their exercise books. 2.Making up a dialogue about a new film or a TV play. Ⅱ.TEACHING STEPS Step 1  Revision 1.Check up the homework exercises. 2.Get some students to tell their stories according to the pictures given in the last period. Step 2  Make clear the teaching aims Tell the Ss the teaching aims in the first part. Step 3  Preparation for reading 1.SB Lesson 50. Part 1. Give a brief introduction to the life of Abraham Lincoln. Say to the Ss T: Today we're going to read about Abraham Lincoln. He was the President of the USA from 1860~1865. He came from Kentucky. When he was young, he studied law and became alawyer. Later he became President. When he was President, there was a civil war between northern and southern states. Lincoln was a great president, so he is still remembered today. 2.Explain the new words and expressions, so that some of the new language items will be familiar to the Ss when they read the passage. 1)as a child as/when he was a child 2)no more than----only 3) in all ---- in total, totally 4)set up ---- start/found 5)break out----(war, fire, etc.)appear, start suddenly 6)break away from----go away from 7)consider…as---- regard…as/look on…as Step 4  Reading 1.Before reading, ask the Ss to look at the questions on top of Page 50 and those on Page 118, Part 1. Make sure that they understand them. 2.Ask the Ss to read the passage to find the answers to the questions. Then check the answers with the whole class. Possible Answers Questions on page 50. 1)His greatest work was to build a free state for all the people. 2)Because the slave owners hated him for setting the slaves free. Questions on page 118. 1)In Kentucky, USA, on February 12th, 1809. 2)He used to work hard and help his father on the farm. 3)In a store and later in a post office. 4)By studying law in his spare time. 5)In all his political life, he worked hard to build a free state for all the people. 6)Because the Southern states wanted to set up a country of their own, where they would be free to keep black slaves. 7)It lasted 4 years. 8)Lincoln was killed at a theatre in Washington, D.C. 9)Because the slave owners in the South and rich people hated him. Step 5  Note making 1.Speech Cassette Lesson 50. Play the tape and let the Ss listen. 2.Play the tape again. While listening, the Ss do Part 2, on page 118. Write what happened in the following years according to the text. 3.Check up the answers. Step 6  Retelling 1.Do Part 3. on page 118. It's a summary of the story of Lincoln. It will help the Ss retell the text. Check the answers with the class. 2.Write the following clue words on the Bb for the Ss to refer to. (See WBb 1) 3.First get the Ss to do it alone. Then divide the class into groups, let them tell the story one by one. Finally ask some students to do it in front of the class. Step 7  Story Telling After reading the story of Lincoln, get the Ss to think about the great people in our history, such as Confucius; Su Dongpo; Sun Zhongshan; Mao Zedong; Li Dazhao. The Ss may choose one they like to tell a story in time order. Here is the timeline of Li Dazhao, and the main events in his life for the Ss to refer to. (See WBb 2.) Then get some Ss to do the practice orally. Step 8  Summary and further practice 1.Go over the explanations of the words and expressions in this lesson. 2.Do Part 2 on page 119. Complete the passage with verbs in the right form. Let the Ss read through the passage and put in the missing words. They may discuss with their partners. Don't refer to the text. Then check the answers with the whole class. Step 9  Homework 1.Retell the story about Abraham Lincoln. 2.Write the story of Li Dazhao in their exercise books. Ⅱ.TEACHING STEPS Step 1  Revision Ask some Ss to retell the story of Lincoln or Li Dazhao or some other people. Step 2  Make clear the teaching aims Say to the Ss:T:Today we'll try to understand the grammar----the Attributive Clause, and I hope you, after learning, can make sentences containing attributive clause. Step 3  Study useful expressions 1.Go over the new words and expressions in Lesson 50. 2.Then get the Ss to do practice on them.(See WBb 1) Step 4  Language study 1.Review the Attributive Clauses introduced by who, whom, that, which. Get the Ss to complete the following:(See WBb 2) 2.The teacher says the following sentences, and asks the Ss to put the two sentences into one. 1)This is the house. Lincoln lived in it. (This is the house where Lincoln lived.) 2)I lived five weeks in Beijing. I'll never forget them. (I'll never forget the five weeks when I lived in Beijing.) 3)My mother worked on a farm. It was nine kilometres away. (The farm where my mother worked was nine kilometres away.) 4)It was June 17.My brother was born on that day. (The date when my brother was born was June 17.) 3.Explain to the Ss that where and when clauses modify the nouns or noun phrase before them. Step 5  Practice SB Lesson 51,Part 2. Go through the phrases in the table and make sure the Ss understand them. Then ask them to make sentences as many as possible from the two tables. 1.Ask some Ss to say their sentences to the whole class. 2.Do the second part in the same way. 3.Get the Ss to make up sentences about themselves. The teacher may give some help. He may ask the Ss. 1)What's the name of your building? Ss may answer: The building where I live is Hongxing Building. 2)When were you born? Ss may answer: The date when I was born was… 4.SB Lesson 51,Part 3.First explain the difference between which and where/when. Remind the Ss that where is used for a place, when for a time, and which for a thing. Ss do it on their own. Then check the answers with the whole class. Step 6  Dialogue 1.SB Lesson 52,Part 1.Tell the Ss Abraham Lincoln is talking to Tom Grade,who writes for a newspaper.Let the Ss read the dialogue in silence to find the answers to the following questions. 1)What does Lincoln say about slavery? 2)What does he say about the farmer's problems? 3)What does the phrase“call for”mean here? Answers: 1)He says he will set all slaves free. 2)freedom is more important than farmers' problem. 3)It means“demand”here. 2.Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. 3.Let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs.Then ask some pairs to act it out. 4.Explain the phrase“call for”. “Call for”means“demand, need or require”.e.g. 1)Success in school calls for hard work. 2)The project calls for a lot of money. And it also means“to visit some place to get seeming or to go to some place with somebody. e.g. 1)We called for the packages at the post office. 2)I'll call for you at nine o'clock. Step 7  Writing 1.SB Lesson 52,Part 2.Do the first one as an example, and then let the Ss work by themselves. Check the answers with the whole class. 2.Do Ex.1 on page 119 and Ex.3 on page 120. Step 8  Summary and further practice. 1.Go over Checkpoint 13.Review the part of grammar and expressions. (More practice see WBb 3.) 2.Pairwork. Get the Ss to make up dialogues. One is expected to be a newspaper reporter, the other Abraham Lincoln or anyone they like. The following questions may help them. 1)When and where were you born? 2)What are you interested in? 3)What's your opinion about…? …… Step 9  Homework 1.Make up sentences which contain attributive clauses introduced by Where, when. 2.Do Ex.1 and 2 on page 120 and Ex.1 on Page 121 in the exercise books.
