Long before the white men came to the America, the land belonged to the American Indian
nations. The nation of the Cherokees lived in what is now the southeastern part of the United
States.
After the white man came, the Cherokees copied many of their ways. One Cherokee named
Sequoyah saw how important reading and writing was to the white man. He decided to invent a
way to write down the spoken Cherokee language. He began by making word pictures. For each
word he drew a picture. But that proved impossible there were just too many words. Then he took
the 85 sounds that made up the language. Using his own imagination and an English spelling
book,Sequoyah invented a sign for each sound. His alphabet proved amazingly easy to learn.
Before long, many Cherokees knew how to read and write in their own language. By 1828,they
were even printing their own newspaper.
In 1830,the US congress passed a law. It allowed the government to remove Indians from
their lands. The cherokees refused to go. They had lived on their lands for centuries. It belonged to
them. Why should they go to a strange land far beyond the Mississippi River?
The army was sent to drive the Cherokees out. Soldiers surrounded their villages and
marched them at gunpoint into the western territory. The sick, the old and the small children went
in carts, along with their belongings. The rest of the people marched on foot or rode on
horseback. It was November, yet many of them still wore their summer clothes. Cold and
hungry, the Cherokees were quickly exhausted by the hardships of journey. Many dropped dead
and were buried by the roadside. When the last group arrived in their new home in March
1839,more than 4 000 had died. It was indeed a march of death.

The city of Brooklyn needed a bridge to span the East River that separated it from
Manhattan. Because ice formed on the river during the cold winter of 1867, ferryboats (渡
船 )could not transport passengers as usual. John A.Roebling, the leading bridge builder of the
day, offered to construct a wire suspension bridge (吊桥)to span the river.
Wire suspension bridges had a bad reputation since several of them in various parts of the
world had collapsed in high winds. Roebling insisted that his bridge would be safe because he
would use extra supports. However, the great bridge builder died before the construction of the
bridge began. His son,Colonel Washington A.Roebling, offered to take his place as director of
the difficult project.
One of the greatest hazards (危险的事 )of the construction project was the danger that the
men who worked underwater would contract (感染) the “ bends ”. This is a malady (疾病)that
occurs when men working in compressed air come back to normal air pressure too quickly. Many
workers suffered from this painful condition. Even Colonel Roebling experienced it several
times, the last time becoming paralyzed (瘫痪) from it.
Fearlessly,Roebling watched the process of his bridge through field glasses from a nearby
apartment. Although unable to speak or even move much,he worked out a code which he used to
communicate with his wife. Tapping his fingers on her hand,he was able to send instructions to
his workers.
Finally it was time to string the strong wire cables between the towers. On May
24,1883,thirteen years after it had been started, the Brooklyn Bridge was officially opened
with a great celebration. This bridge remains to this day, a monument to a man and his son who
were willing to tackle (解决)a seemingly impossible task.

I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all. And what is more,I could not speak
a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the town centre,I decided to lose my
way on my second day, since I was sure that this was the better way of getting to know the
strange city. I got on the first bus in the morning, rode on it for several stops, then got off it and
walked on. The first two hours passed happily enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for
lunch. After walking about for some time,I decided I’d better ask the way. The trouble was that
the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I
pronounced badly.
I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I
shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to
give him some money before I went on my way. Then I met a policeman. I asked him at once. The
policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and took me by the arm. There was a strange look in
his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking on.
About an hour passed and I found that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green
fields could be seen on either side of me,I had come all the way into the country. The thing left
for me to do was to find the nearest bus station.
