Which do you prefer,…or…? I prefer…to… have sports be good at read out exciting Ⅱ.TEACHING STEPS Step 1  Make clear the teaching aims and demands of this period Tell the Ss that in this period we are going to learn the dialogue and learn some new words and expressions. Step 2  Presentation What sports do you know? (Collect the English words on the Bb.) volleyball  basketball  football  table tennis  tennis  badminton  golf  horseriding  shooting  wrestling  sailing  swimming  skating hunting fishing skiing Which sport do you like better,…or…? (Use all the names of sports the Ss have learned to answer this question.) Then ask the Ss: Which sport do you prefer,… or…? Ask one student to answer the question using the following structure. I prefer… to… (Ask more students to practise the two structures.) Step 3  Learn the dialogue 1.Let the Ss listen to the tape. We are going to learn the dialogue. It's about sports. First we'll listen to the tape. After that there are two questions for you to answer. Please listen carefully with your books closed. Questions: 1)Which Sport does A prefer? (horseriding) 2)What about B? (shooting) 2.Let the Ss listen to the tape again and repeat. Ask them to pay more attention to the pronunciation and intonation of the dialogue. 3.Get the Ss to read the dialogue in pairs. Allow them enough time to discuss any difficult points so as to understand the dialogue well. If they still have problems after the discussion, they may turn to the teacher for help. 4.Paraphrase the following sentences and words. 1)Which do you prefer, horse-riding or shooting? Which do you like better, horse-riding or shooting ? 2)I prefer horse-riding to shooting. I like horse-riding better than shooting. 3)In fact, I'm on our city team. In fact, I'm working for/belonging to our city team. 4)exciting----that causes someone to lose calmness and to have strong feelings, often pleasant Step 4 Practise the dialogue in pairs Ask two or three pairs to practise the dialogue before the whole class. Step 5  Let the Ss make similar dialogues according to some pictures Names: football, basketball, sailing, jumping, running ,swimming, shooting, wrestling Possible dialogue. ---- Do you often have sports? ----Sure/Of course. ----Which sport do you prefer,…or…? ---- I prefer…to… Step 6  Do some listening. I'm going to read out eight sentences. Which picture am I talking about?(Here please explain to the Ss the verbal phrase read out. It means read aloud.)(Read)“Well done! Right in the center.” (Ask) Which picture is it? Ask the whole class to answer it together. (Picture 1----shooting) Read the remaining sentences. Let the Ss check their answers with each other, and then with the whole class. Sentences. 1.Well done. right in the center. (1 shooting) 2.Bill throws the ball to Harry. Oh dear! He's dropped it. (6 basketball) 3.And Xiao jun has kicked another goal! That's fourtwo to Centre School! (5 football) 4.Oh dear! Bob is in the floor! (2 wrestling ) 5.Li Zhong is one metre in front of Yang Lan. (7 swimming) 6.Oh dear! Wang Xiaohua has dropped the stick! (3 relay race) 7.Jane has fallen off! I hope she's not hurt. (4 horseriding) 8.Steve has fallen in! (8 sailing) Step 7  Summary and further practice 1.Ask the Ss to sum up all the expressions and structures in this lesson. Which do you prefer,…or…? I prefer…to… have sports, be good at, read out, exciting 2.Let the Ss make some sentences using these expressions and structures. Step 8  Writing Give the Ss the key words and let them write a short passage with the words. Allow them enough time to do it. Key words: have sports, prefer…to…, be good at, exciting (See WBb1) Step 9  Homework 1. Finish the exercises in this lesson. 2. Revise the names of different sports. 3. Preview Lesson 38. Ⅲ .WRITING ON THE BLACKBOARD Possible passage I love sports. I often have sports at school. I prefer football to basketball. In fact, I'm on our school football team. I'm also good at shooting. It's very exciting. (After they have finished, they can show their work to their partners. Ask one or two Ss to read out their work to the whole class.)   THE SECOND PERIOD   Ⅰ .TEACHING AIMS 1. To talk about the Olympic Flag and the Olympic Games. 2. To train the Ss' abilities of skimming the text to find out the general idea, scanning the text to find out specific information quickly and finding topic sentences of each paragraph. Ⅱ .TEACHING STEPS Step 1  Make clear the aims and demands of this period Tell the Ss that in this period we'll learn our text and in this text we'll learn some thing about the Olympic Flag and the Olympic Games. Step 2  Revision 1. Check the homework. 2. Revise the names of sports. 3.Allow the Ss some minutes to make up dialogues with the names of different sports and practise the following structures. Which do you prefer,…or…? I prefer… to… Step 3  Preparation for Reading In order to call the Ss' attention, the teacher may ask a question like this:“Do you know the Olympic Flag? ” Then show the picture of the Olympic Flag to the Ss. Ask them to discuss the Olympic Flag. After the discussion, the teacher may ask some Ss to say something about it. (About the Olympic Games: There are five rings joined together. The five rings stand for five continents. They are Asia, America, Africa Europe, and Oceania.They are joined together as a sign of friendship. The different colours stand for different continents. (Asia: yellow; America: red; Africa: black; Europe: blue; Oceania: green) Step 4  Reading 1.Ask the Ss to read the text from beginning to end and try to find out the answer to the following question. When and where were the first Olympic Games in modern times? (in 1896 in Greece) 2.Ask the Ss to read the text again and check what they know about the following numbers. 4years/776BC/393AD/1896(311/13)/1988 (4 )/1992 ((8, 000//150/250/ 16/12. 3.Allow the Ss enough time to discuss the meaning of these numbers first in groups and then in class. The teacher should write some key words on the Bb. 1)every 4 years, take part in 2)around the year 776 BC, the old Olympics 3)about the year 393 AD, stop 4)in 1898,the first Olympic Games,311 competitors, 13 countries 5)in 1988,4 gold medals 6)in 1992, 8,000 competitors, 150 countries, 16 gold medals, 12 4.Do some questions and answers according to the clues on the Bb. 1) How often are the Olympic Games held? 2) When and where did the old Olympic Games begin? 3) When did the Olympic Games stop? 4) When did the first Olympic Games in modern times happen? 5) How many competitors were there in the 1896 games? 6) In which Olympic Games did Carl Lewis win 4 gold medals? 7) When and where did the 25th Olympic Games begin? 8) How many competitors went there? 9) How many gold medals did the Chinese team win in Barcelona? 10)How many gold medals were won by the Chinese women? (This part may be shown on the screen of the projector. ) Step 5  Discussion Ask the Ss to find out the topic sentence of each paragraph. Tell them that a topic sentence is usually put at the beginning or at the end of a paragraph. But some times topic sentences may appear in the middle. hi this text the topic sentences are put at the beginning of each paragraph. Step 6  Deal with problems Ask the Ss to read aloud the text and discuss the problems if any. Paraphrase: 1.The old Olympic Games from which the modern games came began around the year 776 BC in Greece. (The old Olympic Games began about the year 776BC in Greece and the modern games came from the old Olympic Games.) Tell the Ss to note the position of the preposition from before the relative pronoun which. It belongs to the phrasal verb come from. ) Ask the Ss to find out some other sentences in this text and try to paraphrase them. Step 7  Summary and further practice 1.Ask the Ss to sum up the new words and expressions and help them to explain them in English. (Write the new words and expressions on the Bb.) athlete ----a person who is very good at sport and who competes in games compete ----to try to win in competition with someone else (See WBb1) competitor----someone who takes part in a competition unusual----something strange, not usual motto ----a short sentence or a few words taken as the guiding principle of a person and the way he believes. swift----fast prize----something of value given to someone who is successful in a game. race, competition etc. take part in ---- work or play with other people in… 2.Ask the Ss to fill in the gaps with the new words. (This passage may be shown on the screen of the projector. ) (See WBb3) Step 8  Discussion Oral Topic: Which sport do you like best? Step 9  Homework 1. Finish off the exercises in this lesson. 2. Read the passage again. 3. Retell the text according to the clues on the Bb. 4. Point out the attributive clauses in this lesson. Ⅲ . THE THIRD PERIOD   Ⅰ .TEACHING AIMS 1.To master the usage of the new words and expressions in the text by making sentences. 2.To learn the grammar the Attributive Clause 3.To develop the Ss' writing skill by letting them rewrite the text with some notes. (Build up some notes on the blackboard for an account of the Olympic Games.) Ⅱ . TEACHING STEPS Step 1  Make clear the aims and demands Tell the Ss that in this lesson we are going to learn some new words and expressions and learn the grammar the Attributive Clause. Step 2  Revision 1.Check the homework exercises. 2.Review Lesson 38 by asking the following questions. 1) Where did the Olympic Games begin? 2) When did the first Olympic Games in modern times happen? 3) How often are the Olympic Games held? 4) What sports do they have? 5) What's the Olympic motto? 3.Help the Ss call to mind the new words and expressions using word cards. athlete compete competitor competition unusual motto swift medal prize take part in hand in (to give to someone in charge, by hand) Hold up one of the cards. First show to the Ss the side with the Chinese word(s) on it, then the other side with the English word(s)on it. Ask the Ss to make up sentences with these new words. (Better say out the sentences including these words.) Step 3  Dictation Tell the Ss that we are going to dictate several sentences. We are going to listen to each sentence three times. Ask the Ss to listen to the whole sentence first, then write it down and finally go over it again after they finish it.(These sentences may be shown on the screen of the projector so that the Ss may have a check.)(See WBb1) Step 4  Deal with the grammar T:(Ask student)Where were you born? S: I was born in Beijing. T: The place in which he was born is in Beijing. Present some other sentences. Where do you live/study? (Do a transformation drill following the above example. Write the model sentences together on the Bb. Call the Ss' attention to the position of the preposition. Tell the Ss that the sentences they have just dictated are from the text. There are attributive clauses in them. Ask them to point them out. ) Step 5  Practice Ask the Ss to join each pair of the following sentences into one, using the second as an attributive clause. (This part may be shown on the screen of the projector. )(See WBb2) Step 6  Summary and further practice Tell the Ss that when we're talking about people the preposition usually follows the verb in spoken English, and that when we are talking about things the preposition are usually put either before the relative pronoun which (but not that) or after the verb. If the preposition follows the verb, the relative pronoun may be omitted. Present some other exercises for the Ss to do.Multiple choice.
