Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Thanks for joining us here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And I hope that you are excited for today's lesson.
Today we're still talking about ENTERTAINMENT.
But we have a new lesson for you.
It's called The Foreign Film Festival.
The Foreign Film Festival.
Now have you been to a foreign film festival before, Nathan?
Well, I would love to go to a foreign film festival.
But I have never been to one.
I would like to go to any kind of film festival.
But I haven't.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
Are you ready to learn some English about movies and maybe different cultures
today?
Well, let's look at our Let's Begin.
You can find it in your LTE magazine, and read along with Katie right now.
Let's begin!
Rob interviews Mr. Movie about the foreign film festival.
Movies from around the world will be shown.
Many of them have received positive reviews.
Mr. Movie tells Rob about a film called Wadjda.
It is a drama by a female director.
Well, let's learn more about this movie in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Now do you like foreign films?
Well, Mr. Movie is here to tell us all about next week's foreign film festival.
Please help me welcome Mr. Movie!
Welcome back to the show, Mr. Movie.
It's great to be here, Rob.
Mr. Movie, the foreign film festival starts next week.
Tell us about it.
Movies from around the world will be shown at the festival.
Many of them are getting great reviews.
Excellent.
Are there any we shouldn't miss?
Yes. The film Wadjda has received many positive reviews.
Well friends, you can put one more movie on your list to see.
This film came out just last year, and is also at the foreign film festival
we've been talking about the last two days.
Mr. Movie has a little to say about the festival.
First, he says that movies from around the world will be shown at the festival.
Remember talking about the phrase "around the world"?
We hope that you do.
And there's another word to learn in this sentence.
Get ready for your first key word of the day.
show.
show.
If you show something, you let others see it.
The festival is going to let people see foreign movies.
In Conversation A, show becomes "shown," S-H-O-W-N, because it is after the word
"be." But you will often hear this word as "show" as well.
A mom might tell her kids to do their homework before they play.
Sometimes we also just tell people that we want to show them something.
Like: let me show you my new TV.
And next, Mr. Movie says that the movies are being shown... being shown are
getting great reviews.
And there's our next key word.
review.
review.
A review is what someone thinks about something, like a movie, book or a
product.
Many newspapers and magazines have reviews in them.
Usually we think of reviews being written down.
But you can hear a review on the radio or even see one on TV.
I don't read or listen to many reviews, except from what my friends say.
What about you, Nathan?
Well, I often read or listen to movie reviews.
I think they often help me decide what movies are worth going to see or watching
later at home.
OK.
Uh, Mr. Movie doesn't give a review.
But he does tell us about a movie that we shouldn't miss.
He says the film Wadjda has received many positive reviews.
Now there are more key words in this sentence to look at.
The first is...
receive.
receive.
This means to get something from someone.
Right.
You might receive an email from a friend.
At New Year's, you might receive some extra money from your company.
I sometimes receive news about my family from my parents.
Now movies receive reviews after people see them.
But what are positive reviews?
Well, "positive" is the second key word in the sentence.
positive.
positive.
Positive things are good things, or at least they're good for you.
So a movie gets a positive review when someone likes it.
We also talk about positive people that always see good things happening and are
good to others.
Well, I think that positive people are fun to be around because they... they're
never unhappy usually.
They can find the good in anything.
But I'm interested in this movie Wadjda now.
So I think we should hear more about it in Conversation B.
(Music).
What is Wadjda about?
It's a drama about a girl who wants a bicycle.
But girls aren't supposed to ride bicycles in Saudi Arabia.
It is the first film to be shot in Saudi Arabia.
Really? Wow.
And that's not all.
The director is Saudi Arabia's first female filmmaker.
So it's an important movie.
It is.
You should see it if you get the chance.
Well, I really want to see this movie called Wadjda.
I think I could learn some things about the culture in Saudi Arabia.
And it sounds interesting, too.
I think so, too.
Mr. Movie says it's a drama about a girl who wants a bicycle.
That doesn't seem like a very good story.
But girls aren't allowed to ride bikes in that country.
And I was surprised by that.
But let's look at a key word here.
drama.
drama.
Dramas have serious or emotional stories.
A drama probably won't make you laugh much.
But it might make you cry.
You know, I think I have a good example of a drama that everyone knows, Nathan.
Really! Well, what is it?
Well, it's called Titanic.
It's a serious and emotional story.
I think a lot of people cried during the story of Jack and Rose.
I know I did.
That is a great example, Katie.
Now next, the director of Wadjda is female, which is another key word.
female.
female.
If someone is female, they are a girl or a woman.
Here, "female" is an adjective.
A female director.
But you could also say that the director is a female.
"Female" can also be a noun.
Right.
So if you have a dog, you could say: My dog is female.
That's an adjective.
Or you could say: My dog is a female.
That's a noun.
They almost sound the same.
But they are different.
Well, I'm excited for this week's Read It.
Let's go there now.
(Music).
At foreign film festivals, movies from around the world are shown.
You can watch dramas and other kinds of movies from different countries.
Often the movies at the festivals are excellent.
A new film this year is Wadjda.
It tells the story of a girl who wants a bicycle.
It is the first film shot in Saudi Arabia, and the director is Saudi Arabia's
first female filmmaker.
The movie has received many positive reviews.
Well, there are a lot of interesting things to talk about in our Read It today.
Wadjda is the first film shot in Saudi Arabia.
That is so cool!
That is really cool.
Now the word "shot" means to record video when you use it to talk about movies.
So Wadjda uses the first video recorded in Saudi Arabia.
Thousands of movies have been made in some countries.
But this is the first in Saudi Arabia.
But something else is really cool about this movie.
The director is Saudi Arabia's first female director.
Now let's look at some of those words.
A director is someone who is in charge of making a movie.
And filmmakers are just people who make films.
The two words have very similar meanings.
In Saudi Arabia, you can't ride a bike if you're a female.
So I think it's amazing that a woman made a movie in the country.
You're right. I think it is amazing, too.
And now I think it is time for us to review today's key words.
Here's you first key word.
show.
show.
Are any good movies showing on TV?
review.
review.
Is this a good film? Check the reviews.
receive.
receive.
Jack received a good score on his test.
positive.
positive.
Be nice. Say something positive.
drama.
drama.
This drama tells a really good story.
female.
female.
That is a girl cat. She is female.
Well, keep working on your key words, friends.
We'll be back after a short break.
