Hello, everyone.
This is Let's Talk in English on LTE TV.
I'm sure that you're here to learn some more English today.
And I am your teacher Nathan.
I hope we can help you learn as much as you can today.
Now let's look at our topic for today.
It is ENTERTAINMENT.
It's ENTERTAINMENT again.
And we are talking about the same lesson as yesterday - Films From Around the
World.
Films From Around the World.
Do you have a favorite foreign film, Katie?
Or what's your favorite movie?
Well, my favorite movie is a movie called The Dead Poets Society.
It's about some boys who really like to study poetry.
And they like to live life happily.
It's got a great message.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
And we have so many interesting things to talk about today.
So let's get ready for today's lesson.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Rob and Carol are discussing their favorite foreign films.
Carol likes Life Is Beautiful.
It is a wonderful movie, and it won several awards.
When Carol watches it, she cries.
Rob likes 3 Idiots.
It is a film from India about friendship.
Rob has the DVD.
If Carol wants to watch it, she can borrow it from Rob.
Well, let's learn more about this in Conversation A.
(Music).
Are you ready for tomorrow's show, Rob?
Yes. Mr. Movie and I will discuss next week's film festival.
Wonderful. I'm excited about the festival.
Me, too.
Do you have tickets to it?
Yes. My husband and I are going together.
So you enjoy foreign films.
Yes, I do. I'm a big fan.
Do you have a favorite one?
Yesterday we learned that Rob was going to the foreign film festival.
But now we know that he is even going to talk about it on his show.
That's what he means by today's first key word.
Let's look at it together.
discuss.
discuss.
Discuss just means to talk about something.
That's right.
Rob will discuss the film festival with Mr. Movie.
I think Mr. Movie can probably discuss a lot of different films.
I like discussing movies, too.
But you can discuss anything.
Some people like to discuss how their favorite sports team is doing.
Others like to discuss the things they hear about in the news.
What do you most often discuss?
In the same sentence, look at how Rob says "next week's." You can talk as if
time is a person that owns something.
Next week's film festival.
Yesterday's news.
And last year's best student.
That's a good point, Nathan.
Now the time doesn't really own those things, but it sounds like it.
Try to use that kind of phrase if you can.
Maybe tomorrow's (blank) or last month's (blank).
Next, we have a key word from Carol.
wonderful.
wonderful.
If something is wonderful, it is very good.
Carol is excited about the festival and glad that Rob will be talking about it
on his show.
Sometimes I say that a book or a movie is wonderful, but only if I really,
really like it.
You can also say: I had a wonderful time.
Or, your new hairstyle looks wonderful.
There are many different ways that you can use this word.
Now later, Rob say, "So you enjoy foreign films." Now this isn't really a
question.
But Carol answers it like it is.
That's common when someone says something they think about you.
You just have to tell them the answer.
Well, I think now it's time for us to move on to Conversation B so that we can
find out what Carol's favorite foreign film is.
I'm sure it will be wonderful.
(Music).
I really like Life Is Beautiful.
I know that movie.
It won several awards.
Yes. It's a great film.
When I watch it, I cry.
Then it must be good.
What language is it in?
It's in Italian.
Interesting. I need to watch it sometime.
Yes!
Do you like foreign films?
I do!
One of my favorite foreign movies is 3 Idiots.
In Conversation B, Carol and Rob both talk about one of their favorite foreign
films.
Have you seen either of these films, Nathan?
Well, I have seen Life Is Beautiful.
I agree with Carol, it is wonderful.
I've got to watch that movie.
I think they must both be very good.
Rob even says that Life Is Beautiful won several awards.
Now let's talk about the key word here.
several.
several.
Several means some or a few.
The movie won a few awards.
Several people that we know are going to the film festival: Susie, Ken, Rob and
Carol.
And Carol has seen Life Is Beautiful several times.
And she knows that if she watches it, she will cry.
And that's another key word we need to talk about.
cry.
cry.
Sometimes when we're very sad or very happy, water comes out of our eyes.
And that's crying.
Nathan, have you ever cried during a movie?
Well, I hadn't cried in a movie in a long time.
But I did a few months ago.
The ending of Les Miserables (Chinese) was too beautiful.
Oh, that was a really good movie.
It was so sad. But I... I really...
OK... We need to... we need to talk about something else.
I'm not going to cry on TV.
Oh. OK.
Well, did you hear Rob's next question?
He asks, "What language is it in?" That's the right way to ask.
Right.
Not just "What language is it?" but "What language is it in?".
Rob also says, "One of my favorite foreign movies is 3 Idiots." Guess what?
That is today's "Use it!" sentence.
One of my favorite (nouns) is (blank).
Like this:
One of my favorite animals is a tiger.
Or, one of my favorite students is you.
Good one.
One of my favorite foods is curry.
How about you?
Well, one of my favorite foods is pizza.
But friends, make a sentence of your own.
And right now we need to go to Conversation C and learn some more.
(Music).
3 Idiots?
I don't know that movie.
It's great.
It's a film from India.
It's about the friendship between three students.
Is it funny?
Yes. And the story is great.
When did it come out?
It came out in 2009.
I should rent it sometime.
I have the DVD.
You can borrow it from me.
Great! Thanks, Rob!
Well, I haven't seen 3 Idiots.
But I have seen a lot of pictures of it.
I think it must be well known in Asia.
It sounds like a nice movie.
Now Rob says it's about the friendship between three students.
He also says it's funny and has a good story, too.
Hmm, I guess we should see it.
Now let's look at the key word that Rob uses.
friendship.
friendship.
You probably see the word "friend" inside this word, which is very important.
If two people are friends, then they have a friendship together.
That's right.
I made some great friendships in high school and in college.
I think friendship is an important part of happiness.
Everyone needs friendship in their life.
We also talk about friendship being between two people, like Rob says.
Now Carol asks, "When did it come out?" She wants to know how old the movie is.
So Rob answers: It came out in 2009.
The movie sounds good.
So Carol thinks she should rent it sometime.
When she says "sometime," it just means at a future time.
When I see a new restaurant, I might think that I should try it sometime.
And I have friends who tell me places in Taipei that I should visit sometime.
But Carol doesn't need to rent the movie.
She can just borrow it from Rob sometime.
That's right.
But you know, Katie, we need to review key words sometime.
Well, why not now?
Here we go.
discuss.
discuss.
Let's discuss this. When can you talk?
wonderful.
wonderful.
Joe is wonderful . I like him a lot.
several.
several.
I like several actors in this movie.
cry.
cry.
Is Mandy sad? She's crying.
friendship.
friendship.
Cam and Lin have a great friendship.
And we hope that we have a great friendship with you, too.
Come back and finish today's lesson with us after the break.
We will be rightback.
