Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Thanks for joining us here at LTE TV.
My name is Katie.
And we have a great show for you today.
Today we have a new topic.
And that topic is ENTERTAINMENT.
And the title of today's lesson is Films From Around the World.
Films From Around the World.
Now Nathan, have you watched many movies from different countries?
Well, I really like to watch movies.
And I like to try to watch movies in different languages, especially Chinese.
So yes, I have.
Hello, everyone.
My name is Nathan.
And we hope that you have a great time learning some English today.
But first, let's begin with our Let's Begin reading.
Katie will read with you today.
And you can find Let's Begin in your LTE magazine.
Let's begin!
Ken and Susie talk about foreign films.
Ken doesn't like foreign films.
They are in foreign languages.
And he doesn't understand the stories.
Susie likes foreign films.
They are interesting.
She can learn about cultures around the world.
Well, today's lesson sounds very interesting to me.
So let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hey, Ken. Is Rob here?
No. He's not here yet.
Oh. He is going to the foreign film festival next week.
I have his tickets.
Why do you have his tickets?
We ordered them together.
Oh. OK.
Are you going to the festival, Ken?
Yes. I am going with my girlfriend.
She loves foreign films.
It sounds like everyone at the TV station is going to the same place next week.
Yes, they are all going to the foreign film festival.
I wish I could go, too.
Me, too.
It should be fun.
But let's talk about that phrase, "foreign film festival." The first word is
actually a key word.
foreign.
foreign.
Something that is foreign comes from outside your country.
Like foreign food.
There are many kinds of foreign food that you can try.
And a foreigner is a person from a different country.
Nathan and I may look like foreigners to you.
And you can also say "foreign countries" when you talk about countries that are
not your own.
That's right.
But here we're talking about foreign films.
Film is just another word for movie.
These movies are probably in foreign languages and made in foreign countries.
A film festival is an event where many films are shown.
Of course, the one Susie and Ken are talking about will only show foreign films.
Susie asks Ken, "Are you going to the festival, Ken?" That phrase is very
useful.
Are you going somewhere?
Are you going home?
Are you going to the park?
Hey, Katie, are you going to Conversation B?
Well, I guess we should.
Let's go there now.
(Music).
Do you like foreign films, Ken?
Not really.
I am only going for my girlfriend.
Why don't you like foreign films?
I don't understand them.
Well, the films are in foreign languages.
I know that.
I can understand the words.
There are subtitles.
But you don't understand the stories.
Right. I don't understand the cultures, either.
I see.
Hmm. Ken is going to the festival, but he doesn't really like foreign films very
much.
But he's going for a very good reason - his girlfriend wants him to.
Yes. Boys should listen to their girlfriends.
But I wonder why Ken doesn't want to go to the festival.
Susie uses a "Use it!" sentence to ask: Why don't you like foreign films?
Why don't you like something?
Why don't you like your shirt?
Looks OK to me.
Or, why don't you like the weather?
I love it when the sun shines.
Why don't you like to read?
Or, why don't you like to travel?
What "Use it!" sentence can you ask a friend today?
Ken says he doesn't like foreign films because he doesn't understand them.
That would be a problem.
But what does he mean?
What does he not understand?
Oh, I think that's a key word that we should talk about first.
understand.
understand.
If you understand something, it makes sense to you.
You know what it means.
Sometimes it might be hard to understand your teacher when you're learning
something new.
I'm always glad when I understand what someone is saying to me in Chinese.
I feel like I have learned something when I do.
But I don't understand what Ken means.
Like Susie says, the films are in foreign languages.
And I think there's another way to use the word "foreign" - foreign languages.
That's another key word, right?
That's right, it is another key word that we should look at.
language.
language.
A language is what they speak and write in a country.
My language is English.
Your language might be Chinese.
Yes, different countries often have different languages.
What other languages can you think of, Nathan?
Oh, there are so many languages.
There's Spanish, French, Malay, Tagalog and... and there are many more.
What languages do you know of, friends?
But Ken can understand the language because there are subtitles on the movies.
Now those are the words at the bottom of the screen that help you understand.
Ken's problem is that he sometimes doesn't understand the stories or the
culture.
But let's see what Susie thinks about foreign films in Conversation C.
(Music).
And some of the movies are really boring.
True. But some of them are really interesting.
Maybe.
Where are the films from this year?
They are from around the world.
There are films from Russia, China and a few other countries.
Hmm. Maybe I can read about the films first.
Then I can understand the stories.
Good idea!
Well, in Conversation B, we learned that Ken has trouble understanding the
stories and culture of foreign films.
But in Conversation C, we see that there is a second reason that he doesn't like
them.
He thinks some foreign movies are really boring.
Well, I guess some of them might be.
But I agree with Susie.
Some of them are really interesting, too.
I agree.
But now let's look at what we mean by this key word.
interesting.
interesting.
If something is interesting, it is fun to learn about.
You want to know more.
But what I think is interesting may not be very interesting to you.
I think acting and history are interesting.
But you might disagree.
You might think math and video games are interesting.
But I would disagree.
So what is interesting to you?
You can make a sentence by saying: I think (blank) is interesting.
One reason I think these foreign films would be interesting is because they are
from around the world, like Susie says.
It's interesting to see different places.
Well Nathan, let's talk about the phrase "around the world." First, "around" is
a key word.
around.
around.
There are many ways to use this word.
Here it means in many different places.
So if these movies are from around the world, they're from many different places
in the world.
And if I'm working around the house, I'm probably doing some different things at
many places in the house.
You can also say that there are so many people around the school.
The school is crowded in many places.
And Susie shows that the movies really are from around the world when she says
that the movies come from Russia, China and other places.
That's right.
Now what kind of foreign films have you seen?
What is the strangest foreign film that you've seen, Katie?
Where is a... a country that you've seen a foreign film from?
Well, I have seen a few French movies.
I can't remember the titles because they're all in French.
I'm not good at listening to other languages - like Ken.
Hmm, I see.
Well, foreign movies are fun.
But I think that we need to review today's key words now, right, Katie?
That's right.
Here is your first key word.
foreign.
foreign.
Jose comes from a foreign country.
understand.
understand.
Help! I don't understand this homework.
language.
language.
English is an international language.
interesting.
interesting.
This book is very interesting. Read it!
around.
around.
Alice has friends from around the world.
Good job, friends.
I hope that you all learned a lot today.
We've talked a lot about some interesting things.
And I really hope that you enjoyed it.
Let's take a short break now.
We will be rightback.
