Hey, welcome to Saturday here on Let's Talk in English.
We're going to review some very fun things today.
We talked about the photography contest this week and museums.
Let's see what you can remember and start our review right now.
(Music).
Hey, Joe. What are you doing?
I'm thinking, Susie.
What are you thinking about?
The station is having a contest.
I'm planning it.
What kind of contest?
It is a photography contest.
People can take photos and send them to the station.
We can choose the best ones.
That's a great idea!
What are you doing now?
I'm choosing categories for the contest.
Is pets one of the categories?
Yes. How did you know?
I see a dog in that picture.
What are the other categories?
There are three other categories: nature, people and places.
Places is a good choice.
Pictures of people are fun, too.
Are you the judge?
No. Carol is the judge.
She can choose the winners.
Are there prizes?
Yes. There are good prizes.
What are they?
Well, there are four big prizes.
They are expensive new cameras!
But there are other prizes, too.
How exciting!
I know. I'm excited about the contest!
Hello, Carol. What are you looking at?
I'm looking at the photography contest pictures.
That sounds fun.
Which one is the winner?
I don't know.
I'm trying to choose.
There are a lot of pictures.
And many look really good.
I know. How can I pick a winner?
Can we help?
That would be great!
What do you think of this picture?
It's of a building.
It's nice, but it isn't very colorful.
It isn't very clear, either.
It is blurry.
OK. How about this picture of flowers on a mountain?
It is bright and colorful.
Yes. Why don't you pick it?
I want to look at all the pictures before I decide.
OK. Let's keep looking.
How many winners do we need?
Well, we need first, second and third place winners for each category.
So we have all the winners?
No. We still need a first place winner for the places category.
This picture of a beach is my favorite one.
It should win.
I don't think so.
It looks like a cellphone picture.
But...
Carol's the judge.
She should choose.
You're right.
Hi, Susie. What are you reading?
I'm looking at some information from the history museum.
I'm doing a story on the new exhibit.
The museum has a new exhibit?
Yes. The museum gets a new exhibit every six months.
It does?
I don't go there very often.
What is the exhibit about?
It's about the history of shoes.
Shoes? Who cares about shoes?
Lots of people.
There are many fun facts about shoes.
Tell me one.
Let's see...
Long ago in Europe, shoes had really pointy toes.
Really? Why?
I don't know.
Go to the exhibit and find out!
You can learn a lot of things at a museum.
You can!
Tell me another fact.
There were no left or right shoes until 1818.
Before that, both shoes were the same.
Really!
How long is the exhibit at the museum?
It's at the museum until December.
Maybe I can go to it.
Shoes are fun. Who knew?
I didn't. But now I do!
Nice report on the new history museum exhibit, Susie.
Thanks. Go to it. It's great.
I'll go to it.
I like museums.
What kinds of museums?
Well, I like art museums and history museums.
I like natural history museums.
Many of them have exhibits on dinosaurs.
So you like dinosaurs?
Yes. And I like to learn about animals and plants.
When I travel, I always visit local museums.
That's fun.
There are some strange museums.
I know!
I'm interested in strange things!
What's the strangest museum you visited?
The Museum of Bad Art in Boston.
There is a museum of bad art?
Yes! And the exhibits are really bad.
I laughed at a lot of them.
You're supposed to.
They're bad!
I like to visit famous museums, too.
Like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City?
Yes. When I go to New York, I always go there.
That's a great museum.
I like all the ancient art there.
That's good.
Why?
Because there are more than two million things in that museum.
You'll be ancient before you see them all!
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Our guest for today is an expert on Asian art.
And he's here to tell us all about the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Please help me welcome Mr. Tsai.
Welcome to our program, Mr. Tsai.
Thank you, Rob. I'm glad to be here.
We want to hear all about the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
The museum's collection covers over 8,000 years of Chinese history.
And the collection is very large.
Yes. The collection has almost 700,000 pieces.
I've been to the museum and seen some of the collection.
It's amazing!
It is!
What's your favorite treasure in the collection?
That is a very difficult question.
Tell us about one.
There is a tiny boat carved from an olive pit.
It looks like a real boat.
I've seen it!
There is a table inside with dishes on it!
Yes! I also like the stone carvings.
And I like the...
I should ask you what you don't like.
That list would be shorter!
The National Palace Museum in Taipei has a great collection of Chinese art.
The collection covers more than 8,000 years of Chinese history.
The collection is also very large.
It has almost 700,000 treasures.
One treasure is a tiny boat carved from an olive pit.
It's amazing!
Inside the boat there are chairs and a table with dishes on it.
The museum also has beautiful stone carvings and much more.
Everyone should visit the museum when in Taipei.
Hi, everyone. Welcome...
Ow! My... my feet hurt.
I... I need to take off my shoes.
Good morning, teacher Nathan.
How are um... you?
What are you doing?
Well... hi, Chris.
I was trying my new shoes today.
But they're too new.
They hurt my feet.
Did you get the right size of shoes?
Yes, Chris, I got the right size.
But these shoes are just a little too new.
I just need to wear them more.
Oh, I'm glad I don't wear shoes.
Shoes look very uncomfortable.
Some shoes are uncomfortable.
Remember the shoes that Susie saw in the museum?
Oh, yes.
She saw pointy shoes from long ago.
Right. You can learn a lot about history when you look at very old shoes.
That's true.
But I learn more about history when I go to different kinds of museums.
What kind of museums do you go to?
Oh, I love to visit art museums.
There is a lot of interesting art in this world to see.
You're right.
Hey, Chris, do you know what kind of museums Rob likes to visit?
Oh, right! Right! This was in the lesson.
Hmm, let me think.
Uh, yes! Yes!
Rob likes to go to natural history museums.
Good guess.
You're right.
Rob likes to see dinosaurs and learn about animals and plants.
Hmm, that kind of museum sounds... a little scary to me.
Are the animals alive in those museums?
Yeah, you... you'd better skip that museum.
Maybe art museums are better for you.
Are there lots of photos in art museums?
Photos?
Yes, there are a lot of photos.
Why do you ask?
Well, I'm just wondering if they have great photos like the photography contest
at the studio.
Oh. Well, the photos in the museums are probably better.
Hmm, I suppose.
Hey, Chris, do you remember one or two of the categories from the photo contest?
Uh, I would say... people and places.
That's right, people, places, pets and nature.
Those were the categories of the photo contest.
Great job, Chris.
Can we see the photos?
Are they really good?
Well, sure, we can do that.
But first, let's take a quickbreak.
