Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English on LTE TV.
Thanks for coming.
My name is Nathan.
I'll be one of your teachers today.
And our topic again for today is AROUND TOWN.
AROUND TOWN.
What things are around town?
Well, the title of our lesson today is called National Palace Museum.
That might be around your town if you live in Taipei.
The National Palace Museum.
Katie, do you know much about this museum?
Well, I know a couple of things.
Like you said, it is in Taipei.
And I know that it is one of the largest collections of art in Asia.
It's a great museum.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
I'm one of your LTE teachers.
And I think it's time to get ready for today's lesson.
So if you have it, take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and find today's
Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Rob talks to Mr. Tsai about the National Palace Museum.
Its collection covers more than 8,000 years of Chinese history.
One of Mr. Tsai's favorite pieces in the collection is a tiny boat.
It is carved from an olive pit.
He also likes the stone carvings and many of the museum's other treasures.
Well, I hope you are excited because we are going to learn more about the
National Palace Museum.
Let's go to Conversation A right now.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Our guest for today is an expert on Asian art.
And he's here to tell us all about the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Please help me welcome Mr. Tsai.
Welcome to our program, Mr. Tsai.
Thank you, Rob . I'm glad to be here.
We want to hear all about the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
The museum's collection covers over 8,000 years of Chinese history.
And the collection is very large.
Yes. The collection has almost 700,000 pieces.
I've been to the museum and seen some of the collection.
It's amazing!
It is!
The first thing Mr. Tsai says is that the museum's collection covers over 8,000
years of Chinese history.
And there are our key words.
Let's look at the first one.
collection.
collection.
A collection is a group of things that a person keeps together.
That's right.
We can collect a lot of things and save them.
And we call that a collection.
A museum's collection usually is things like art, photographs, old letters or
pottery.
Nathan?
Now let's look at the next key word.
cover.
cover.
If something covers something else, it includes it.
The museum's collection of items covers or includes 8,000 years of Chinese
history.
Mmhm. You could also say that a test in school covers certain chapters.
Maybe it just covers chapters one and two.
The test includes those chapters.
We have some more great words to teach you now in Conversation B.
Let's go there first.
(Music).
What's your favorite treasure in the collection?
That is a very difficult question.
Tell us about one.
There is a tiny boat carved from an olive pit.
It looks like a real boat.
I've seen it!
There is a table inside with dishes on it!
Yes! I also like the stone carvings.
And I like the...
I should ask you what you don't like.
That list would be shorter!
Rob asks Mr. Tsai what his favorite thing is in the museum.
But Mr. T says that's a difficult question.
He likes a lot of things.
And what does he say he likes the best, Nathan?
He likes a tiny boat carved from an olive pit.
That sounds pretty cool.
You know, it does.
And there you used two key words.
Let's look at the first one.
tiny.
tiny.
If something is tiny, it is very small.
Mice are tiny.
Bugs are tiny.
Is anything else tiny, Nathan?
Well, cellphones can be tiny.
And we can say babies are tiny.
They are so small.
You are right.
OK, let's look at that next key word.
boat.
boat.
A boat is something that you ride in when you want to travel over the water.
Boats are so fun.
You can ride in them on rivers, lakes or oceans.
But be careful when you drive a boat.
All right, let's move on.
Mr. T also says he likes the stone carvings at the museum.
And that's our last key word for this conversation.
stone.
stone.
Stone is a hard thing that you find on the ground.
But walls and buildings can be made from stone.
Mountains are also made from stone.
In the conversation, Mr. Tsai means that there are lots of items made from
stone.
They are carved from... stone.
So pictures are cut out of the stone.
We'll look at the word "carve" in our Read It.
And we have learned a lot of great words in this conversation.
So let's go on to the Read It now.
(Music).
The National Palace Museum in Taipei has a great collection of Chinese art.
The collection covers more than 8,000 years of Chinese history.
The collection is also very large.
It has almost 700,000 treasures.
One treasure is a tiny boat carved from an olive pit.
It's amazing!
Inside the boat there are chairs and a table with dishes on it.
The museum also has beautiful stone carvings and much more.
Everyone should visit the museum when in Taipei.
If you go to the National Palace Museum, there's a special exhibit - the smart
carvings of jade and beautiful stones,
or the carvings of Ming and Qing dynasties - going on right now.
That's good to know.
Now our Read It tells us the museum's collection has almost 700,000 treasures.
That's a lot!
And it takes a long time to see most of the museum.
But it is really fun to go.
One treasure the Read It talks about is a tiny boat carved from an olive pit.
Let's look at the word "carved." If something is carved from something else, it
is cut out of it.
So the boat is cut out of the olive pit.
That's why it's so amazing.
There are even chairs and a table inside of the... the boat.
That sounds beautiful.
Our Read It says everyone should visit the National Palace Museum.
And everyone should also practice their key words.
And that's what we're going to do right now.
Here's your first key word.
collection.
collection.
Steve has a big collection of books.
cover.
cover.
This book covers the year 1902.
tiny.
tiny.
I can't read this word. It's too tiny.
boat.
boat.
Jim crossed the water in a small boat.
stone.
stone.
Dave climbed over the stone wall.
OK, good job, friends.
Practice your key words on your own.
But don't go away yet.
We'll be rightback.
