Hello, everyone.
This is Let's Talk in English, where we have fun learning English.
My name is Nathan.
I'm one of your teachers on LTE TV.
And today we have a new topic.
It's called AROUND TOWN.
And we also have a new lesson called Do You Like Museums?
So, do you like museums?
Katie, do you go to museums very often?
Well, when I have time, I like to go to museums.
I think they're interesting.
And you can learn so much at museums.
Hi, everyone . My name is Katie.
And today is going to be a great day.
But it's time to get ready for our new lesson.
So why don't you take out your Let's Talk in English magazine and turn to
today's Let's Begin?
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
There is a new exhibit at the history museum.
Susie is doing a story on the exhibit.
It is about shoes.
Susie tells Ken some facts about shoes.
Long ago, some shoes had pointy toes.
There were no left or right shoes.
Ken can learn more at the exhibit.
Well, let's go to Conversation A right now and learn some more about shoes.
(Music).
Hi, Susie. What are you reading?
I'm looking at some information from the history museum.
I'm doing a story on their new exhibit.
The museum has a new exhibit?
Yes. The museum gets a new exhibit every six months.
It does? I don't go there very often.
What is the exhibit about?
It's about the history of shoes.
Susie is reading about something.
What is she reading about, Katie?
Well, she says that she is looking at some information from the history museum.
Now that sounds interesting.
Yes, it does.
Now let's look at this important key word.
history.
history.
History is the important things that have happened before or in the past.
A history museum is a place that has lots of things from the past inside.
It may have art or paintings from the past or some old letters.
Sometimes history museums have items from certain time periods or certain
countries.
You can study history, too.
One time I studied the history of sports in America.
It was so interesting.
Do you like to study history, Nathan?
Yes, I do like history a lot.
It's one of my favorite things to learn about.
Well, Susie says she is doing a story on the museum's new exhibit.
Let's look at the word "exhibit." An exhibit is an object or collection that is
shown for people to look at.
Museums often have... different exhibits.
Museums get new exhibits every six months or eight months.
It just depends.
But let's learn more in Conversation B.
(Music).
Shoes? Who cares about shoes?
Lots of people.
There are many fun facts about shoes.
Tell me one.
Let's see...
Long ago in Europe, shoes had really pointy toes.
Really? Why?
I don't know.
Go to the exhibit and find out!
You can learn a lot of things at a museum.
You can!
Well, Ken does not seem too excited about shoes at first.
And I can't imagine why.
He says, "Who wants to learn about shoes?" Well, I know I do.
What about you, Nathan?
Well, shoes seems like a kind of strange thing to learn about.
But I do think that the history of shoes could be interesting.
And lots of other people want to learn about shoes, too.
Maybe that's why they would go to this museum.
That's right.
And Susie says there are many fun facts about shoes.
Well, I just used a key word.
So let's look at it.
fact.
fact.
A fact is something that we know is true.
And they're always right.
Yes. And real facts are never wrong.
Susie says that many... there are many facts about shoes.
She means there are many interesting things to learn about shoes that are true.
And we know that there are a lot of things that are facts.
Here is one.
The sky is blue.
Nathan's shirt is green and brown.
These things are true no matter what.
They are facts.
They are right.
Well, we learn one more fact about shoes in this conversation.
Shoes used to have really pointy toes.
If something is pointy, it has a really sharp, narrow end, like a nail.
Or a pen.
The end of a pen can be pointy.
But Nathan, we have another key word.
toe.
toe.
Toes are those things at the end of your foot.
Most people have ten toes.
Ten fingers and ten toes.
But the word "toe" can also be talking about the end of your shoe or sock.
You can say "the toe of my shoe." Now Katie, do you know any other facts about
shoes?
Hmm. Well... Oh, hey, I do have one.
Did you know that shoes used to be made out of wood until just a couple hundred
years ago?
Really? Is that a fact?
Actually, it is a fact.
People used to wear shoes made out of wood.
Sounds kind of painful.
But friends, if you study history, you can learn lots of other facts about
anything you want.
And I'm sure that we'll find out more facts about shoes in Conversation C.
So I think it's time to go there.
Let's do that now.
(Music).
Tell me another fact.
There were no left or right shoes until 1818.
Before that, both shoes were the same.
Really!
How long is the exhibit at the museum?
It's at the museum until December.
Maybe I can go to it.
Shoes are fun. Who knew?
I didn't. But now I do!
Well, Ken really wants to know more facts about shoes.
He says: Tell me another fact.
That's right, he does.
And we find out one more fact from Susie.
What is that fact, Nathan?
There were no left or right shoes until the year 1818.
And there are our key words.
Let's look at the first one.
left.
left.
Your left side is on the side of your body where your heart is.
This is my left arm and my left hand.
I am left-handed.
I write with my left hand.
And I am right-handed.
I write with my right hand.
And that's the next key word.
right.
right.
The right side is the opposite of the left.
So your right side is on the other side of your body from your heart.
A lot of people are right-handed.
And in most countries the cars drive on the right side of the street.
Now our "Use it!" sentence is:
How long is the exhibit at the museum?
How long is something going to last?
Let's use it.
Here is a sentence.
How long is the book you're reading?
Or, how long is your sister traveling in Europe?
How long is your class?
How long is the party going to last?
Well, Susie says the shoe exhibit will be at the theater until December.
Ken says maybe he can go.
He thinks shoes are fun now.
Well, who knew shoes could be fun?
I didn't.
Well hey, Nathan, you just said, "who knew," just like in our conversation.
Now friends, we say "who knew" when we learn something that we did not know.
We are usually surprised when we say it.
It's kind of like saying "Wow!" or "Are you serious?".
Now we're about to practice our key words.
But we want to make sure that you understand the two from this conversation -
left and right.
And to remember these words, there is a little song that you can learn.
Are you ready, Katie?
Oh, I think so.
OK, here we go.
You put your right hand in.
You take your right hand out.
You put your left hand in.
And you shake it all about.
You do the hokey pokey.
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about.
Well, that was fun.
But now we need to practice all of our key words.
Here's your first key word.
history.
history.
We study world history in school.
fact.
fact.
Tell me some facts about dogs.
toe.
toe.
Kick the ball with the toe of your shoe.
left.
left.
John writes with his left hand.
right.
right.
The ball is in Jason's right hand.
Good job, friends.
I hope you remember your key words, especially "left" and "right." Right now
we're going to take a short break.
But we'll be backsoon.
