Welcome, friends.
You're watching LTE TV.
And we have a great lesson for you today.
My name is Katie.
And we are both happy to be here.
Today we are still talking about ACTIVITIES.
And we have part two of our lesson for you.
A Photo Contest.
A Photo Contest.
Do you like to take photos, Nathan?
Hmm, I don't take photos very often.
But I do like to take video or film things.
I really like to do that.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
And I am one of your teachers today, and always here on Let's Talk in English.
OK, now it's time to read our Let's Begin for today.
Katie will read it with you.
And you can look at it in your LTE magazine.
Let's begin!
Carol is looking at the contest pictures.
She must pick a winner.
Ken and Rob look at the pictures, too.
Some pictures are colorful and bright.
Some pictures are not very clear.
Rob has a favorite picture.
But Carol doesn't like it.
It looks like a cellphone picture.
OK, now let's go to Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, Carol. What are you looking at?
I'm looking at the photography contest pictures.
That sounds fun.
Which one is the winner?
I don't know.
I'm trying to choose.
There are a lot of pictures.
And many look really good.
I know. How can I pick a winner?
Can we help?
That would be great!
Well, we see Carol, Ken and Rob in Conversation A.
Carol is looking at the pictures for the photography contest.
And Rob asks which one is the winner.
Do we know who the winner is, Nathan?
No, we don't.
Carol says she is trying to choose the winner.
Remember, we learned yesterday she is the judge for the contest.
But Carol is having a hard time because there are so many pictures.
And what else does she say, Nathan?
She asks, "How can I pick a winner?" I think there's a key word there.
You're right.
The key word is "pick." Let's look at it.
pick.
pick.
If you pick something, you choose it.
You take some things, but you leave the others.
Carol is trying to pick a winner.
She will pick one person to win.
The rest of the people will not win.
You can pick a lot of things.
Pick your favorite color.
When you go to the store, you pick which things you want to buy.
Or pick where you want to go for vacation.
That's a fun thing to pick.
Or pick a movie to watch or a book to read.
Well, Carol is having a hard time picking the winner of the contest.
There are too many pictures.
So let's go to Conversation B and find out more about this.
(Music).
What do you think of this picture?
It's of a building.
It's nice, but it isn't very colorful.
It isn't very clear, either.
It is blurry.
OK. How about this picture of flowers on a mountain?
It is bright and colorful.
Yes. Why don't you pick it?
I want to look at all the pictures before I decide.
OK. Let's keep looking.
Carol, Rob and Ken continue to look at all the pictures.
Rob picks out a picture of a building.
What do Carol and Ken say about it, Katie?
Well, Ken says that it's nice, but it isn't very colorful.
And then Carol says the picture isn't very clear.
It's blurry.
Katie, you used both key words just then.
I think we need to look at them.
Let's look at the first one.
colorful.
colorful.
If something is colorful, it means it has a lot of color.
It is full of color.
colorful.
If something is a bright color, we also say that it is colorful.
Red, orange, yellow, bright green.
They're all very colorful.
Rainbows are colorful.
I think sunsets and sunrises are colorful.
And paintings are very colorful, too.
Flowers are my favorite colorful things.
I think the colors are beautiful.
And sometimes if something has many different colors, we can also call it
colorful.
Now let's look at our next key word.
clear.
clear.
If something is clear, it is easy to understand or easy to see.
Carol says the picture is not clear.
So she means the picture is hard to see.
Carol also says the building is blurry.
That means you can't see its shape very well.
It is not clear at all.
Now we can also use the word "clear" to mean that you can see through it.
What is something that you can see through that is clear, Katie?
Well, windows are clear when they're clean.
And glasses are clear.
Can you think of anything else?
Well, a glass bottle would also be clear.
And now let's look at today's "Use it!" sentence.
The "Use it!" sentence is:
I want to look at all of the pictures before I decide.
Let's use it.
I want to read this book before I see the movie.
I want to eat breakfast before I go to work.
I want to go to Conversation C before we practice our key words.
And since it's time for Conversation C, I think we should do that right now.
(Music).
How many winners do we need?
Well, we need first, second and third place winners for each category.
So we have all the winners?
No. We still need a first place winner for the places category.
This picture of a beach is my favorite one.
It should win.
I don't think so.
It looks like a cellphone picture.
But...
Carol's the judge.
She should choose.
You're right.
In Conversation C, we find out how many winners are needed for the contest.
And what does Carol have to say, Nathan?
She says they need first, second and third place winners for each category.
And that's a lot of winners.
That is.
And Carol is still trying to find one more winner.
She needs a winner for the places category.
Well, Rob says a picture of the beach is his favorite.
Oh, I think that's a key word, Katie.
Oh, thank you, Nathan.
Let's learn about it.
favorite.
favorite.
If something is your favorite, you like it the best.
I like many books.
But only one book is my favorite book.
Hmm, you can ask people lots of questions with this word.
Ask someone: What's your favorite something?
Like this:
Katie, what is your favorite color?
Well, I like the colors red, blue and orange.
But red is my favorite color.
I like it the most because it is the prettiest.
But of those colors, orange is my least favorite.
I do not like it very much.
And you spell "least," L-E-A-S-T.
It means uh, just a little.
Now Nathan, what is your favorite country in the world?
Oh, that's a very hard question to answer.
I've lived half of my life in America.
But I've lived the other half of my life in Asia.
I cannot choose which country is my favorite.
I like them both the same.
So they are both my favorites.
I can say that, I think.
But the picture of the beach is not Carol's favorite picture.
She thinks it looks like a cellphone picture.
It might be her least favorite.
I think you are right.
And that is the next key word.
So let's take a look.
cellphone.
cellphone.
Now a cellphone is a phone that you can carry around with you.
I have mine with me.
So many people have cellphones these days.
This phone is called a smartphone.
You can send text messages, check your email or go online with a smartphone.
It is one of many different kinds of cellphones.
That's true.
And this is my cellphone.
It is not a smartphone.
It cannot do as many things as Katie's.
So it is not as smart.
But cellphones are still convenient because they are small, and you can take
them anywhere.
When you have a cellphone, you can call, send text messages anytime you need to.
And you can also call a cellphone a "cell" for short.
That's another good thing to know.
But I think now it's time to practice our key words.
Here is your first one.
pick.
pick.
I want to pick a new pencil.
colorful.
colorful.
This picture of candy is very colorful.
clear.
clear.
This picture is clear. It's not blurry.
favorite.
favorite.
This is my favorite book.
cellphone.
cellphone.
I have a new cellphone.
It's so cool!
OK, good job, friends.
That was some great practice with your key words.
Try to keep using these words.
And maybe talk to your friends and use those new words.
But now, we will be right back.
Don't goaway.
