This is LTE TV.
And you're watching Let's Talk in English.
We're glad to see you today.
My name is Nathan.
Are you ready to learn some new things today?
Well, our new topic is ACTIVITIES.
And our new lesson title is A Photo Contest.
A Photo Contest.
Katie, when do you like to take photos?
Well, I usually take photos when I'm on vacation because then I see a lot of
things that I would like to have pictures of.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
I hope you are ready for today's lesson.
But to get you even more ready, take out your LTE magazine and find today's
Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Joe is thinking about the station's photography contest.
People can take pictures of people, places, nature or pets.
Susie likes the categories.
They are good choices.
Carol is the judge.
She can choose the winner.
The big prizes are expensive new cameras.
This sounds like a fun contest.
So let's find out more in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Joe. What are you doing?
I'm thinking, Susie.
What are you thinking about?
The station is having a contest.
I'm planning it.
What kind of contest?
It is a photography contest.
People can take photos and send them to the station.
We can choose the best ones.
That's a great idea!
Conversation A starts with a question.
Susie asks Joe, "What are you doing?" What is Joe doing, Katie?
Well, Joe is thinking.
That's something important we should all do.
And it's also a key word.
think.
think.
When you think, you remember or imagine something.
You could also be trying to solve a problem or understanding something.
A lot of times we may say people are thinking hard.
If you are thinking hard, you're thinking a lot about something, like a problem.
But when you do your homework or study, you also think hard.
A lot of times when we think, we need quiet.
Noise makes it hard to think.
When I think, I like to be by myself.
But Nathan, what is Joe thinking about?
Well, he says he's thinking about the station's photography contest.
He is planning it.
And when you plan something, you get ready for it.
Joe is planning the contest.
So he is thinking about what he needs to do so the contest goes well.
He will decide what people need to do to win the contest.
Now photography is simply taking nice pictures with a camera.
If you take pictures a lot, you can call yourself a photographer.
Well, let's learn more about this contest in Conversation B.
(Music).
What are you doing now?
I'm choosing categories for the contest.
Is pets one of the categories?
Yes. How did you know?
I see a dog in that picture.
What are the other categories?
There are three other categories: nature, people and places.
Places is a good choice.
Pictures of people are fun, too.
Well, Joe is choosing categories for the photo contest.
Now what is a category, Nathan?
Well, a category is a group of things put together because they are the same in
some way.
So in the contest, there will be different categories.
And there will be a winner in each category.
That's right.
The first category is pets.
And that's a key word.
Let's look at it.
pet.
pet.
A pet is an animal that you keep at your home.
A lot of people have pets.
I have a cat for a pet.
Nathan, do you have any pets?
Well, I don't have any pets right now.
But when I lived in America, I had a lot of pets.
I think I had three dogs and two cats at one time.
We had a big yard with a lot of space for animals.
But once I moved to Asia, I think I just had a fish one time.
But small animals like cats or dogs, birds or fish are usually kept as pets.
And they are fun to have around your home because they are good animals, and can
be easy to take care of.
You have to spend time with your pets.
We find out the other three categories in the contest: nature, people and
places.
And "nature" is our next key word.
nature.
nature.
Nature is almost anything in the world.
Plants, mountains, lakes, oceans and rivers are all... all part of nature.
Nature is beautiful.
And that's why many people take photographs of nature.
Photographs are pictures.
And nature is nothing that people make, but something that was already there
because God made it.
And it is very beautiful.
I love exploring nature and going to new places - in the mountains or maybe
following a river.
What do you like most about nature, Katie?
Well, I think that I like nature because I can be outside.
I like to be in the sun.
So a lot of times I go hiking on warm days.
The mountains are my favorite part of nature because I get a lot of fresh air
and sun.
And I can usually be by myself to think.
Now Susie says that places is a good choice.
And that's our next key word for this conversation.
choice.
choice.
A choice is a few things that you can choose from.
We make choices by choosing things.
Susie says the places category is a good choice.
She means it was a good idea to choose places as a category.
Sometimes we make good choices.
But other times we may make bad choices.
Now a bad choice is when you choose something or you choose to do something that
may not be a good idea.
Be careful when you make choices.
In your life, you will have to make a lot of choices.
So that's important to remember.
And sometimes the good choice is not the easy choice.
Sometimes it's much harder to do what is good.
OK, now let's move on to learn some more in Conversation C.
(Music).
Are you the judge?
No. Carol is the judge.
She can choose the winners.
Are there prizes?
Yes. There are good prizes.
What are they?
Well, there are four big prizes.
They are expensive new cameras!
But there are other prizes, too.
How exciting!
I know. I'm excited about the contest!
In Conversation C, we find out that Carol is the judge of the contest.
A judge gets to choose who the winner is.
That sounds pretty fun, doesn't it, Katie?
You know, it does.
I would like to judge a contest.
That is an important job.
It is important.
And then Susie asks, "Are there prizes?" We need to learn more about this key
word.
prize.
prize.
A prize is something you get when you win something.
Prizes can be anything.
Prizes can be money or an object.
Sometimes a car is a prize.
And sometimes contests give big prizes like computers or something like that.
And it s fun to win prizes.
If you won a prize, it means that you did something well.
We find out there are four big prizes.
They are expensive new cameras.
Wow! I bet the photographers all want to win those prizes.
That sounds so cool!
But you know, there are other prizes, too.
You're right.
And that's also our "Use it!" sentence.
There are other prizes, too.
Let's use it.
There are pictures of pets.
But there are other pictures, too.
There are plates on the table.
But there are other things, too.
There are two people I know in the room.
There are other people, too.
Say your own "Use it!" at home.
The last thing Joe says is: I'm excited about the contest.
Now don't forget, you always say: I am "excited" about something.
Never say: I am "exciting" about something.
That's right.
You are excited.
But things are exciting.
I am excited about school.
But school is exciting.
And I'm excited about reviewing key words.
Well, that is exciting.
Here's your first key word.
think.
think.
Please be quiet. I am thinking.
pet.
pet.
I have a new pet. It is a dog.
nature.
nature.
We can enjoy nature outside.
choice.
choice.
That restaurant is a good choice.
prize.
prize.
The prize is a car. Maybe I can win it!
Way to go, friends.
Keep practicing your key words at home.
We will be rightback.
