Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
I hope you are excited for today's show because it will be a great one.
My name is Katie.
And I know I am excited to be here.
Today's topic is SPORTS.
We've been talking about sports for two days now.
But we have a new lesson for you.
The title is Community Parks.
Community Parks.
Now do you see many people at the park, Nathan?
Well, when the weather is good, I see a lot of people.
But when the weather is bad, I see very few people at the park.
Hi, friends. My name is Nathan.
It's good to be with you here today.
Let's look at our Let's Begin for today.
Find it in your LTE magazine and listen while Katie reads it right now.
Let's begin!
Parks are important.
They provide safe environments for kids to play.
Playgrounds are fun.
There are swings and slides!
Communities can be active together at parks.
Many parks offer different programs.
Sometimes there is a fee to pay.
Sometimes there isn't.
Everyone can enjoy spending time at parks.
Well, these sports lessons are really fun.
Let's continue learning in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Today we are talking about community parks and why they are important.
Please help me welcome Ms. Patty Park!
Thanks for joining us today, Ms. Patty Park.
Thank you, Rob.
Let's talk about parks.
Why are parks important?
Parks provide communities with a place to be active.
True. And they give kids a safe environment to play in.
Yes. Parks have open spaces for kids to run and play.
Many parks also have playgrounds.
Yes. Kids love to play on the swings and slides!
I agree with Patty Park.
Parks are a great place for kids.
But parks are a really good thing for all people.
Just look at today's "Use it!" sentence.
Parks provide communities with a place to be active.
That's a hard one.
But here's the important part.
A provides B with C.
When you use "provide" as a verb, you will use "with" after it.
Your teacher will provide you with paper.
My boss provided us with food for lunch.
This sentence means that parks give people near them a place to exercise and
have fun outside.
Instead of using "give," Rob could say that parks provide kids with a safe
environment.
But let's look at that big key word.
environment.
environment.
This is the area around you.
So Rob means that parks give kids a safe place to be in.
The street is not a good environment for playing.
We also often use "environment" to talk about nature.
That's right, like: What kind of environment does this animal live in?
Does it live in hot areas or cold areas? Wet places or dry places?
We can also say that parks are also a fun environment because they have places
like playgrounds.
And what can you find at playgrounds?
Swings.
And that is a key word.
swing.
swing.
You have probably played on a swing before.
It is a hanging seat that you can move forward and back, up and down.
When I was little, my friends and I would get really high on a swing and jump
off.
We would see who could jump the farthest.
Isn't that dangerous, Nathan?
I think it's better to stay on the swing.
Well, we were just trying to have fun.
Well anyway, we have another key word that you find at the playground.
slide.
slide.
You can sit on a slide and ride it down to the ground.
When I was a kid, we would all go down the slide together.
Aren't you supposed to go down one at a time, Katie?
Well, it was more fun that way.
But I think we're out of time.
So let's find out more about the park in Conversation B.
(Music).
What are some other reasons why parks are important?
Parks help communities.
They have programs for kids and adults.
Can you give me some examples?
Some parks have pools that offer swimming lessons.
Other parks host sports events for kids and adults.
Do people have to pay for these programs?
Some programs have a fee, but some are free.
Great! Parks are important.
Everyone should enjoy them!
Our conversation says parks have programs.
And "program" is a great word to look at because it's a key word.
program.
program.
A program is planned times to do or learn new things.
When I was little, I was part of a soccer program that let kids like me play on
a team for the first time.
Were you ever part of a program, Katie?
Well, I remember a program in school when the police would come and teach us
once a week.
They would tell us about how to make good choices.
That's very cool.
So friends, have you been in any programs?
Patty Park gives some more examples of programs.
She says that some parks offer swimming lessons, and other parks host sports
events.
A swimming program and a sports program.
Now Rob wonders if you have to pay for the programs.
Patty says some programs have a fee, but some are free.
And I think we should look at that key word.
fee.
fee.
A fee is money you have to pay to do something.
You might have to pay to be in a program.
And you might also pay a fee to a doctor or a lawyer for their work.
I had to pay fees to my university for different things that they gave to
students.
But don't worry.
You don't have to pay us a fee.
Now there's more to learn in this week's Read It.
(Music).
Parks are important places.
Communities can come together and be active.
They can also enjoy a safe and fun environment.
Kids like to play on the playground.
It has swings and slides.
Parks have a lot of space.
They also offer many programs.
Parks with pools often offer swimming lessons.
Sports events are often held at parks, too.
Sometimes people need to pay a fee for these programs.
Sometimes they don't!
Now remember that parks are safe and fun for kids.
Why are they safe?
The Read it says parks have a lot of space.
When you hear "space" in this sentence, you should think of open areas, not just
of a big size.
Right.
Just like when we might ask, "Is there space?" we want to know if there is an
empty or open area, not how big a place is.
A place can be very big, but have little space to do anything in.
But parks should have a space for programs, like swimming programs or programs
for other sports.
Sports programs are often held at parks.
Now Nathan, what does it mean if something is held at a park?
Well, it does sound strange.
But this doesn't mean to hold the program in your hand.
It means a program is held where it happens.
And now I think it's time to review today's key words.
Here's your first key word.
environment.
environment.
School should be a safe environment.
swing.
swing.
Lisa loves playing on the swing.
slide.
slide.
There are three slides at the park.
program.
program.
Our school offers a job training program.
fee.
fee.
You must pay a fee before you enter.
Good job, friends.
Those are some great words to know.
But don't forget them while we take a short break.
We'll be rightback.
