Well hello, there.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Today we have part two of yesterday's lesson for you.
My name is Nathan.
And I hope that you are here to learn more about our topic.
Our topic again is SPORTS.
SPORTS.
And today's lesson and yesterday's lesson was The Park.
The Park.
Now Katie, do you live near a park?
Yes, I do, Nathan.
I live near a great park, where lots of people go to exercise.
I go to run or read when it's nice outside.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
And I'm excited for today's lesson.
So let's get ready for it.
If you have your LTE magazine, turn to today's Let's Begin.
Or you can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
The weather is nice today.
Susie wants to go to Riverside Park.
She asks Ken for ideas.
He suggests a picnic!
She could also feed the ducks in the pond.
But Susie wants to exercise.
She could play basketball, softball or Frisbee!
But she decides to go biking!
Well, this sounds like fun.
So let's go to Conversation A and learn some more.
(Music).
Hey, Ken, do you know Riverside Park very well?
Yes. I go there a lot. Why?
The weather is nice today.
I want to go to a park, and a lot of people like Riverside Park.
It is a nice park!
You can have a picnic there.
Or you can feed the ducks in the pond.
Hmm. I want to get some exercise.
Then play sports.
Yesterday Ken and Megan were talking about Riverside Park.
Today Susie asks him about the same park in Conversation A.
She asks, "Do you know Riverside Park very well?" If you know something well,
you know a lot about it or are familiar with it.
So you can be familiar with a place, like a park.
I could say that I know Texas well because that's where I am from.
What else can you know well, Nathan?
Hmm. Well, we often talk about knowing people well.
When you start a job, you probably feel like you don't know many people well.
Another example is music.
You can say: I know that song really well.
It's one of my favorites.
So are you going to sing it for us?
Well, no.
I... I was... I was just making an example.
Uh, Ken knows the park well because he goes there a lot.
He tells Susie that she can have a picnic there.
Would you like to go on a picnic?
What's a picnic?
Well, it's a key word.
picnic.
picnic.
A picnic is a meal that you eat outside.
So a park is a great place to have a picnic.
But only plan a picnic when there's nice weather.
You don't want your food to get wet in the rain or blow away in the wind.
Another good thing to do at the park when the weather is nice is to feed the
ducks.
But if your park doesn't have a pond, it probably doesn't have ducks, either.
Now let's talk about that key word now.
pond.
pond.
A pond is a small area of water.
That's right. Some parks have a pond where ducks or fish live.
If you live in the country, there might be ponds near your house.
Just remember that a pond can't be very big.
It is just a small area of water.
Yes. A bigger area of water would be called a lake.
At the end of Conversation A, Ken tells Susie she should play sports for
exercise.
What kinds of sports?
Let's see in Conversation B.
(Music).
What sports do people play at Riverside Park?
They play all kinds of sports!
I play basketball there.
What other sports could I play?
Well, you could play softball or soccer.
But you need a lot of people to play those sports.
Yes, they are team sports.
Ask your friends to play!
My friends can't play today.
Wow, so Susie has a lot of choices of sports to play at the park.
Ken says that people at Riverside Park play all kinds of sports.
That's a common way of saying that they play many sports.
I would use the phrase "all kinds" like this:
I watch all kinds of movies.
Some are funny; some are sad; some are scary.
You could also say that you've been to all kinds of countries.
That doesn't mean that you have been to every country, but you have been to many
different ones.
Now one... sport people play at the park is basketball, which is a key word.
basketball.
basketball.
You know that we like to show you our key words here at Let's Talk in English,
so...
This is a basketball.
But you also play basketball with a basketball.
You have to throw this ball through a hoop.
But we don't have a hoop.
So I can be the hoop.
Here, Katie.
Oh. You... Oh. OK, we will try this.
You can do it!
Thank you!
Oh. Very good.
That's two points, Katie.
OK. Great! Thank you. That was fun.
So we do need to teach one more key word that is also a sport.
It's softball.
softball.
softball.
Now softball is a lot like baseball.
But the ball that is used is bigger than a baseball.
This one is a baseball.
And this is a softball.
Do you see the difference?
What else is different about softball, Nathan?
Well, softball is played on a smaller field.
And did you know that softball started as a sport that was played inside?
Really? No, I... I didn't know that.
We always play softball outside today.
So Ken has some good exercise ideas for Susie, but they're all team sports.
Susie's friends can't play today.
But maybe Ken has some more ideas for Susie in Conversation C.
So we should go there now and find out.
(Music).
If you meet someone at the park, you can play Frisbee.
I could. Frisbee sounds fun.
You can also go running.
No thanks. I don't like running anymore.
What about biking?
I do love biking!
Megan bought a bicycle today.
Ask her to go with you.
Great idea! I will ask her!
And maybe I'll come, too!
Ken has many more ideas of things to do at the park in Conversation C.
His first idea is to play Frisbee.
That's always fun.
But it's kind of a funny word, too.
A funny key word.
Let's look at it together.
Frisbee.
Frisbee.
Uh, Katie do we have a Frisbee here?
Actually, of course I have a Frisbee.
You all know what you do with a Frisbee, don't you?
You throw it.
Ready?
And Frisbees are great for catching, too, because they often come down slowly.
But you need two people to play with a Frisbee.
That's why Ken uses our "Use it!" sentence for today.
If you meet someone at the park, you can play Frisbee.
If you do something, you can do something else.
Wait, Nathan, you don't have to have two people to play Frisbee.
Well, I guess not.
But it wouldn't be very fun to throw it to yourself.
But if you have a dog, you can play Frisbee with a dog.
It will run to catch the Frisbee and bring it back to you.
Oh. Yeah. Well, you're right.
And you used the "Use it!" sentence, too.
OK, that's all of our time for Conversation C.
But we still need to practice today's key words.
Here is your first key word.
picnic.
picnic.
Eric bought fruit for the picnic.
pond.
pond.
There is a lot of water in that pond.
basketball.
basketball.
Jeremy Lin plays basketball.
softball.
softball.
Jessie plays softball every week.
Frisbee.
Frisbee.
Joe plays Frisbee with his friends.
Good job, friends.
I hope that you enjoyed today's lesson on parks.
Maybe you should go to one and throw a Frisbee with your friends.
But don't leave yet.
We will be right back.
Catch! Justkidding!
