Hello, friends.
Welcome to a new week here on Let's Talk in English.
I hope you're ready to learn a lot today.
My name is Katie.
And I'm very excited to be here.
We have a new topic this week.
And our top is SCHOOL.
Everyone goes to school.
And the title of today's lesson is Graduations.
Graduations.
Did you graduate high school, Nathan?
Yes, I graduated high school.
And I'm working here professionally.
So yes, I graduated from high school.
Now when you graduate, it means you finished that part of school.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
It's good to be with you today.
Let's read Let's Begin today.
Katie will read it for us.
Let's begin!
Rob's sister graduated from high school on Saturday.
She is a lovely girl.
Ken asks Rob some questions about the graduation.
Did anyone speak at the graduation?
Yes, Rob's sister did.
She has the best grades in her class!
Did Rob buy his sister a graduation gift?
Yes, he did!
OK, let's get started and go to Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Rob.
Did you have a good weekend?
My weekend was great!
My little sister graduated from high school on Saturday!
That's great! Good for her!
Yes. I'm so proud of my sister.
She is very smart.
Did you buy her a graduation gift?
Yes, I got her a watch.
That's a nice graduation gift!
Hey, everyone. It's Monday.
Did you have a good weekend?
I hope so.
That's what Ken asks Rob.
And it's our "Use it!" sentence for this week.
Did you have a good something?
Oh yeah, Katie, you went to see a movie last night, right?
Did you have a good time?
I did. It was fun to go to a movie and watch it with friends.
And that's a great example of this sentence.
And did you have a good rest last night, Nathan?
You said you were too tired to go with us.
Yes. I really needed some rest.
OK, now Rob says he had a great weekend because his little sister graduated from
high school.
His little sister...
Is she really short, Katie?
Well, I don't know Rob's sister.
But "little" just means that she's younger than he is, not that she's too small.
You have a little sister, don't you?
Oh, well yes.
And a little brother, too.
Neither of them have graduated from high school yet, though.
Maybe when they do, I'll need to buy them graduation gifts, like Rob.
Well, that would be really nice of you.
But let's talk about that key word.
gift.
gift.
That's something you give to someone, maybe for their birthday or graduation.
Rob's gift to his sister was a watch.
But you can give gifts anytime you want.
If you just find something that you think your friend would like, you could get
it for them.
And we have a gift for you.
It's time to go to Conversation B right now.
(Music).
Here's a picture from her graduation.
Nice. She looks very happy.
So one of her school colors is red?
Yes, her school colors are red and yellow.
And here's her senior picture.
Class of 2013!
I feel old.
Me, too!
That's a great picture.
I know. My sister is a lovely girl.
Aww! So cute! So how... Oh! Sorry.
Katie was showing me a picture of her cat.
Uh, just like Rob showed Ken a picture from his sister's graduation.
Were you happy at your high school graduation, Katie?
Actually, I was.
I was really excited to go to college.
It was very exciting.
Weren't you happy at your graduation, Nathan?
Well, I was very happy, but a little bit sad, too.
I had to say goodbye to all my friends.
So friends, how did you feel at your graduation?
Nathan, I'm confused about something.
Why does Ken ask if one of Rob's sister's school colors is red?
Oh, good question.
Well, almost all schools in the USA have special colors that belong to their
school.
So Rob's sister used the color red, or that was one of the colors that they
used.
My high school used blue and white.
And we all wore blue at our graduation.
I think Rob's sister probably wore red.
So her school colors are red and yellow.
Do you think she went to school at McDonald's?
Well, I don't know where she went to school.
But we do know that she's in the class of 2013.
That means she finished school this year.
But let's look at this key word.
class.
class.
A class is a group of people at one school that study together.
Rob's sister is in the senior class.
But you can also say "math class" or "science class." A math class is all the
people who study math together at one school.
And all of you are in our English class today.
And you're such a lovely class, too.
Oh, maybe we should talk about that word because it's a key word, too.
lovely.
lovely.
It means beautiful or wonderful.
But when I say that you're a lovely class, I mean both.
You are beautiful and wonderful.
Rob is talking about the picture.
So he probably means that his sister is beautiful.
When I say, "Those are lovely flowers," I mean they are beautiful.
But when I say, "That's a lovely idea," I mean that it is wonderful.
Well, we're having such a lovely time.
Why don't we continue?
It's time for conversation C.
(Music).
How big is your sister's high school?
It's very big.
More than 500 students graduated on Saturday.
Did many students speak at graduation?
Yes, they did.
My sister was one of them!
Her grades are the best in her class!
Wow, you are right.
Your sister is smart!
Yes, she really is!
Rob's sister had over 500 students in her graduating class.
That's a lot of people.
But my graduating class was actually a lot bigger.
I think we had about 800 people.
Maybe even more.
Really? I had about 80 people in my class.
I can't imagine having 800!
I agree with Rob.
His sister's school is very big.
Well, I guess that my class was super big.
Now Ken asks, "Did many students speak at graduation?" Let's look at this key
word right now.
speak.
speak.
Speak means to say something.
But Ken is asking if many students talk to the crowd during the graduation.
Right. I think two or three students spoke at my graduation.
Spoke, S-P-O-K-E, is the past tense of "speak." Speak and spoke.
Yes, that's right.
And we know... we know...
Oh, sorry.
I thought... I thought I heard someone speaking.
Anyway, we know that Rob's sister spoke at her graduation.
But how do we know that, Nathan?
Well, Rob says that she was one of them.
She was one of the students that spoke at the graduation.
Why?
Because her grades are the best in her class.
She must be a very good student.
Just like all of you.
You are great students.
But let's look at this next key word.
grade.
grade.
Your grade tells you how well you're doing in school.
And it's usually a number.
You get grades on tests and papers.
But you also get grades for the whole class, too.
And when you finish high school or college, all of your grades are put together
into one number.
Rob's sister had the highest number in her class.
And when you get the best grades in your class, you often are asked to speak at
your graduation when you're in the United States.
Did you speak at your high school graduation?
No. I did not have the highest grades in my class.
Uh, who... who spoke at your graduation, Katie?
Well actually, the president of my college spoke at my college graduation.
And sometimes at graduations, important people come in to talk and give a
speech.
They are called speakers.
Even, like the president of the United States, speaks at some colleges that are
very big.
OK, now I think it's time to review today's key words.
Here is your first key word.
gift.
gift.
This book is a gift for my mom.
class.
class.
My mom was in the class of 1982.
lovely.
lovely.
Erin is beautiful.
What a lovely girl!
speak.
speak.
Who will speak at the meeting tomorrow?
grade.
grade.
Bob gets good grades in English.
OK friends, keep practicing your key words with a friend, and you will get good
grades in English, too.
But now it's time for a short break.
We'll be rightback.
