Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
Now this is the first lesson in June, a new month with new lessons.
My name is Nathan, and I'm very glad to see you today.
Now today we have a new topic for you.
It is LIFE.
And the title of today's lesson is Clothes, Clothes, Clothes.
That's a lot of clothes.
Clothes, Clothes, Clothes.
Katie, do you like shopping for clothes?
I do.
I love shopping and finding cute clothes to wear.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Katie.
I hope you are excited for this month.
So let's get ready for today's lesson.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin!
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Ken is going to the mall.
The weather is changing.
He needs new shorts and T-shirts for summer.
The mall is having a sale.
Summer clothes are really cheap.
Susie can go with Ken.
But she doesn't need any shorts and T-shirts.
Why not?
She can't wear those clothes to the office!
Well, it sounds like this will be an interesting lesson.
Let's find out more in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hey, Ken.
What are you doing for lunch today?
We can go to Rudy's Restaurant.
I can't, Susie.
I'm going to the mall now.
Oh, OK.
Why are you going to the mall?
I need clothes.
The weather is changing.
I don't have any good shorts.
I see.
You need new summer clothes!
Yes, I do.
Ken is going to the mall.
That sounds like fun.
The mall is a large building that has lots of stores inside.
It sometimes has restaurants, too.
Do you like to go to the mall, Katie?
Well, usually yes.
I can do lots of shopping at the mall.
And when I get hungry, I can eat, too.
It's fun to see friends at the mall.
That's right.
The mall is a fun place to see your friends.
Well, in our conversation, Ken says he needs clothes.
Now Katie, why does he need clothes?
Well, Ken needs clothes because the weather is changing.
And that's our first key word for today.
change.
change.
If something changes, it becomes something different.
So if the weather changes, it goes from hot to cold, and maybe back to hot
again.
That's right.
One day it can be hot, and then it can be cold.
Or one day the weather could be very rainy, and the next day very windy.
The weather changes.
But lots of things can change.
You can change things.
We have said before: you can change your plans.
You decide to do something different than before.
And you can change your clothes.
You can put on new clothes every day.
OK. Then Ken says he doesn't have any good shorts.
Did I just use another key word, Nathan?
Uh, oh, I... I think you did.
Let's look at it together.
The word is...
shorts.
shorts.
Shorts are clothes that you wear over your legs.
They are shorter than pants and usually go to your knees.
You usually want to wear shorts during the summer when it is hot outside.
But you don't want to wear shorts in the winter.
Then your legs would be pretty cold.
Now Susie says Ken needs some new summer clothes.
If we say clothes are for the summer, they are for hot weather.
Summer clothes are shorts, T-shirts, dresses and sandals.
Right.
But winter clothes are heavy coats, hats, gloves and scarves.
Maybe boots, too.
Now Katie, do you like to wear summer clothes or winter clothes more?
Well, I think I like to wear winter clothes more.
I think that coats and scarves are really cute.
So that's why I like to wear them.
What about you, Nathan?
Well, it's a good question.
I think I kind of like winter clothes, too.
Well, friends, let's find out more about Ken and Susie in Conversation B.
Why are you going to the mall today?
There is a big summer sale at the mall.
And today is the last day.
Are all the stores having a sale?
No. But many stores are.
Shorts and T-shirts are really cheap now!
Shorts and T-shirts are great for hot weather.
And they're comfortable, too.
In Conversation B, Susie asks Ken, "Why are you going to the mall today?" How
does Ken answer, Nathan?
Well, he says he is going because there is a big summer sale at the mall.
Today is the last day of the sale.
That's right.
There is a big summer sale.
Now if a store is having a sale, that means it is selling things for a lower
price.
It is good to shop when there are sales in the stores because you do not spend
too much money.
Right.
And if one thing is cheaper because of the sale, we might say it is on sale.
Now, then Ken says that many stores are having sales.
He says shorts and T-shirts are really cheap now.
Hey, Nathan, you just used both of our key words.
Oh.
We should probably look at them.
The next key word is...
T-shirt.
T-shirt.
A T-shirt is a type of clothing that covers the upper part of your body.
It has short sleeves and no collar.
Mmm.
T-shirts are not good to wear in the winter because they do not keep you warm.
They're also good to exercise in because they are not usually that nice of
clothes.
The next key word Ken uses is...
cheap.
cheap.
If something is cheap, it is not expensive.
Clothes are sometimes cheap, especially when they are on sale.
Right.
But nice things or maybe big things like cars or computers are not cheap.
They are expensive.
Do you like to buy cheap things, Katie?
Well, I really like saving money.
But lots of times when I buy cheap things, they don't last very long.
They break or they fall apart.
So I do not always buy cheap things.
Sometimes it is good to buy more expensive things because then they last longer.
I agree.
Cheap things are not always very good.
If you're going to buy cheap things, you want to know that they will still last
for a while.
Now then Ken says shorts and T-shirts are comfortable.
That means they are nice to wear.
You like to wear them because they feel good.
I like to wear T-shirts, especially on the weekends or when I am exercising.
But when I go to work, I can't wear a T-shirt because it does not look good.
Nathan, do you like to wear T-shirts or nice clothes?
Hmm, well, it's probably a little bit more comfortable to wear T-shirts.
But nice clothes are good sometimes too.
That's true.
OK.
Let's find out what else Ken needs to buy in Conversation C.
(Music).
Are any shoe stores having sales?
Yes, they are.
Why?
I need sandals.
Come with me to the mall.
Buy some shoes.
Maybe you can buy some shorts and T-shirts, too.
OK.
I can look at shoes.
But I don't want any shorts and T-shirts.
Why not?
We can't wear shorts and T-shirts at the office!
We learn in Conversation C that Susie needs sandals.
What are sandals, Katie?
Well, sandals are a very light shoe that you wear when it is hot outside.
They usually have a flat bottom and are held together by a strap on the top.
That's right.
We usually wear sandals during the summer.
Susie says she can look at shoes at the mall.
But she doesn't want any shorts or T-shirts.
Why doesn't she want to buy any, Katie?
Well, because she can't wear shorts and T-shirts to work.
I can't, either.
OK. Let's look at the key word in this sentence.
wear.
wear.
If you wear something like clothes, you have it on your body.
We wear clothes, and we wear shoes.
We wear scarves, coats, and hats, too.
What else can we wear, Katie?
Oh, well, we can wear jewelry.
I wear a necklace on my neck.
And I wear earrings in my ears.
And now if you want to use this word, you can ask someone:
What are you wearing to the party?
Right.
Susie uses our "Use it!" sentence as well.
She says she can't wear shorts and T-shirts at the office.
She can't wear shorts and T-shirts at work because they do not look nice.
Why don't you try to use that kind of sentence today.
And now it's time to review today's key words.
Here is your first one.
change.
change.
The restaurant changed its menu.
shorts.
shorts.
Today is hot. Put on some shorts.
T-shirt.
T-shirt.
My T-shirt has my school's name on it.
cheap.
cheap.
What a cheap dinner! It is only $3.
wear.
wear.
What are you wearing to the wedding?
Good job, friends.
Keep saying your key words at home and practice with a friend.
But now let's take a shortbreak.
