Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
You're in the right place.
We have fun together learning every day.
My name is Nathan, one of your LTE TV teachers.
Thanks for having us in your home.
That's our topic again today.
HOME.
And our new lesson today is called Solving Problems With Neighbors.
Solving Problems With Neighbors.
Does that sound like a helpful lesson, Katie?
Well, I don't have a lot of problems with my neighbors.
But I might learn something that is useful today.
My name is Katie.
Let's look at what we will learn today in Let's Begin.
You can read along with Nathan from your magazine.
Let's begin!
Leo Law talks to Rob about solving problems with noisy neighbors.
The first step is to have a polite conversation.
Tell them about the noise and ask them to stop.
If the neighbor gets very angry, do not contact them again.
Let your landlord do it.
But don't make noise to bother them.
That is childish.
That sounds like some good advice.
Let's see what Rob's guest has to say in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, and welcome to Let's Talk!
Have you ever had problems with your neighbors?
Well, how did you handle that?
Our guest today is here to help us talk about noisy neighbors.
Please help me welcome Mr. Leo Law.
Welcome to our program, Leo.
Thank you, Rob.
Let's talk about noisy neighbors.
They are a common problem when people live close together.
But it's not an easy problem to solve.
No. But the first step is to have a polite conversation with the neighbor.
What should you say?
Say, "I'm not sure you're aware..." and tell them about the noise.
Then ask them if you make noise that bothers them.
Leo Law is here to talk about noisy neighbors.
He says that it's a common problem.
Maybe you've had this problem before.
You might agree with Rob when he says, "But it's not an easy problem to solve."
There's a key word here that we need to talk about today.
solve.
solve.
"Solve" means to fix or find an answer.
Yes. So Rob is talking about solving a problem.
There are many kinds of problems you can solve.
You might solve math problems for your homework.
That's right.
We often call math questions "math problems." Katie, did they solve the problem
with your elevator at the apartment building?
Yes, they did.
I'm so glad it's fixed now.
Now Leo gives us the first step to solving neighbor problems.
Oh, but I guess we need to talk about another key word here.
Yes, we do.
Our next key word is: step.
step.
When Leo says the first step to solve the problem, he means the first thing that
you should do.
It's also like the first part of problem solving.
Katie, what is your first step when you leave work to go home?
Well, my first step is walking to the MRT station.
That's the first thing I do.
Now let's go back to the neighbor problem.
Leo says the first step is to have a polite conversation.
Polite? What's that?
Well, it's another key word today.
polite.
polite.
Polite means being kind, not rude.
We should always try to be polite.
That's very true, Nathan.
Well, Leo says we should start by saying: I'm not sure you're aware about the
noise.
Maybe you don't know that I can hear you.
That would be very polite.
And then you could ask them if they hear you, too.
Oh, thank you so much, Katie.
Well, you're so welcome.
OK, now let's hear Leo's other ideas in Conversation B.
What if your neighbor gets really angry when you talk about the problem?
Then don't contact them again.
Tell your landlord.
Let him talk to them.
Can you make noise to bother them because they are bothering you?
No, that is not a good idea.
That is childish and won't solve anything.
So what if they still make noise after the landlord talks to them?
Then you call the police.
Conversation B starts with a Use It sentence.
What if your neighbor gets really angry when you talk about the problem?
What if something happens when you do something?
Katie, what if you can't buy a plane ticket when you want to visit your family?
Oh, that would be sad.
But maybe I could take a boat.
Now Leo is telling us what to do if our neighbors get angry.
He says, "Don't contact them again." Now you may not know this key word.
contact.
contact.
If you contact someone, you give them some kind of message.
You might use your cellphone, email or something else to contact them.
I like to contact my good friends in the U.S. with Skype or Facebook.
Those are great ways to contact people.
Now Leo says you should ask your landlord to contact your neighbor.
Your landlord is the person that owns your house or apartment.
It is not a good idea to make noise yourself, though.
It might feel good, but it's childish.
Can you guess what that key word means?
Let's look at it.
childish.
childish.
If you are childish, this means that you act like a child, but not in a good
way.
Yes. There are many good things about children.
But sometimes they get mad and try to cause trouble.
Adults should not be like that.
That's right.
Call the police if that's a big problem.
Now let's look at what all we've learned today in our Read It.
When people live close together, noisy neighbors can be a problem.
The first step to solve the problem is talking to the neighbor.
Be polite when you explain the problem.
If they get angry, do not contact them again.
Let your landlord talk to them.
But don't make noise to bother them just because they bother you.
That is childish and will not solve the problem.
If you've tried everything and the neighbor still makes noise, call the police.
Here's a short sentence from Read It that is good for practice.
Be polite when you explain the problem.
Be something when you do something.
Like this: Be friendly when you meet new people.
That's always a good idea.
You should also be clear when you teach others.
Also, be a good listener when your teacher is talking.
Teachers and students both have jobs to do.
So we'll do our job, and you do yours.
There's another useful pattern to look at here:
But don't make noise to bother them just because they bother you.
That is a useful one, Nathan.
Don't do something just because something happened.
Here the Read It is saying don't make noise just because someone made you mad.
Yeah. You can also say: Don't stop doing your homework just because you don't
feel like doing it.
Or don't steal music online just because lots of people do it.
That doesn't mean it's right.
OK, friends, it's time to practice our key words now.
Here's the first one.
solve.
solve.
Please solve this problem. I can't.
step.
step.
These directions have five steps.
polite.
polite.
Al always says, "Thank you." He is polite.
contact.
contact.
Contact me by phone this afternoon.
childish.
childish.
Don't get mad at Mom. That's childish.
Very good work on your key words.
Now let's take abreak.
