Hi, friends, welcome to LTE TV.
It's time for a new week here on Let's Talk in English.
My name is Nathan.
I hope you are ready for today's lesson.
The topic of today's lesson is SPORTS.
Sports are good for you.
The title of our lesson is Tennis or Badminton?
Tennis or Badminton?
Have you ever played tennis or badminton, Katie?
Well, I have played tennis.
It is a fun sport to play.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
If you like sports, we have a great show for you today.
So now let's get ready for today's lesson.
Find your Let's Begin reading, and you can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's begin!
Megan will try a new sport!
She is reading about badminton and tennis.
Both sports use a racket.
Both birdies and tennis balls move fast.
Both sports have a net.
Don't hit the ball or birdie into the net.
Then you don't get a point!
Which sport will Megan try?
Well, this sounds great.
Let's move on to Conversation A now.
What are you doing, Megan?
I'm reading about sports.
Then I can try a new one!
Which one?
I don't know.
I may try badminton or tennis.
But I can't decide.
Why not?
Well, which one is better for me?
What does the Internet say about the two sports?
Maybe you can find some information.
Well, this sounds exciting.
In our conversation, we find out that Megan wants to try a new sport.
How great!
Katie, which sport does Megan want to try?
Well, she wants to try either tennis or badminton.
Wow, that sounds fun.
Yeah, you're right.
And you used both key words there.
Let's look at the first one.
badminton.
badminton.
Badminton is a sport played on a small court.
Two or four people can play badminton at the same time.
When you play badminton, you hit a small object over a tall net.
The object is called a birdie.
And you use a racket to hit the birdie.
We'll talk about the word "racket" in Conversation B.
If you hit the birdie into the net, you don't get a point.
But the person you are playing does get a point.
Badminton is a popular sport.
Lots of people play it.
You can play badminton inside or outside.
But Megan can try another sport, too.
What does she try, Nathan?
Well, Megan wants to try tennis.
It's another key word today.
tennis.
tennis.
So let's look at this word together.
Tennis is another game that can be played by either two or four people.
It is played on a tennis court that has two sides.
And there is a net in the middle.
You use a racket to hit the ball, just like in badminton.
Now a tennis ball is a little smaller than a baseball.
And it is bright yellow.
And tennis balls are not heavy.
Right. So tennis is a fun sport.
You usually play tennis outside.
And you have to keep the ball inside the lines on a tennis court.
Or if you hit the ball into the net, again, you don't get a point.
Have you played tennis before, Katie?
You said you did, right?
Well, yes. I used to be on a tennis team.
I played tennis for a very long time.
It is a fun sport.
Nathan, have you ever played?
I have played a little bit of tennis, but not much, mostly for school.
OK. Well, Megan says she can't decide which sport she will try.
So I guess we will find out later.
Let's go to Conversation B and see what Megan decides.
Well, you play both tennis and badminton on a court.
I know. And you use a racket in both sports.
Right. You hit a ball in tennis.
But you hit a birdie in badminton.
Both the ball and birdie can move fast!
Yes. Can I hit them? I wonder.
You can try!
In Conversation B, Susie and Megan talk about things that are the same in tennis
and badminton.
They also talk about things that are different.
In these sports, many things are the same.
But a lot of things are different, too.
When you look for things that are the same or different between two things, you
are comparing them.
You can compare lots of things.
That's right.
Megan says that you play both tennis and badminton on a court.
And then Susie says you use a racket in both sports.
And that's a key word.
Let's look at it.
racket.
racquet.
Now a racket is something that you use to hit a ball in some sports.
It has a long handle, and you put your hand on the handle.
The top of the racket looks like a circle with a net in the middle.
This is where you hit the ball or the birdie.
Right. But tennis rackets and badminton rackets are different.
Yes. I have a tennis racket.
And it's big and heavy.
And I have a badminton racket.
And it's smaller and not very heavy.
You can spell "racket" two different ways.
You can spell it R-A-C-K-E-T or R-A-C-Q-U-E-T.
You can use both.
Then Megan says you hit a birdie in badminton.
Now a birdie is a small thing that you hit.
And it looks like a triangle.
Susie says both the ball and the birdie move fast.
Let's look at this key word.
move.
move.
If something moves fast, it goes quickly or it hurries.
People can move fast.
Things can move fast.
And animals can move fast.
What else can move fast, Katie?
Oh, I know.
Cars can move fast.
They can move really fast.
Well, let's look at our Use It sentence.
Both of the ball and the birdie can move fast.
Both things can do something.
Let's use it.
Both Katie and I can teach English.
Both cats and dogs can make noise.
Both the boy and the girl can play a game.
Or both the teacher and students can study English together.
OK, good job, friends.
I hope you learned a lot about tennis and badminton.
They are very fun sports.
But now we can all go to Conversation C.
I can try.
But I'm not very good with a racket.
You can hit the ball or birdie sometimes.
I'm sure.
I hope so!
But don't hit the ball or birdie into the net.
Then you don't get a point.
That's right.
So which sport will you try?
I can try badminton.
Maybe the birdie doesn't move too fast!
Let's look at Megan's second sentence.
She says, "I'm not very good with a racket." We can say we are not very good
with something.
Let's try it.
Well, I am not very good with numbers.
I can't do math.
Or, Tom is not very good with animals.
Animals don't like him.
Good.
Susie says, "Don't hit the ball or the birdie into the net." And there is a key
word.
net.
net.
In tennis and badminton, the net is in the middle of the court.
It is long.
And it's used to block the ball if you hit it into the net.
That's right.
If you hit the ball or birdie into the net, you don't get a point because the
ball does not go to the other side.
But the person you're playing does get a point.
That's right.
So don't hit the ball into the net.
But we can use nets for other things, too.
We usually use nets to catch things.
That's right, Nathan.
We do use nets to catch things so they do not get away.
Now if you go fishing, you might catch a fish in your net.
A net does not let the fish out.
That's right, too.
Nets are good for catching things.
Then Susie says you don't get a point... you don't get a point if you hit the
ball into the net.
And when you play tennis and badminton, you play for points.
In tennis, you have to win four points to win one game.
You play a lot of games in tennis.
And in badminton, you have to win 21 points to win the game.
Wow! I would get very tired.
Now, have you played badminton, Nathan?
Well, yes.
When I was a kid, I played it a lot, actually.
Not as much anymore.
Well, we find out in the conversation that Megan wants to try badminton.
Sounds exciting.
That is exciting.
Badminton is a good sport to try.
I want to try it.
But right now it's time to practice our key words.
Please say them with us.
badminton.
badminton.
I play badminton in the summer.
tennis. tennis.
Tennis is Kim's favorite sport.
racket.
racquet.
Sam hit the ball with the tennis racket.
move.
move.
Tennis balls can move fast.
net.
net.
A tennis court has a net.
Great job, friends.
Keep practicing those key words.
And don't go away because we'll be rightback.
