Welcome, friends.
It's time for Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
And I'm excited for today's lesson.
We're starting a new topic today - TECHNOLOGY.
Sounds interesting.
Today's lesson is called Be Smart on Facebook.
Be Smart on Facebook.
Now that's a good idea. Isn't it, Nathan?
Sure it is.
Being smart on the Internet is always important.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
It's time to get ready for the lesson today.
Find today's Let's Begin reading in your Let's Talk in English magazine.
And read along with Katie right now.
Let's begin!
Some of Joe's Facebook friends post too many updates.
Ken says, "Some of mine do, too." Maybe his friend eats a sandwich.
Then he puts the news on Facebook.
Don't share everything on Facebook.
It's not a diary!
Some of Joe's friends also post bad things on Facebook.
He can report or block them.
Let's learn more in Conversation A.
Hey, Joe. Are you working?
No. I'm looking on Facebook.
How many Facebook friends do you have?
Too many, Ken.
Why do you say that?
Some of my friends post too many Facebook updates.
Some of mine do, too.
They post a lot of boring updates.
I know. I don't like that.
In Conversation A, we see Joe and Ken.
Joe says he's looking on Facebook.
Now we all know Facebook.
It's a website where you can find and talk to your friends.
Do you use Facebook a lot, Nathan?
Hmm, yes. It's a good way to keep in touch with friends in different countries.
Now when we talk about using Facebook, we can say we are looking "on" Facebook
or "at" Facebook.
You can say it either way.
On Facebook you have friends.
People have a lot of friends on Facebook.
Ken says his friends post a lot of updates.
But he doesn't use the word "his." He says "mine." That's our first key word.
mine.
mine.
I say something is mine when I'm talking about anything that I own.
Right. These clothes are mine, and these shoes are mine.
That's right. This clipboard is mine.
Anything that belongs to me is mine.
And we can look at it a different way, too.
You can say, "This is my clipboard," or "This clipboard is mine," like Katie
said.
That's right, both "my" and "mine" mean the same.
But we put them in different parts of the sentence.
"Mine" goes at the end of the sentence.
And "my" goes before the noun.
In our conversation, Joe says, "Some of my friends post too many status
updates." He says "my" here, not "mine".
When we're talking about Facebook, we say that we post updates.
When you post something, it means you put something on the Internet.
A lot of people can see what you post.
If you post updates, you say what you are doing right then.
Now let's move on to Conversation B and learn something else there.
For example, someone eats a sandwich.
Or brushes their teeth.
And then he tells everyone on Facebook.
Yes. Some people post things like that many times a day!
I usually like my friends' updates.
But a person with too many updates bothers me.
Right. People can share their news and fun updates on Facebook.
But don't share everything.
Facebook is not a diary!
In Conversation B, Joe and Ken talk about how their friends like to post boring
updates.
I don't like that, either.
Do you, Katie?
No, I really don't.
I don't want to read what people are eating and doing all the time.
Ken says that if someone eats a sandwich or brushes their teeth, they put it on
Facebook.
And there's our first key word.
sandwich.
sandwich.
A sandwich is a type of food.
There are usually two pieces of bread.
And you can put anything like meat, vegetables and cheese in between the pieces
of bread.
There are many types of sandwiches you can eat.
I love turkey and cheese sandwiches.
Or I eat sandwiches with peanut butter.
Nathan, what is your favorite kind of sandwich?
Well, you know, I like Subway sandwiches.
Maybe you've had those before.
Now later, Joe says people can share their news on Facebook.
But Ken says not to share everything because Facebook isn't a diary.
And that's our next key word.
diary.
diary.
A diary is a book where people write their thoughts and what has happened during
their day.
Often people write all the small details of their day, so they don't forget what
happened.
Exactly. You can write anything in your diary.
People usually do not show each other their diaries because it is a book for
your own thoughts.
You can write in a diary anytime you want.
I sometimes keep a diary because I want to remember things that happened to me.
Now let's look at our Use It sentence now.
A person with too many updates bothers me.
Something bothers me.
If something bothers you, it annoys you or you don't like it.
Like: Mosquitoes bother me.
Or the rain bothers me.
OK, now let's go to Conversation C to learn a little bit more.
My friend just posted an update.
He used a lot of bad words.
That's terrible.
And it's rude.
You can report the person to Facebook.
I know.
Or I can just block the person.
True. Then you don't see their updates.
Why can't everyone have good Facebook manners?
Good question!
Now Joe tells Ken that his friend posted an update and used a lot of bad words.
Let's look at the phrase "bad words." Bad words are words that we should not say
to other people.
They are words that we shouldn't use when we talk to someone else.
Right.
Then Ken says that he can report the person to Facebook because he used bad
words.
Don't use bad words on Facebook.
Hey, Nathan, you just used a key word.
Let's look at it.
report.
report.
When you report something, it means you tell about something that happened to
someone else.
Right. If Joe reports his friend to Facebook, he will tell the people at
Facebook how his friend used bad words.
You can report other things, too.
If someone does something bad at work, you can report them to someone at work.
But you don't have to just report bad things.
You can also report an interesting event back to someone else, too.
If you see something funny on the street, you can report it back to your
friends.
Hmm, that's true, too.
Then Joe says he could just block the person.
Now let's look at that key word now.
block.
block.
You usually block people on the Internet.
If you block someone on Facebook, it means the person can't see things you post,
and you can't see what they post.
That's right. You block someone because you don't like what they post.
I block people because I do not want to see people post bad words on Facebook.
Yes, posting bad words on Facebook is bad manners.
And in our conversation, Joe asks why people can't have good manners.
Now good manners is when you do nice things like saying "please" or "thank you"
to people, or helping them when they need it.
But now I think we should go to the key words.
Let's do that.
And here's the first one.
mine.
mine.
This is not your book. It is mine.
sandwich.
sandwich.
Al is eating a ham and cheese sandwich.
diary.
diary.
Nancy writes in her diary every night.
report.
report.
Let's report the problem to the teacher.
block.
block.
Block this person. He posts bad things.
Great job, everyone.
Don't forget to practice and say key words at home.
We'll be right back in justa minute.
