Hi, everyone.
Thanks for coming to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
We're so glad you could come today.
We think you know something about our new topic today.
The topic is SCHOOL.
And today's lesson is called Joe's Big Test.
Joe's Big Test.
Have you ever taken a big test, Nathan?
Of course. I've taken a lot of big tests because I've been in school a lot.
Hi, everybody. My name is Nathan.
I think we all have taken some big tests, right?
Well, if we look at today's Let's Begin, I think we can learn more about Joe's
test.
Open up your LTE magazine and read with Katie.
Let's Begin.
Joe is very busy.
He is taking an online class.
He has a lot of homework.
And he has a test tomorrow.
But he also has a lot of work at the station.
He can't study.
There's no time!
But he can't fail.
Can Joe find time to study?
It sounds like Joe has a problem.
Let's see what he has to say in Conversation A.
Hi, Joe. Where are you going?
Hi, Susie. Sorry.
I can't stop now.
Wait. Are you OK?
Yes, I'm OK. But I'm very busy.
Why are you busy?
I have a big test tomorrow.
A test?
You're not a student.
Why do you have a test?
I am taking an online class.
Joe looks a little nervous today.
Your magazine says he's in a hurry.
"Hurry" is usually a verb.
But here it's a noun.
Of course, if someone is in a hurry, they are trying to do things very quickly.
Are you in a hurry, Nathan?
Me? No. I don't want to be in a hurry while I'm teaching English.
That would make it hard for the students.
But sometimes I am in a hurry when there are a lot of things I need to do.
When do you get in a hurry, Katie?
Well, if someone is waiting for me, I'm usually in a hurry to meet them.
But Joe tells Susie that he can't stop now because he's very busy.
Make sure you remember this key word.
busy.
busy.
When you are busy, you have a lot to do.
Joe is busy because he has work to do, and he needs to study.
Now sometimes I'm busy at work, too.
I'm glad that I don't have to worry about school right now.
Oh, me, too.
But sometimes I'm so busy that I have to work at home.
Maybe Joe is doing that now, too.
Joe says he is busy because he has a big test tomorrow.
And wow, this is another really important key word.
test.
test.
Sometimes at school you have to take tests.
Tests have questions that you have to answer by yourself.
Some questions have short answers and some have long answers.
Teachers give tests to see if you understand what they're teaching.
Tests are usually a big part of your grades, too.
And that's why Joe is nervous.
But Susie doesn't understand.
She asks why Joe has a test if he's not a student.
But Joe actually is a student.
He's taking an online class.
That's a class that you take on the Internet.
Have you taken an online class before, Nathan?
Yes. I took one online class when I was at university.
It was very different than going to class with a teacher or professor.
There was a lot more writing than other classes.
But I guess I did learn some things from it.
Well, whenever you take an online class, you stay at home.
That's why I do not like online classes.
Because I like to be around other teachers and students.
Nathan, did you like your online class?
Ooh, that's a good question.
I was very busy with work that summer, too.
So with that class, it made it even busier.
But to have a class by yourself is also not that fun.
I agree.
But how about we got to Conversation B now and learn more about Joe and his
test?
That's great, Joe.
What kind of class are you taking?
I'm taking a class for salesmen.
It can help with my job.
Is the class hard?
Well, I have a lot of homework.
Then you are busy!
Yes. And I am really busy with work, too.
So I can't study for my test!
Susie thinks it's good that Joe is taking a class.
But she asks, "What kind of class are you taking?" What kind of (blank) are you
(blanking)?
Have you ever said a sentence like that before?
Something like: What kind of apartment are you looking for?
Oh, here's a good one.
What kind of food are you eating?
It looks good.
Here's another.
What kind of music are you listening to?
That's another quite great question to ask someone.
Yeah, those are great examples.
Now Joe says that he's taking a class for salesmen because it can help him with
his job.
When Susie asks if the class is hard, he says that he has a lot of homework.
Well, that sounds like my online class.
But let's look at this key word.
homework.
homework.
This is classwork that you do at home.
Homework might be reading, writing or other things.
If you're in school, you'll have homework almost every day.
And you can name your homework after your classes.
Math homework, science homework, or English homework.
And it really can make you busy, like Susie says.
But Joe says he's busy with work, too.
That's why he can't study for his test.
Again, we have a great key word that you should know.
study.
study.
That's practicing things that you have learned.
How do you study, Katie?
Well, when I study, I usually go to a coffee shop.
And then I read what I need to learn many times.
That helps me remember it so that I can take a test.
Now when you study for a test, you try to remember information for the test.
Sometimes you might also have to remember how to do something for a test.
Now Nathan, how do you study?
Well, I just try to read important information many times.
I usually try to write down the important things my teacher says in class.
That gives me something to study.
So I can go home and look at what I wrote.
I can remember what the teacher says that way.
Now I wonder what Joe will do.
And I wonder how Joe studies.
He's very busy, but he should find some time to do it.
I hope that he does.
What are some other good ways to study?
What do you think?
Well, I think another good way to study is writing down what the teacher says.
Sometimes if you write things a lot, you can remember it better.
Or if you are trying to study for your English class, practice speaking your
English.
That will help you learn.
But now I think we need to move on to Conversation C.
But you must!
You can't fail your test, Joe.
I know!
Then study for the test . Find time!
I can't! There is no time!
I'm too busy every day.
You can ask Carol.
Maybe she can help.
That's a good idea.
Where is she?
I don't know.
But you can find her.
Thanks. And thank you for the advice.
Well, Susie knows that Joe really needs to study for his test.
"You can't fail your test, Joe," she says.
That isn't a nice word.
But it's a good key word to know.
fail.
fail.
If you fail at something, that means that you could not do what you try to do.
If you fail a test, it means that you got a very bad grade on it.
Sometimes failing a test stops you from passing a class.
Now if you don't pass a class, that means you might have to take it again.
You want to pass all of your classes.
You don't want to fail them.
Failing a class is very serious.
Other things can also fail, though.
If I said that I failed as a writer, it would mean that I could not do the job
very well.
That's right.
Now Joe knows that he can't fail.
So Susie tells him to find time to study.
Now the phrase "find time" sounds a little strange, doesn't it?
It does sound a little strange, I guess, Katie.
You can't really find more time to use, can you?
But you can plan when you would do something.
You should find time to practice English.
Find 10 minutes every day to practice English.
And that will make your English better.
You'll improve.
And you should always find time to relax every week.
I think it's also good to find time to exercise or pray.
And I always find time to read every day.
We can find time for these things if we look for it.
But Joe says he's too busy.
And then Susie has an idea.
Maybe Carol can help.
But she doesn't know where Carol is.
Joe thinks it's a good idea, and also thanks Susie for her advice.
That's a great way to say thank you to someone.
Thank you for something.
Like: Thank you for the food.
Or Katie, thank you for the help that you give me on the show.
Oh, you're welcome.
Thank you for the kind words, Nathan.
And I'm sure you'll say "thank you" for the key words because now it's time to
review... review them.
That's true.
Here's the first one.
busy.
busy.
Sara is busy today.
She is working.
test.
test.
The English test is next week.
homework.
homework.
I am doing my math homework.
study.
study.
I study English at home.
fail.
fail.
Don't fail your test!
All right. Good job, everyone.
I'm sure you didn't fail.
Oh, you said "thank you"?
Well, you're welcome.
And now don't go away.
We have more things to learn today.
So make sure that you come back after thisbreak.
