Oh, you got here just in time.
Let's Talk in English is starting.
So where are you watching or listening to us from?
Hi, my name is Nathan.
You can join LTE TV from around the world.
And today is our last day to talk about TRANSPORTATION.
Our lesson today is called Subways Around the World.
Katie, I think Rob has an interesting guest for us today.
I think so, too. It should be interesting.
Hello, everybody. My name is Katie.
We're going to learn a lot of cool information today.
So let's read the Let's Begin.
Nathan will read with you from your magazine right now.
Let's Begin.
Rob talks to a guest about subway systems around the world.
The London system is the oldest.
It began operation in 1863.
New York's system is one of the biggest.
Tokyo's is one of the busiest.
About 6.2 million passengers ride it each day.
The system in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the deepest.
One station is 105 meters underground!
I told you we have some cool information.
Let's learn more in Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, and welcome to Let's Talk!
Have you ever been on a subway?
Well, today we are going to talk about some of the best subway systems in the
world.
Please help me welcome my guest, Mr. Todd Transport.
Hello, Todd. Welcome to our program.
Thank you, Rob.
Let's talk about subways or mass transit systems.
What are some of the best ones in the world?
Well, one of them is London's system.
It's often called The Tube.
What's special about it?
It's the world's oldest.
It began operation in 1863.
What are some others?
The system in New York City is one of the world's biggest.
It has 468 stations!
We get to listen to Todd Transport today on Rob's show.
Rob wants to talk about mass transit systems.
That sounds a little hard.
But mass transit is just a way for a lot of people to travel in a city.
Now let's look at today's first key word.
system.
system.
Now this kind of system is all of the roads and trains or buses that travel
them.
They are all part of a system.
A mass... transit system.
There are many different systems: systems that let us keep in touch, systems
that let us learn, and many others.
This is a system that lets us go from one place to another in a city, like a
subway system or a bus system.
And Rob asks: What are some of the best ones in the world?
Todd says one of the best mass transit systems is in London.
The subway there is called The Tube.
Remember, subways in different places have different names.
The other interesting thing about The Tube is that it's the oldest subway
system.
Todd says that it began operation in 1863.
Well, we have some big key words today.
And this key word is: operation.
operation.
If something is in operation, it is working and being used.
If someone's car is broken, I might ask them later: Is your car in operation
now?
You might use this word when you buy a new phone.
When you start using it, you could say: My new phone is in operation.
But that's all the time we have.
Let's move on to Conversation B.
I've heard about the Tokyo Metro.
It can be very crowded!
It is . More than 6.2 million passengers ride it every day.
Each station in Tokyo has people pushers.
Really! They push people onto the train?
Yes, they do!
They do it so the train doors can close.
Tell us about another interesting system.
Well, the system in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the deepest in the world.
One station is 105 meters underground.
We hear about the Tokyo subway in Conversation B.
In English, it's called the metro.
That's a more common name for subways around the world.
Rob heard that it can be very crowded on the Tokyo Metro.
And I've heard that, too.
Tokyo is one of the world's biggest cities.
But I was surprised at what Todd tells us.
More than 6.2 million passengers ride it every day.
And here's another good key word.
passenger.
passenger.
A passenger is a person who is riding some kind of transportation.
Planes, trains, cars, boats and other things can have passengers on them.
And the subway is so crowded in Tokyo that people have the job of pushing people
onto the trains.
Yeah, that sounds crazy.
Well, Todd says that the system in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the deepest in
the world.
Do you know what it means by this key word?
Let's look at it.
deep.
deep.
The deepest subway system is the furthest into the ground.
No other system goes farther down.
Katie, I want to know where the deepest part of the ocean is.
I think that would be interesting to learn about, too.
Or to learn where the deepest city is.
Cities can be deep, too.
One of the stations in Saint Petersburg is 105 meters underground.
That's another key word for today.
meter.
meter.
A meter is a common way to say how long, deep or wide something is.
This stick is one meter long.
A meter is 100 centimeters.
So this station is 105 of those under the ground.
That's amazing!
OK, now we need to look at today's Read It.
There are some very interesting subway systems in the world.
The oldest system is in London.
It has been in operation since 1863.
New York's system is also old, and has more stations than any other.
The Tokyo metro is very crowded.
More than 6.2 million passengers ride it each day.
And at Tokyo stations, people pushers push people onto the trains!
The system in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the deepest in the world.
One station is 105 meters underground.
In today's Read It, we can see the New York subway system has more stations than
any other.
Uh, Katie, any... any other what?
Well, the sentence started by saying "the New York subway system." So we should
know that at the end of the sentence, it means any other system.
Oh. Good. OK.
Uh, let's make some other examples of this.
Uh, like this:
My family is more international than any other at my school.
Or this book is more difficult than any other that I've read.
And Let's Talk in English students are more awesome than any others, right?
Well, they will be if they practice their key words every day.
I think that we should do that together right now.
Here's your first key word.
system.
system.
Many cars use this system of roads.
operation.
operation.
The operation of this store is good.
passenger.
passenger.
A dozen passengers got on the bus.
deep.
deep.
This is the deepest part of the river.
meter.
meter.
John is more than two meters tall!
All right, friends, you guys are awesome.
I hope that you learned a lot.
Don't go away.
We will be rightback.
