Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
And you're watching LTE TV.
I hope you're excited for today.
We will continue with our topic AROUND TOWN.
And today is part two of our lesson called Stamps, Cards and Packages.
Stamps, Cards and Packages.
So are you excited to tell your friends more about the post office, Nathan?
Well, of course I am.
Learning about the post office is very important.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
And in our lesson today, you'll learn more about sending letters and packages.
So let's get ready for today with our Let's Begin reading.
You can find it in your LTE magazine, and read along with Katie right now.
Let's Begin!
Ken is sending his brother a gift.
He is getting ready to mail it.
Rob thinks he should wrap the gift in Bubble Wrap.
Then it won't break.
He should register the package, too.
Ken's brother works during the day.
But anyone in his house can sign for the package.
Ken will buy insurance, too.
Well, let's find out more about this in Conversation A.
Hello, Ken. What are you doing?
Hello, Rob.
I'm sending my brother a gift.
That's a nice gift!
When will you mail the package?
I'll take it to the post office after work.
Are you wrapping it well enough?
Well, I am a little worried about it.
You should wrap it in Bubble Wrap.
In Conversation A, Ken and Rob are talking.
Ken says he is sending his brother a gift.
And right there is our first key word.
Let's look at it.
send.
send.
When you send something, like a letter or a gift, you mail it.
We can usually use "send" and "mail" in the same way.
Right. You can send letters and cards to people for their birthdays or for the
holidays.
But if you send something, you do not take it there yourself.
Let's use this in a sentence.
I want to send a letter to my mom.
Or, I want to send my grandfather his birthday present.
And I need to send my sister a note.
Or, we can send that present in the mail.
Later Rob asks Ken when he will mail the package.
And that's the next key word.
package.
package.
A package is a box that you put things in.
You mail packages to other people.
Packages can be big or small.
So let's use this in a sentence, too.
I mailed a package to my dad for his birthday.
Or I could say: This package is so heavy.
I love it when people mail me packages.
It is fun, and it makes me happy.
Now Rob asks if Ken is wrapping the package well.
When you mail a package, you have to cover it in paper so it is safe when it is
mailed.
This is called wrapping something.
And you wrap presents so that no one can see what is inside.
You have to wrap packages so that the box is covered well.
It's important to wrap a package well.
In the last sentence, Rob says Ken should wrap the package in Bubble Wrap.
Now Nathan, what is Bubble Wrap?
Oh. Well, Bubble Wrap is something you use to protect things.
You can wrap things in Bubble Wrap so that they won't break easily.
That's right. I usually wrap picture frames or CDs in Bubble Wrap when I want to
mail them.
That keeps them safe.
And you would also wrap a plate in Bubble Wrap if you were going to mail it.
But you would not use Bubble Wrap to wrap a stuffed animal because a stuffed
animal can't break.
Bubble Wrap is also fun to play with.
That's right. Bubble Wrap is fun to play with.
Now don't forget to wrap your packages well.
And if you need to, send someone a present in the mail.
But now we should take a look at Conversation B.
So let's do that.
Also, I want to be sure my brother gets the gift.
Then register the package.
When the post office delivers it, someone will need to sign for it.
Can anyone sign for the package?
Anyone in the house can.
That's perfect.
My brother works during the day.
But his wife can sign for the package.
In Conversation B, Ken says he wants to be sure his brother gets the gift.
And then Rob says someone will need to sign for the package.
Now when you sign for a package, you receive the package and sign your name so
the post office knows that it got there.
Then Ken asks if anyone can sign for the package.
And that's a key word.
Let's look at it.
anyone.
anyone.
When you use the word "anyone," you are talking about any person without
actually saying their name.
Let's try to use this word in a sentence.
You can ask, "Is anyone home?" when you go to someone's house.
Or I can say: I don't know anyone at my school yet.
Let's try another way.
You can ask a person: Do you know anyone who can speak English well?
So in our conversation, Rob says that anyone who's in the house can sign.
So this means that any person who is there can receive the package.
Now Ken says that is good because his brother works during the day.
And that's our next key word.
during.
during.
The word "during" means from the beginning of a time to the end of a time.
So if Ken's brother works during the day, he works from the beginning of the day
to the end of the day.
And we sleep during the night.
We sleep from the start of night to the morning.
That is during the night.
So you can ask someone: What do you do during the weekend?
Uh, or what do you do during the day.
Now Katie, what do you do during the weekend?
Well, usually during the weekend, I sleep a lot.
Other times I read books or go to the grocery store.
And lots of times I spend time with friends.
We like to go out to eat during the weekend.
Now Nathan, what do you usually do during the day?
Oh, during the day, I usually need to go to work, like I am right now.
I'm working during the day right now.
OK, let's look at another word, though.
And that word is "perfect." When you use the word "perfect," you are talking
about something that there is nothing wrong with.
If I say, "This food tastes perfect," this food is amazing.
Well, perfect, Katie.
Or we can say: Nobody is perfect.
That's a perfect way to use this word.
OK. But now I think it's a perfect time to move on to Conversation C.
So let's do that now.
Maybe you should buy some insurance, too.
To be safe!
Do I need it?
The post office is pretty careful with things.
It's still a good idea.
If the gift breaks, the post office will pay you for it.
That sounds good.
Thanks for your help!
You're welcome.
You can mail packages for me any time!
In Conversation C, Rob says: Maybe you should buy some insurance.
Let's look at the word "insurance." Insurance is what protects you if something
happens to you.
I want to have health insurance if I have to go to the hospital.
Right. Now there is health insurance, car insurance, home insurance and travel
insurance.
And they are all very important.
Rob says insurance is a good idea because the post office will pay you if the
gift breaks.
And hey, that's a key word.
break.
break.
If something breaks, that means it no longer works right, and then you can't use
it anymore.
For example, plates or cups can break.
If they break, they're in more than one piece, and you can't use them anymore.
And lots of things can break.
Computers can break.
Phones can break.
You can break the bones in your body, too.
Did you ever break a bone, Katie?
Yes, I have.
I broke my arm when I was little.
It hurt very badly.
Now I said I broke my arm.
B-R-O-K-E, "broke" is the past tense of "break." Now Nathan, have you ever
broken anything?
Well, I broke a bone when I was little, too.
This one right here on my shoulder.
It wasn't very fun.
Now our Use It sentence for today is: Maybe you should buy some insurance.
Maybe you should do something.
Let's use it.
Katie, maybe you should give our friends a Use It sentence.
You're right, Nathan. Maybe I should.
Maybe Kim should go to the movies with Tim.
Or, maybe my mom should mail the package.
Hmm, maybe he should study for his test.
That would be a good idea.
Or, maybe she should speak more English.
She would be better at English if she did that.
That's true.
Good job, friends.
Say your own Use It sentence today.
Say it to a friend.
Now maybe we should practice our key words together.
What do you think, Nathan?
Should we say our key words?
Well, you know, I think maybe we should.
Let's do it now.
Here is your first key word.
send.
send.
I am sending Dad a birthday present.
package.
package.
Mom sent two packages to Aunt Rose.
anyone.
anyone.
Do you know anyone in Taipei?
during.
during.
David fell asleep during the movie.
break.
break.
Jody dropped the cup and it broke.
OK, great job, everyone.
Say your key words and your sentences to your friends.
It's great practice for your English.
So keep working hard.
We will be rightback.
