Hi, everyone. This is LTE TV.
And I want to welcome you to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Nathan.
Are you ready for today's lesson?
Our new topic is AROUND TOWN.
And the title of our lesson is Stamps, Cards and Packages.
Stamps, Cards and Packages.
This looks like it could be a pretty helpful lesson, right, Katie?
It does. We will talk about mailing letters.
Hi, friends. My name is Katie.
I'm happy you're here today.
Let's get ready for today's lesson.
Take out your LTE magazine and turn to today's Let's Begin reading.
You can follow along with Nathan right now.
Let's Begin!
Joe is looking at stamps online.
There are many kinds of stamps.
People can mail things with stamps.
Joe and Megan mail birthday cards, holiday cards and letters.
But they don't like the lines at the post office.
What can they do?
They can print postage at home!
Let's learn more about this in Conversation A.
Good morning, Joe.
Good morning, Megan.
What are you looking at?
I'm looking at stamps online.
You can look at stamps online?
Of course!
Look at all these stamps.
You can buy many different kinds.
Wow, there are a lot of stamps.
I like these.
Me, too.
In Conversation A, Megan and Joe are talking.
Megan asks, "What are you looking at?" And Joe says: I'm looking at stamps
online.
That's right. Joe is looking at stamps online.
Hey, Nathan, there's a key word in that sentence, isn't there?
Uh well, yes, there is.
The key word is this: stamp.
stamp.
A stamp is something you need to buy to send something.
You have to pay for stamps.
But they are not usually expensive.
Sometimes you have to put just one stamp on what you want to send.
But other times you have to use a lot of stamps.
And like our conversation says, there are lots of different kinds of stamps.
Stamps usually have pictures on them.
You can find stamps with pictures of holidays, like uh, Christmas on them.
Lots of different kinds.
I like stamps that have pictures of people on them.
Those are my favorite.
Well, I think those are cool, too.
But I also like some with maybe a mountain or a river on them, also.
Now after this, Megan says, "You can look at stamps online?" She is surprised.
But did you know that you can look at many different things online?
I like to travel, so I look at pictures of places I'd like to travel online.
And I love to read, so I like to look for new books to read online.
And you can also read about the news online.
Now today's Use It sentence is: There are a lot of stamps.
There is or there are a lot of something.
Let's use it.
There are a lot of people on the street today.
Or, there is a lot of fruit at the store.
And there is a lot of water on the ground.
There are a lot of dogs in the park.
There are a lot of drinks in the machine.
Make your own Use It sentence and write it in your magazine.
They are important.
But now it's really important to watch Conversation B.
So let's do that now.
Do you collect stamps?
No, but I like unique stamps.
I mail things with them.
Do you mail a lot of things?
Well, I mail letters.
I also mail cards on holidays and on people's birthdays.
Me, too.
I buy holiday stamps.
They are so cute!
And I have birthday stamps, too.
Special stamps are fun.
Well, in Conversation B, Megan asks if Joe collects stamps.
You can collect lots of things.
Many people collect stamps.
I collect photographs and books.
Nathan, do you collect anything?
Well, I guess you could say that I collect movies.
I do have a lot of those.
And Joe says he likes unique stamps.
He mails things with them.
And Nathan, you just used our key word.
So let's look at it now.
mail.
mail.
When you mail something, you send it through a post office.
You can mail lots of things.
You can mail cards and packages to people.
Right. And people also write letters, and then mail those letters.
And you also get mail.
If people mail something to you, it is called getting mail.
"Mail" as a noun is anything that is mailed, like a letter or a box.
Let's use this word.
I mailed my dad a present.
Or, my mom mails me a letter each week.
Hey, Katie, you just used our next key word, I think.
Uh, you said: My mom mails me a letter each week.
You're right.
"Letter" is the next key word.
letter.
letter.
A letter is a message you write from one person to another.
Many times we mail letters to people.
I like to write letters to my family.
And when you write letters and you want to mail them, you have to put the letter
into an envelope, and then put a stamp on the outside of the envelope.
Now don't forget, we talked about stamps in Conversation A.
You have to have a stamp to mail a letter.
Now there are times that we mail people cards.
We mail people cards on holidays and on their birthdays.
And that's the next key word.
birthday.
birthday.
Your birthday is the day you were born.
Your birthday is the same day every year.
Now let's use this word.
You can ask people: When is your birthday?
That's a common question.
Katie, when is your birthday?
Well, my birthday is June 30.
Nathan, when is your birthday?
My birthday is on September 6.
Now on your birthday, some people may give you a party.
Do you know what that's called?
It's called a birthday party.
And lots of people say "Happy birthday" to you when it's your birthday.
It is nice to say "Happy birthday" to people.
Megan says she buys holiday stamps because they are cute.
Now a holiday is a special day when you celebrate things.
One holiday is Christmas.
Another is Chinese New Year.
So if Megan buys holiday stamps, she buys stamps that have pictures on them,
like a Christmas tree.
That's right.
Well, that is all the time that we have right now.
So let's move on to Conversation C.
But the lines at the post office are so long.
I don't like that.
I don't, either.
But you can print your own postage at home.
You can't print the fun stamps, though.
Oh. Well, that is still convenient.
Yes, it is.
You go online.
You buy your postage.
Then you print it.
That is easy!
I can try it.
Welcome back.
In Conversation C, Megan and Joe are talking about the lines at the post office.
Now post office is a key word that we need to look at.
post office.
post office.
A post office is the place where you mail letters and send packages and buy
stamps.
Post offices can be very crowded.
But they are usually the only place where you can mail letters.
The post office mails letters and boxes.
And then people deliver or give the mail to the right person.
In the conversation, Megan says the lines at the post office are long.
She means that the lines of people are long.
When people are in a line, they are standing in lines - one person stands behind
another person and waits.
That's right.
The lines are usually long at places like the post office.
Sometimes the lines at the supermarket or at restaurants can also be long.
Yeah, sometimes you have to wait a long time in those lines.
And Joe says you can print your postage at home instead.
Now let's look at a couple of these words.
First, print.
When you print something, it means that you print it out of your computer.
You can print on paper from your computer.
Now let's look at the word "postage." Postage is another word for a stamp, and
shows that you paid money to mail your letter or package.
Megan says printing your postage at home is convenient.
Now let's look at the word "convenient." If something is convenient, it means it
is easy for you to do.
It does not cause you any problems or trouble.
That's right.
Megan says printing postage at home is convenient because she does not have to
leave home to buy stamps.
She can do it at her home.
And this way, she does not have to stand in line at the post office.
And right now is a convenient time to practice our key words.
Let's do that now.
Here's your first one.
stamp.
stamp.
Put a stamp on the envelope.
mail.
mail.
I mail Christmas cards every year.
letter.
letter.
Karen is writing a letter to her mom.
birthday.
birthday.
Joey is having a party for his birthday.
post office.
post office.
Patricia mails cards at the post office.
Good job, friends.
Practice saying your key words at home.
Say them with a friend.
It is important to practice.
And now it's time for a break.
We'll be right back.
