It's time for Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
I'm so glad you're here.
Today we finish our lessons talking about a special holiday - Mother's Day.
Today we'll meet a supermom.
And "A Supermom" is also the title of today's lesson, A Supermom.
I'm sure you know a supermom, Nathan.
I sure do.
My mom is a supermom.
Hi, friends, I'm Nathan.
I'm excited to meet Rob's guest on Let's Talk in English today.
And I'm sure you are, too.
Let's find out more about our lesson by looking at our Let's Begin reading
together.
You can find it in your magazine and follow along with Katie now.
Let's Begin!
Rob's guest, Sarah Mere, has seven kids.
It's rare for people to have so many children these days.
But Sarah enjoys them.
Her house is always full of activity.
Each of Sarah's children is precious to her, and she treats them that way.
Rob thinks Sarah is a super, fantastic mom.
Well, let's have a super time with Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Sunday is Mother's Day.
So today we are going to talk with a supermom.
Please help me welcome Mrs. Sarah Mere.
Hi, Sarah! How are you?
I'm fantastic, Rob!
Great!
So Sarah, you are a full-time mother.
I am. I have seven children.
Seven! That's terrific!
How old are they?
I have two sets of twins.
They are 10 and 8.
Those are fun ages.
Yes. And my other children are 5, 3, and this is my youngest, Hannah.
She is 18 months old.
Hi, Hannah! Welcome to the show!
Sarah Mere is a guest on Let's Talk today.
Rob starts by asking her, "How are you?" Now this is a question that we often
ask when we start a conversation.
And what answer do most people give to this question?
Well, most people say: I'm fine.
Or, I'm fine. Thank you. And you?
But how does Sarah answer this question?
Well, Sarah doesn't say she is fine.
She says, "I'm fantastic." And that's a fantastic key word to talk about.
fantastic.
fantastic.
If something is fantastic, it is very, very good.
It's wonderful.
It's amazing.
It's fantastic.
You can say: What a fantastic day!
Or, I had a fantastic vacation.
Or, have a fantastic weekend.
And of course you can say, "I'm fantastic," just like Sarah.
We find out more about Sarah in our conversation.
What do we learn, Nathan?
Well, Sarah is a full-time mother.
She doesn't have another job.
Being a mom is always her job.
And it's a fantastic job.
Sarah has seven children.
And we find out she has two sets of twins.
They are 10 and 8 years old.
Now what are twins?
When two babies are in their mother at the same time, and are born at the same
time, they're called twins.
Sarah's other kids are 5, 3, and 18 months.
Her youngest, Hannah, is on the show.
And she is so cute.
And I think Hanah is just 18 months old.
Or you could say a year and a half.
OK, now let's move on to Conversation B.
Sarah, it's rare these days for people to have so many children.
What is it like to have such a big family?
It is great, Rob.
Our house is always full of activity.
I'm sure!
But don't you ever get tired?
Being a mother does take a lot of energy, but I enjoy my family.
Sarah has a very big family.
Remember, she has seven children.
And it is rare these days for people to have so many children.
We use the phrase "these days" to talk about what is happening in our world and
around us right now.
Lots of times I say "I am very busy these days" because I work a lot.
Or you can say: Many people are looking for jobs these days.
Or these days, the... weather is warmer than it used to be.
Well, let's look at our first key word together here.
It is: rare.
rare.
If something is rare, you don't see it often.
It's something different that doesn't always happen.
We can say it's rare to have so many cold days in the spring.
It's usually very nice and warm in the spring.
Or it's rare for Jenny to have a day without anything to do.
And these days, people don't have big families.
So it's rare to see a family with so many children.
Well, a lot of activity is not rare for Sarah's house.
Let's look at that key word together.
activity.
activity.
If a place is full of activity, that means there is a lot going on.
You can say the mall is full of activity on the weekend.
Or Grandma enjoys a quiet life without a lot of activity.
Well, having seven kids would mean a lot of activity.
And it takes a lot of energy.
And sometimes we also have activities or go to activities.
It's kind of like something fun that can also help us learn.
Like when we play a game at the end of Let's Talk in English, we can call that
an activity.
Well, right now we hope that you still have energy to learn together with us.
Let's continue with Conversation C.
I spoke with some of your friends.
They call you a "supermom.".
What do you think about that?
I just love my family, Rob.
Each child is precious.
And I do my best to treat them that way.
Well, I think you are a super mom, Sarah.
Happy Mother's Day.
Thanks, Rob!
And Happy Mother's Day to every mom.
We appreciate you!
Sarah tells us that each child is precious.
And she does her best to treat them that way.
Let's look at our first key word here.
precious.
precious.
If someone is precious, they are very special to someone else.
Kids are precious.
Each child is different and unique.
And that's what makes them so precious.
We can also use this word "precious" to talk about other things.
You can say: This ring is very precious to me.
Maybe someone important gave it to me.
Or moments are very precious.
The time that you have someone is very important.
And you want to use it the best way that you can.
Or pets are also precious to people.
That's right, pets are precious to people.
My cat is precious to me.
OK, let's look at our next key word now.
treat.
treat.
The way you treat someone is what you do for that person.
We want to treat people well.
One important thing to remember is to treat people the way you want them to
treat you.
When someone is precious to you, you should treat them very well.
Parents try to treat their kids the same way.
They don't want to treat one kid differently from the other.
Students should also treat their teachers with respect.
That's very important, students.
Rob tells Sarah that she is a supermom.
And that's another super key word to look at.
super.
super.
If someone is super, they are great.
They are more than great.
They are super.
We also found out that some of Sarah's friends call her "supermom." Now here,
"supermom" is amazing and rare as a mom.
In English, we often put "super" in front of a noun to show it's very big or
powerful, like a superhero.
Or there's also Super Sentence Man.
And sometimes we have stores that are called "superstores." But right now we
have some super key words to review.
So let's do that together now.
The first one is: fantastic.
fantastic.
Al is a fantastic cook.
I love his food.
rare.
rare.
This book is rare.
It's hard to find.
activity.
activity.
There is lots of activity in the city.
precious.
precious.
Hazel's dogs are precious to her.
treat.
treat.
Treat others as you want to be treated.
super.
super.
This movie is super.
You should see it.
OK, super job, everyone.
Keep practicing your key words.
And we will be rightback.
