Hi, friends.
It's time for Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
Thank you so much for joining us today.
Today we are talking about a holiday.
And HOLIDAY is the topic for our next three days of learning together.
Today's lesson is called I Love You, Mom!
And that's exactly what I want to say to my mom.
Hi, Mom, I love you!
Now you probably know which lesson we're talking about. Right, Nathan?
Well, I think so.
It's uh, it's Mother's Day.
Hi, friends.
It's great to have you with us again.
My name is Nathan.
We want to help you get ready for today's lesson with our Let's Begin reading.
Do you have your LTE magazine?
I hope so.
Open it to today's lesson and our Let's Begin.
You can follow along in your magazine as Katie reads it.
Let's Begin!
Ken is going to a department store.
He needs a special Mother's Day gift.
But what can he get?
He wants something different and unique.
Joe gives Ken an idea.
He can find a family photo.
Then he can print it.
That is a great gift for his mom!
Are you ready for today's lesson?
I hope so.
Here is Conversation A.
Hey, Ken. Are you going home?
Yes. But first, I'm going to a department store.
I need a gift.
Is the gift for your girlfriend?
No. It's for my mother.
Mother's Day is Sunday.
Oh! That's right.
What are you giving your mother for Mother's Day?
I'm not sure.
My mom is very special.
She needs a special gift.
We just saw Ken and Joe in Conversation A.
Ken asks Joe a question at the beginning of our conversation.
What is the question, Nathan?
Well, he asks, "Are you going home?" So they must be talking at the end of the
workday.
Most people go home at the end of the workday or when they're finished with
school.
So is Ken going home?
Yes, but not right away.
First, he's going to a department store.
And we are going to look at that key word together.
department store.
department store.
A department store is a very big place where you can buy different things.
Department stores often have many floors.
I like shopping at department stores because I can buy many different things
that I need in one place.
I can get clothes, food, soap and cards at a department store.
Yes. Department stores are convenient.
What does Ken want to buy at the department store?
I know.
He wants to buy a gift for his mother.
Mother's Day is Sunday.
Mother's Day is a special day.
Ken says his mom is very special, and she needs a special gift.
And we have a special key word to talk about.
special.
special.
When something is special to you, it means a lot to you, and it's very
important.
So when Ken says his mom is very special, that means he loves his mom, and she
is very important to him.
And that is very sweet.
We can also talk about a special day.
Mother's Day is a special day.
Your birthday is a special day.
What's another special day, Nathan?
Hmm, other holidays, like Christmas or New Years are special days or special
times.
Ken also uses this word "special" to talk about a gift for his mom.
He says she needs a special gift.
So he wants the gift to be very nice for his mom.
Well, we have some more special things to learn about Ken's mom in Conversation
B.
What does your mom like?
My mom likes books.
She reads a lot.
Then get her a book.
I get a book for her every year.
I want something different for her this year.
Does she like flowers?
Yes. But everyone gives flowers.
I'm looking for something unique.
How about chocolates?
Those aren't unique, either.
And my mom doesn't like sweets.
When you are thinking about giving someone a gift, a good question to ask or
think about is what does the person like.
That's what Joe asks Ken at the beginning of our conversation.
He says: What does your mom like?
That's right.
Think about what the person likes, and then you can get them a special gift.
So Katie, what is something that you like?
Well, I like teaching key words.
Really! Me, too.
So let's look at a key word together.
get.
get.
When you get something for another person, it means you buy it for them.
Or you have it ready for them.
When you get someone a gift, you buy it for them.
You can say: I got $100 for my birthday.
My friends got me a money gift.
The past tense of the verb "get" is "got," G-O-T.
You can ask someone: What did you get for Christmas?
Or, did you get your mom anything for Mother's Day?
Well, we know Ken wants to get his mom a special gift.
She likes to read, so he could get her a book.
But he wants something different.
He wants something that is not the same as gifts he got for her already.
He wants to get his mom something unique.
He doesn't think that flowers and chocolates are unique.
Now if something is unique, it is not the same as other things.
It is different and special.
Joe is helping Ken with ideas.
That's why he says, "How about chocolates?" Or maybe he could say: How about
dumplings for lunch?
Or, how about a special card?
Or, how about we go to conversation C right now?
Do you have a good photo of your family?
Yes. Why?
Find the photo.
Make it large.
Then print it.
Then my mom can hang it on her wall.
Yes! It's something different.
And it is unique!
That's the perfect gift.
Thanks, Joe.
No problem.
Now I need something for my mother!
Well, it sounds like Ken found the perfect gift for his mother.
When you find the perfect gift for someone, you can't think of a better gift for
that person.
Now what is the perfect gift for Ken's mom, Nathan?
Well, it's a large family photo that Ken's mom can hang on her wall.
That's right.
Then she can always see her family.
Let's look at our key word here.
family.
family.
Your mother, father, brothers and sisters are all part of your family.
Some people have big families, and some people have small families.
Nathan, can you tell us about your family?
Uh, sure. Uh, I love talking about my family.
My family is very special to me.
I have an older sister in Canada, and a younger brother and sister who live with
my parents.
You do have a special family, Nathan.
I really miss my family.
I have many pictures of my family on my walls at home.
I'd love to see a picture of your family, Katie.
I'll show you one.
I just need to find a good picture to share.
And we found another key word in our conversation.
find.
find.
When you are looking for something, you find it.
That means you get it or you see it.
You know, I'm always happy when I find a special gift for someone.
And that's our next key word.
Or it's another way to kind of say the key word "find." The past tense is
"found," F-O-U-N-D.
Find and found.
When you found something, that means you didn't see or didn't have it before,
but now you do.
But... you know, I think I had a pen.
But Katie, I don't see my pen.
Do you know... know where I put it?
Nathan, I... think it's behind your ear.
Oh. Oh. I found it.
I found my pen.
Thanks, Katie.
Oh, you're... you're welcome, Nathan.
OK. Well, we found two key words in Conversation C.
So now I think we should review our key words.
The first one is: department store.
department store.
Vivian shops at department stores.
special.
special.
Holidays are very special.
get.
get.
Can you get food for dinner?
family.
family.
There are four people in my family.
find.
find.
Where is your book? Find it.
Great job.
And don't forget to practice at home.
We'll be rightback.
