Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Let's Talk in English at LTE TV.
I hope you are ready for a new lesson.
My name is Nathan.
And we are happy to have you here today.
Today we are still talking about NATURE.
And our new lesson is called Amazing Animals.
Amazing Animals.
That sounds amazing, doesn't it, Katie?
It does sound amazing.
Animals are interesting.
Hi, everyone. My name is Katie.
Animals are wonderful.
And today we are going to teach you more about them.
Let's find out more in our Let's Begin reading.
You can read along with Nathan right now.
Let's Begin!
Rob tells Ken some amazing things about animals.
Adult polar bears are very heavy.
But they only weigh a little when they're born.
They gain almost 100 pounds in their first eight months.
When baby giraffes are born, they're already taller than most people.
Giraffes are six feet tall at birth!
Baby blue whales are also amazing.
Sounds amazing.
Let's find out more in Conversation A.
What are you reading, Rob?
I'm reading a book about animals.
I'm learning some amazing things.
What are you reading about?
Baby animals.
Did you know that polar bears weigh only one or two pounds when they're born?
Really! Adult polar bears are really big!
You're right!
Some adult polar bears weigh 1,500 pounds!
Baby polar bears gain weight fast.
Yes. They'll weigh almost 100 pounds at eight months old.
In conversation A, Rob is reading a book about animals.
Now what kind of animals are they, Katie?
Well, our conversation says they're amazing animals.
Sounds pretty cool.
Right.
And Rob says he's learning some amazing things.
That's a key word.
amazing.
amazing.
"Amazing" is a word that describes how interesting something is.
And amazing things usually surprise you.
What kind of things can be amazing?
Well, I think sunsets can be amazing.
The colors are so pretty.
So I think they are amazing.
Right. We can call lots of things amazing, like books or movies or pictures or,
like in the conversation, animals.
So if Rob is learning some amazing things, this means he's learning some things
that are cool and surprising and interesting.
Let's find out what Rob is learning.
Rob tells Ken that polar bears weigh only one or two pounds when they're born.
There are two key words there.
Let's look at the first one.
bear.
bear.
A bear is a huge animal.
And it has four legs.
That's right. Bears are amazing.
But they're also dangerous.
There are a lot of different kinds of bears, too.
Black bears, brown bears and polar bears, like in our conversation.
Polar bears are white and very dangerous.
Did you know that there are actually eight different kinds of bears?
That's amazing!
And some bears weigh around 1,500 pounds.
Wow!
Amazing.
And Katie, you just used another key word.
Let's look at it together.
weigh.
weigh.
When you weigh something, you see how heavy it is.
A bear weighs a lot... sometimes almost 1,500 pounds.
That's right. But a different animal, like a cat or a rabbit, does not weigh a
lot.
They are light.
But bigger animals are heavy, and they do weigh a lot.
Right. And you know, another time that we use this word is when we go to the
airport.
Because when you get on a plane, you have to weigh your bags, too.
That's a good time to use this word.
What are other ways that you can use this word?
You can also ask: How much do you weigh?
When you go to the doctor, the doctor usually says: How much do you weigh?
Now, all of these things are amazing to learn.
But now it's time to watch Conversation B.
What else did you read?
Guess how tall giraffes are at birth.
Hmm. Four feet tall.
No. They're six feet tall!
That's almost as tall as me!
I know!
Oh, here's something about blue whales.
Blue whales are the world's largest animals.
Right. Baby blue whales gain 200 pounds a day in their first year!
Two hundred pounds a day?
I'm happy I don't gain weight like that!
Me, too!
In Conversation B, we find out how tall giraffes are at birth.
Now the phrase "at birth" means the moment when someone or something is born.
Our conversation says that giraffes are six feet tall at birth.
So they are six feet tall the moment they're born.
Wow! That's huge.
Most people are less than a foot tall at birth.
You're right.
But we need to talk about a key word first.
The key word is "foot" or "feet".
foot.
feet.
Here, the word "foot" means how long something is.
The singular, when you're talking about just one of this word, is "foot".
So things can be one foot long, or two or more feet long.
We use "feet" when we're talking about two or more.
Some people are really tall, and are six or more feet tall.
Lots of basketball players are six feet tall.
Rob says that baby giraffes are six feet tall at birth.
Ken says, "That's almost as tall as me!" So Ken is taller than six feet. Wow!
Katie, did you know that blue whales are the world's largest animals?
That's amazing!
It is amazing.
And whale is also our next key word.
Let's look at it now.
whale.
whale.
A whale is a kind of animal that lives in the ocean.
They're huge.
And there are many different kinds of whales.
Right. And like the conversation says, whales are the largest animals in the
world.
Did you know blue whales gain 200 pounds a day their first year?
I didn't know that.
That's amazing!
OK, let's go on to today's Read It.
The world is full of amazing animals.
Some adult polar bears weigh 1,500 pounds.
But a baby polar bear weighs only one to two pounds when it's born.
When giraffes are born, they are already six feet tall.
That's taller than a lot of people!
Blue whales are the world's largest animals.
Baby blue whales have to gain a lot of weight to become so large.
So they gain 200 pounds a day during their first year!
Our Read It starts by saying: The world is full of amazing animals.
And there are definitely many amazing animals in the world.
Katie, what are some amazing animals?
Well, I think kangaroos are amazing.
We've talked about them before.
That is true.
Our Read It says polar bears are amazing.
They are only one or two pounds when they are born.
That is so little!
Yes. But the amazing thing is polar bears weigh around 1,500 pounds when they're
adults.
That's huge!
Another animal also gains a lot of weight when it grows.
That is a blue whale.
Blue whales gain 200 pounds a day.
Wow!
Let's look at that phrase: gain weight".
Weight is how heavy something is.
So if something gains weight, it gets heavier.
People gain weight.
Animals gain weight.
Living things gain weight.
For adult people, it is usually not healthy to gain weight or to gain a lot of
weight.
You don't want to gain a lot of weight.
That's right, we don't want to gain weight.
But now we should move on to our key words.
Say them with us right now.
This is the first key word.
amazing.
amazing.
What an amazing story!
Tell it again!
bear.
bear.
Bears are dangerous animals.
weigh.
weigh.
How much does your baby weigh?
foot.
feet.
foot.
feet.
Sarah is short.
She's five feet tall.
whale.
whale.
We saw a whale on our boat trip.
Good job, everyone.
Say your key words at home for more practice.
We'll be rightback.
