This is Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
We have a great show for you today.
And we're glad you're here.
We want to teach you some English today.
But we also want to teach you more about travel.
Actually, our lesson today is called Travel Tips.
Travel Tips.
Now a tip is something to help you do something else, right, Nathan?
Yes, you are right, Katie.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
Today Rob has a special guest to tell us some more about traveling.
Now we'll start with today's Let's Begin.
Here's a tip.
It's in your LTE magazine so that you can read along with Katie right now.
Let's Begin.
Rob talks to Todd Traveler.
He tells people to plan trips three or more months ahead.
Then they can find the best available travel deals.
They should match their travel dates with a good time to travel to their
destination.
If they plan to travel overseas, they should check their passport.
It must be valid for at least six months.
Wow, I think there is a lot we can learn today.
Let's go to Conversation A.
(Music).
Hello, and welcome to Let's Talk!
Do you like to travel?
Well, today our guest has some travel tips for all of you.
Please help me welcome Mr. Todd Traveler!
Welcome to our program, Todd.
Thank you, Rob.
What should people remember as they plan a trip?
First, plan three or more months ahead.
Then you have time to search for the best available travel deals.
Yes. Everyone wants to save money.
Check your travel dates.
They should match a good time to travel to your destination.
Yes. If you don't like cold, rainy weather, don't go to England in winter!
Right.
Todd must know a lot about travel.
It's even in his name - Todd Traveler.
Rob's first question for Todd is: What should people remember as they plan a
trip?
Todd thinks it's important to give yourself time to plan.
He says you should do it at least three months ahead.
Three months ahead is like saying three months before.
My sister went to college two years ahead of me.
It's like saying two years before me.
You can also use "ahead" in a different way.
I could say: I want to practice English more in the months ahead.
The months ahead are the months that are coming.
Next, Todd says planning ahead will help you find the best available travel
deals.
Today's key word is "available".
available.
If something is available, you can get it or use it.
That's right.
Katie, have you ever had to wait for an available table at a restaurant?
I have.
Sometimes I've had to wait for a few minutes before a table becomes available.
So when you're going on vacation, if you go to a hotel, you can plan ahead so
you know there are rooms available.
That's a good reason to check your travel dates.
Like Todd says, your dates should match a good time to go to your destination.
And there's another key word.
match.
match.
If two things match, they fit together.
Your travel dates should match your destination, which is where you want to go.
That means it's a good time to go to that place.
Most of us usually try to match our clothes so that they look good together.
But that's all the time we have.
So let's move on to Conversation B.
What else?
If you plan to travel overseas, check your passport.
For what?
To be sure it's valid for at least six months.
If it's not, you can't travel.
Check to see if you need a visa, too.
Good idea.
What else?
Learn about your destination.
Write down places you want to see and things you want to do.
Then make sure you have enough time!
That's right!
So what else does Todd think we should remember when we travel?
In Conversation B, he says, "If you plan to travel overseas, check your
passport." Wow, this sentence has two key words.
Let's look at it carefully.
This is the first key word.
overseas.
overseas.
Overseas means on the other side of the ocean.
Right. You travel overseas or you go overseas.
That means you go over the sea or ocean to see another place.
My family lives overseas.
I live in Asia, but my sister lives in North America.
And if you go overseas, check your passport.
Let's learn about this key word.
passport.
passport.
A passport is a small book that shows you who you are and where you come from.
Katie and I both have American passports.
The important thing about a passport is that it lets you travel to other
countries.
And your passport has a date that tells you when you'll need to get a new one.
Todd says it also has to be valid for at least six months when you travel.
That's a hard sentence.
But let's look at the key word phrase that we see here.
at least.
at least.
At least six months means no less than six months.
Katie, you're at least twenty years old, right?
Yes. I'm not less than twenty years old.
But I'm not going to tell you how old I really am.
Well, at least you answered my question.
You didn't do less than that.
And you actually help me teach a key word phrase, too.
So if you are less than six months away from the date on your passport, you
won't be able to travel.
OK, let's move on and look at today's Read It.
When you want to plan a trip, you should do a few things.
Start planning at least three months ahead.
Then you have time to find the best available travel deals.
Check your travel dates.
They should match a good time to travel to your destination.
If you plan to travel overseas, check your passport.
Be sure it's valid for at least six months.
If it's not, you can't travel.
Let's look at the first Read It sentence.
When you want to plan a trip, you should do a few things first.
And we've talked about those few things already.
But this is a great sentence pattern, isn't it, Nathan?
Yes, it is.
Because we use it a lot.
When you do this, you should do that.
When you practice English, you should use some new words and phrases.
Or when you ride on an airplane, you should always take a jacket.
It can get very cold on airplanes and in airports.
Now the first thing to remember is plan early.
And the reason you should plan early is so that you will have time to find the
best available deals.
Have time.
Time is not really something you can own or get.
But if we say that we "have time" in English, that means we are available to do
something.
Oh, that reminds me.
Nathan, do you have time to help us practice our key words right now?
Hmm... I just had to check.
Uh, yes. I think I have time to help with the key words.
Here is your first key word.
available.
available.
Are there any rooms available next month?
match.
match.
Do the pictures match the story's words?
overseas.
overseas.
Jim will travel overseas this summer.
passport.
passport.
You need a passport to travel overseas.
at least.
at least.
You need at least $12 to buy a ticket.
Hey, you did great, everyone.
I am glad that you have time to practice these key words every day.
It's very important.
So now let's take abreak.
