Welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
Thanks for joining us today.
Are you ready to learn something new?
We're starting a great topic today - TRAVEL.
And today's lesson is called What Can You Do on Vacation?
What Can You Do on Vacation?
Nathan, what can you do on vacation?
That's a very good question.
Hello, everyone. My name is Nathan.
Maybe I can answer that question better after today's lesson.
Or maybe even today's Let's Begin reading will help me answer that question.
Katie's going to read it now.
But you can read with her from your magazine for practice, too.
Let's Begin.
Megan can't take a vacation right now.
But she can take one in four months.
She can plan now and get some good deals.
What can she do on vacation?
Maybe she can go to the beach or the mountains.
She can think about her intrests.
Then she can decide.
Those are good vacation ideas.
But let's find out more in Conversation A.
I need a vacation!
Right now?
No. I can't take a vacation right now.
But I can plan one!
When can you take a vacation?
In about four months.
Good. Plan early.
Maybe you can get some good deals.
Yes! I'm looking forward to my vacation!
I love travel!
So do I!
So who's thinking about a vacation?
In Conversation A, we see that Megan needs a vacation.
That's what she tells Rob.
And Rob says, "Right now?" In that short sentence he uses a key word.
right.
right.
"Right" often means correct or true.
But it's different here, isn't it, Nathan?
Yes, it is different.
When Rob says "right now," he is asking if she really means at that exact time.
"Right now" means at this moment.
You can ask someone: Do you have time to talk right now?
That means you want to talk to them at that moment.
Katie, can you give us another example right now?
I can.
I could say: Let's look at our Use It sentence right now.
Megan says she can only plan a vacation now.
She can't take one yet.
Then Rob says today's Use It sentence.
When can you take a vacation?
When can you do something?
I often ask my friends: When can you Skype?
Or at work, sometimes I need to ask: When can you meet with me?
Or sometimes my boss might ask: When can you get this done?
There are lots of different times to use this sentence.
So try it yourself.
So in about four months, Megan can take a vacation.
But Rob says if she plans early, she might get some good deals.
And this is a great key word to know.
deal.
deal.
A deal is a special low price or a good price for something.
So Megan might look for a deal on airplane tickets.
You can find deals on many different things.
When you get something "buy one, get one free" in a store, that's also a deal.
You pay for one thing but get two.
That's a good deal.
Do you often find good deals when you shop online, Nathan?
I do.
I often shop online and get good deals there.
And I look forward to doing that.
Good. OK. Well, I hope you are looking forward to or excited about Conversation
B because that's what we're going to watch right now.
I can do so many things on vacation.
I know.
You can go to cities and visit museums.
Or I can go to the beach.
Yes. You can also eat good food.
Or take a class and learn something.
Or I can walk or bike or climb mountains!
How can you decide?
I don't know!
In this conversation, Rob and Megan think of a lot of ideas for her vacation.
There are so many things you can do on vacation.
Megan has so many choices.
And there are so many places she could go.
And each place has so many activities.
Wow! There are so many ways to use the phrase "so many".
Yes, there are.
Rob says you can go to different cities or visit different museums on vacations.
But Megan has another idea.
She can go to the beach.
Let's look at this key word.
beach.
beach.
Have you ever been to the beach?
The beach is the place next to the sea.
Beaches have a lot of sand.
And they're next to the water.
Have you ever been to a beach, Katie?
Well, I have been a few times.
But my home is very far from the beach.
But lots of people like to take vacations at a place with a beach.
They're usually very beautiful and relaxing.
That's right.
My family often goes to the beach for vacation.
Rob also says you can find good food or take classes on vacation.
But taking classes doesn't seem like a vacation to me.
What do you think he means, Katie?
Well, if you go to a beach, you can sometimes take water sports lessons.
You might also be able to find some art classes that are special to some areas,
too.
Or a painting lesson can teach you how to make local art.
Hmm, maybe I could try a class sometime.
Have you ever taken a fun class on vacation?
Or maybe you like to walk or bike or climb mountains on vacation.
Let's look at that key word.
mountain.
mountain.
Mountains, like beaches, are usually very beautiful.
But they're very different.
Yes. Mountains are very high places on Earth that people try to climb.
Mt. Everest is the tallest.
But there are many famous mountains.
So there are lots of places you can go on vacation.
But for now we need to go to Conversation C.
What month is four months from now?
August . That is a good time for the beach.
Or the mountains.
But many people travel in August.
Places are crowded.
Right. So I won't visit famous sights.
Consider the weather and your interests.
Then decide.
I can't forget one thing.
What's that?
Money! Travel can be expensive!
Last time we were talking about lots of vacation choices.
Now Rob and Megan talk about how to make the choice easier.
First, Rob asks what month is four months from now.
It's good to use this phrase "from now," like this:
The end of the month is how many weeks from now, Nathan?
Hmm, it's just one week from now, actually.
May is coming soon.
You know what?
I'm going to a wedding a few days from now.
That's very soon.
Megan understands why Rob asks about the month.
He wonders what that time will be good for.
Megan says it's good for the beach.
But Rob says it's good for the mountains, too.
But he also knows that there will be a lot of people traveling at that time,
too.
August is popular for traveling.
So Megan plans on going to places that aren't as well-known.
And Rob gives her some advice: Consider or think about the weather and your
interests.
Is it going to rain? Or will it be very hot?
Will it snow? Or will the sun shine?
Those are important things to think about.
But your interests are very important, too.
And that is a key word.
Let's look at it.
interest.
interest.
An interest is something that you think is interesting or would like to do.
Hopefully your job is about your interest.
How could you plan a vacation with your interests, Nathan?
Well, think about what you like to do, and find things to do at the place of
your vacation that you like.
OK, we hope that you're going to like today's key words.
Let's start reviewing them now.
right.
right.
Let's go right now. Hurry!
deal.
deal.
This book is $1.
That's a good deal!
beach.
beach.
Can we play on the beach today?
mountain.
mountain.
These mountains are really tall.
interest.
interest.
I like sports.
What are your interests?
Good job, everyone.
Don't forget these key words.
Practice them at home.
And we'll be right back after thisbreak.
