Hello, everyone.
Welcome to a new week of learning together.
My name is Katie.
And I'm so glad you joined us again.
We have a new topic to look at today.
We are talking about NATURE.
And the title of today's lesson is Green Houses and Green Cars.
So Nathan, do you like the color green?
Oh, yeah, I... I do like the color green.
In today's lesson we'll learn about a different kind of green, though.
Hi, everyone. My name is Nathan.
We want to help you get ready for our lesson with our Let's Begin reading.
So please open your Let's Talk in English magazine.
Did you find the Let's Begin reading?
Yes? Good.
Now you can follow along with Katie.
Let's Begin.
Today is Earth Day.
Joe is reading about a green house.
It makes its own power.
It gets energy from the wind and the sun.
The house also saves water.
How? It collects rainwater.
This house is good for the environment.
It's also good for people's wallets!
OK, now let's move on to our first conversation - Conversation A.
Happy Earth Day, Joe!
Oh, hi, Susie! Happy Earth Day.
Are you going to the LTE TV Earth Day event later today?
Yes. We can help clean up our neighborhood.
I'm glad.
Me, too.
So what are you reading?
I'm reading about a green house.
A green house?
That house isn't green. It's blue.
So today is a special day.
Nathan, what special day is today?
Well, it's Earth Day.
That's why Susie starts our conversation by saying "Happy Earth Day".
Yes, Happy Earth Day.
And we see a key word there.
Let's talk about it.
Earth.
Earth.
We live on Earth.
The Earth is filled with land, water, sky and air.
The Earth is our home.
So we know what Earth is.
But what is Earth Day?
Well, Earth Day is a day to think about the Earth and how we can take care of
it.
Yeah, people do a lot of bad things to the Earth.
We make the Earth dirty.
Even just driving a car or a scooter puts bad things on Earth.
But we can also do good things for the Earth, right, Nathan?
Yes. So we can uh, walk or... or bike or take the bus instead of driving
everywhere in our own car.
We can also keep water clean.
We can try not to make so much garbage.
And we can try to be green.
Green? Oh, you don't mean the color, right?
Right. In our conversation, Joe is reading about a green house.
Here, "green" means good for the Earth.
So a green house is good for the Earth.
But if "greenhouse" is one word, that means a building where you can grow
plants.
That's different.
That's right.
Now have you ever heard someone say "be green" or "go green"?
This means that you should do things that are good for the Earth.
I read about a green car.
This car is not green in color.
But it's better for the Earth than other cars.
That's right.
OK, let's find out more about this green house in Conversation B.
No. The house isn't the color green.
It's good for the environment.
I know. So how is this house green?
It makes its own power.
Oh, really? How does it do that?
It uses energy from the wind and the sun.
Really? That's fantastic.
So if something is green, it is good for the Earth.
Or we can also say it is good for the environment.
Environment . That's a long word.
Let's say it together again.
Environment.
Good job.
So what is the environment, Katie?
Well, the environment includes air, water and land.
The environment is where we live.
We want to keep our environment clean and healthy.
That's true.
So how can a green house help the environment?
Well, Joe tells us it makes its own power.
It uses energy from the sun and wind.
Hey, you just used both of our key words, Nathan.
You used "energy" and "power".
Well, let's look at both of these words, then.
Let's start with "energy".
energy.
Energy is what you need for something to work.
A car needs energy to drive.
Where does a car get its energy from?
Gas can give a car energy.
Right. And you can also get energy from the sun and wind.
Green cars can use energy from the sun to drive.
Some cities use energy from the wind to keep their lights on.
So energy gives something power.
Let's talk about this key word.
power.
power.
Power is how energy is used.
So the sun's energy can be used as power for a car.
Or in a green house, the sun's energy gives the house power for lights, a TV and
more.
Susie is really interested in learning about green houses.
And I hope you are, too.
At the end of our conversation she says, "That's fantastic." Now this is a
fantastic word to use.
If something is fantastic, it's very good and very interesting.
Well, we've learned some fantastic things together already today.
And you are doing a fantastic job.
Let's learn some more fantastic things from Conversation C.
The house also saves water.
That's interesting. How?
The house collects rainwater.
Then people can use this water in the house.
Wow. This house really is great for the environment.
And it is also great for people's wallets.
Why?
People can save money on their bills!
So a green house makes its own power and it uses energy from the sun and wind.
At the beginning of our conversation, we find out about another great thing a
green house does.
What is that, Nathan?
Well, we learned that a green house also saves water.
That's a pretty cool thing for a house to do.
Well, you mean that's fantastic, isn't it?
Well, let's look at our key word here.
save.
save.
When a house saves water, it doesn't use a lot of water.
When you save water or something else, you don't waste it, or you don't use it
in the wrong way.
How else can we use this verb?
I'm trying to save money.
I need to think about things I want to buy, and not use all my money so I can
save some.
But you can also save paper.
Don't use that much paper.
Or you can save energy in your home by not leaving too many lights on.
So how does this green house save water?
Joe tells us the house collects rainwater.
That's right, Joe tells us the house collects rainwater.
So let's look at our key word.
collect.
collect.
When you collect something, you bring it together from different places.
And so when we say the house collects rainwater, it gets water from rain from
different parts of the house,
puts it together, and then it can be used in the house again.
You can also say: Stan is collecting money for Tim's birthday gift.
He's asking people to put money together to buy Tim's gift.
Well, collecting rainwater is great for the environment.
It helps you save water.
And it is also great for people's wallets.
Now if something is great for your wallet, what does that mean, Nathan?
Well, what do people keep in their wallets?
Usually money.
So if something is great for people's wallets, that means it helps them save
money.
That's right.
You can say cooking at home is great for my wallet.
Or, going to that restaurant was good.
But it wasn't good for my wallet.
OK, everyone, now it's time to practice our key words.
Here is the first one.
Earth.
Earth.
Earth is our home.
power.
power.
We can't watch TV.
There is no power.
energy.
energy.
Nothing can move without energy.
save.
save.
Walk more.
That saves gas.
collect.
collect.
Al is collecting money for poor people.
Well, I hope you find these key words useful.
Be sure and practice them.
We'll be right back afterthis.
