Hello, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Rob.
I hope you're doing well today.
You know, we live in a very busy world.
There is always something interesting or exciting happening in some part of our
world.
But how do we find out what's happening?
Through the news, of course.
The news is very important.
This week we learned how to talk about the news in English.
Do you still remember some of the things we talked about?
If not, that's OK.
We're going to review right now.
We're also going to review our lesson about baseball.
Many people like to play baseball.
Do you?
Baseball is a fun game.
It's also something fun to talk about.
So let's begin our review with our first lesson from this week.
It's called Play Ball!
Joe! Nice uniform.
Thanks! It's my baseball team's uniform.
You're on a baseball team?
Yes. I want more exercise, remember?
And I love baseball.
Great! How often do you play?
We practice on Monday evenings.
And we play games on weekends.
How many people are on your team?
We have 15 players.
What position do you play?
I play first base.
Do you have good players on your team?
Yes. We have some great pitchers.
Does your team win a lot of games?
We're doing pretty well.
We are 5-0.
Wow! You guys are really good!
They're really good.
I just joined the team.
Ah, I see.
Do you play baseball, Ken?
I play sometimes. Why?
Our team needs more players.
Maybe you can join the team.
Maybe. I like baseball.
Come with me to practice tonight.
I can introduce you to the team.
OK. Can I borrow your bat and glove?
Of course.
Great! Let's go!
Hey, Ken! Did you decide yet?
Are you going to join the team?
I don't know, Joe.
I'm still thinking about it.
What is there to think about?
Just join!
Our team can use a strong arm like yours.
Well, you guys are a great team.
And I really liked your coach!
He liked you, too.
He really wants you to join.
I do like baseball.
The team really needs you.
What position can I play?
What position do you want to play?
Anything!
I just don't want to sit on the bench.
Don't worry. You'll be on the field a lot.
You are a really good baseball player!
Well, you're pretty good, too.
You made a nice catch last night.
Oh, right. I caught your fly ball.
Then I was out.
Sorry about that.
It's OK!
You played really well!
So did you!
Later you hit a home run!
Yeah. That was cool.
OK, Joe. I'll join your team.
That's great! I'll tell the coach.
I'm excited.
This is going to be fun!
I agree! Play ball!
Hi, Ken. What are you doing?
I'm reading the newspaper online.
Which one?
The Seattle Times.
I like that newspaper.
I like it, too.
I read several newspapers online.
Me, too.
But this one is my favorite.
Why is that?
It has a lot of interesting news.
It's easy to read, too.
What are you reading now?
I'm reading the world news.
A lot of things are happening around the world.
I know.
Too many things are happening!
Yes. So I don't usually read everything.
I just read the headlines.
I do that, too.
Do you read our local paper online?
Sometimes.
But usually I watch the local news on TV.
I watch the local news on TV, too.
Then I can see more pictures and video clips.
But I sometimes check local news stories online.
The online newspapers update the stories often.
I like that.
Online newspapers are better than paper newspapers!
They are.
But they are the same in one way.
What's that?
Neither of them has much good news!
Hi, Susie. What are you reading?
I'm reading the national news.
The president is taking a trip.
I know. I read about his trip online.
I read the news online sometimes.
But I like paper newspapers better.
Why? The news is already old when you read it.
Not always.
And I like holding the paper in my hands.
Also, I can see many stories at one time.
When you read a newspaper online, you mostly see headlines.
So I can read articles faster in a paper newspaper.
Well, I like online papers.
Online papers update stories often.
True.
I have to wait to read the next day's newspaper.
That's the problem with paper newspapers.
It's not a problem for me.
I don't need to know everything now.
True. But when exciting stories happen, I want up-to-date news.
Yes. I do read about international events online.
I like to read business news online, too.
It can change fast.
It can.
But there is one very nice thing about paper newspapers.
What's that?
If I spill coffee on a paper newspaper, it doesn't matter!
(Music).
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
Today I am very excited to have a famous TV reporter here with us.
Please help me welcome Miss Rita Reporter!
Welcome to our program, Rita.
It's exciting to interview a famous reporter!
Thank you, Rob.
I'm glad to be here.
What's the best thing about being a TV reporter?
Every day is different.
One day I may report on a war.
The next, I may interview a famous person.
Do you enjoy interviewing famous people?
Usually.
Some of them are very nice.
But others refuse to answer my questions.
What is the hardest part of your job?
For me, it's interviewing someone during difficult times.
Like what?
Well, maybe someone has died in an accident.
I have to ask a relative for an interview.
That is hard.
It's the worst part of my job.
But I love traveling and meeting interesting people.
Those are two great things about being a TV reporter!
TV reporters have an exciting job.
Reporters meet interesting people and do different things each day.
One day they may report on a war.
The next day, they might interview a famous person.
That can be good and bad.
Some famous people are nice; others refuse to answer questions.
Reporters must also ask for interviews during difficult times.
When someone has died, it's hard to interview a relative.
OK, friends, it's time to see if you were paying attention during the review.
Now here's your first question.
Rob! Hey, Rob.
Oh, hey, Chris.
It's nice to see you.
It's nice to see you, too.
Did I just hear you say that you are going to ask some review questions?
Yes. Would you like to help us answer these questions?
Of course.
Wonderful!
OK, question number one.
What did Joe catch last night?
Hmm, what did Joe catch last night?
Do you need help?
Yes, please.
OK. What did Joe catch last night?
A. a bat.
B. a base.
C. a fly ball.
Or D. a home run.
Oh, I know.
Joe caught a fly ball.
That's right, he caught Ken's fly ball.
Great job, Chris.
Thank you. Thank you.
OK, question number two.
I interviewed a famous reporter this week.
Yes, yes. Her name was Rita Reporter.
Very good, Chris.
What did Rita say is the hardest part of her job?
Do you remember?
Hmm, Rita said interviewing someone during difficult times is the hardest part
of her job.
That's right.
Rita said that that's the worst part of her job.
But she loves traveling and meeting interesting people.
Those are two great things about being a TV reporter.
That's right, Chris.
Well friends, it's time for us to take a break.
We'll see yousoon.
