It's time for Let's Talk in English.
Hello, everyone.
We hope that you are ready for today's lesson.
My name is Nathan.
And we also hope that you did a little bit of stretching before today's lesson.
Why? Because we're starting a new topic today - SPORTS.
And our lesson is called Play Ball!
Play Ball!
Well, that sounds like fun, doesn't it, Katie?
It does!
Hi, friends, my name is Katie.
When I hear "play ball," I usually think of baseball.
So I wonder who is going to play baseball.
Let's find out in our Let's Begin reading.
Nathan will read it now.
And you can follow along in your magazine.
Let's Begin.
Joe wants more exercise.
So he joined a baseball team.
He loves baseball.
Joe plays first base on the team.
Ken plays baseball, too.
He can play with Joe and his team.
But he needs a bat and a glove.
OK. So let's listen to Joe and Ken in Conversation A.
Joe! Nice uniform.
Thanks! It's my baseball team's uniform.
You're on a baseball team?
Yes. I want more exercise, remember?
And I love baseball.
Great! How often do you play?
We practice on Monday evenings.
And we play games on weekends.
How many people are on your team?
We have 15 players.
Nice.
Let's start by looking at that word because Ken uses it at the beginning of our
conversation.
Ken says, "Nice uniform." "Nice" often means kind.
But we use it in other ways, too.
What does it mean here, Katie?
Well, here "nice" means good or cool.
Ken thinks that Joe's uniform looks cool.
Sometimes we say "nice job," instead of "good job." Or we might say that someone
has a really nice car.
And that also means that it's a good car or looks very good.
I could also say it's a nice day outside.
We should go out and do something.
What should we do, Katie?
Well, Nathan, I think it would be a good time to play baseball.
Baseball.
Oh, that's a good idea because that's our first key word for today.
baseball.
Baseball is a game.
And in baseball, a player hits a small ball called a baseball as far as the
player can.
And then the player runs to get a point for the team.
Katie, have you ever played baseball?
Well, only once or twice.
I'm not very good.
But I have watched a lot of baseball.
Have you ever played on a baseball team, Nathan?
Well, no.
But I did play softball when I was in school.
And softball is a lot like baseball.
We'll talk some more about baseball later.
But now we see Joe's reasons for playing on a baseball team.
Yesterday Joe and Ken were talking about some reasons that Joe is exercising
more.
Now Joe says, "I want more exercise, remember?" So baseball is another way that
Joe is trying to exercise.
And right now I think we need to move on to Conversation B.
What position do you play?
I play first base.
Do you have good players on your team?
Yes. We have some great pitchers.
Does your team win a lot of games?
We're doing pretty well.
We are 5-0.
Wow! You guys are really good!
They're really good.
I just joined the team.
Ah, I see.
Conversation B starts with Ken asking Joe what position he plays.
There are many different jobs on a sports team.
And all the different jobs are called positions.
And Joe answers by saying that he plays first base.
So he plays on first base.
But we would call him a first baseman.
But maybe we should explain that a bit more.
I think we should because we actually have a key word here.
base.
base.
Of course, you see this word inside the word "baseball," so it's very important.
In baseball, there are four small squares that players run to called bases.
They're called first, second and third base, then home plate.
You start and finish at home plate.
So when you hit a ball, you try to run to all the bases so you can score a point
or a "run," as they say in baseball.
It's very important that you run across every base to make sure you get your
run.
So Joe is the first baseman on first base.
But there are second and third baseman, too, of course.
A catcher plays at home plate, but he's also like a baseman.
Joe also talks about pitchers.
A pitcher is another baseball position.
A pitcher throws the baseball to players that are to hit the ball.
Joe says something else that's a little confusing about their team.
"We're 5-0." Now, what does that mean, Katie?
Well, Ken asked if they win often.
And that is Joe's answer.
It means that they have won five games and lost none.
But Joe just joined the team.
So he doesn't think he's helped much yet.
And "join" is our next key word.
join.
It means to become part of something.
Right. You might join a team or a study group.
We are glad that you joined us here today on Let's Talk in English.
And when you join us, you are a part of our show.
You're learning with us.
Now please join us as we look at Conversation C.
Do you play baseball, Ken?
I play sometimes. Why?
Our team needs more players.
Maybe you can join the team.
Maybe. I like baseball.
Come with me to practice tonight.
I can introduce you to the team.
OK. Can I borrow your bat and glove?
Of course.
Great! Let's go!
Right off the bat, we have a Use It sentence in Conversation C.
Joe asks...
Wait, Nathan. Well... you just said "right off the bat." That means right away.
Right off the bat.
Does that phrase come from baseball?
Well, act... actually you're... you're right, Katie.
It uses the idea of a baseball being hit by a bat.
Now this bat isn't an animal that can fly.
It's a key word... a key word today.
bat.
This word is "bat." And a bat is the stick that you need to play baseball.
A player uses a bat to hit the baseball when the pitcher throws the baseball.
And the player who is using the bat is called a batter.
That's easy to remember, isn't it?
Yes, you're right.
A batter uses a bat.
Now let's get back to our Use It sentence.
Joe asks, "Do you play baseball, Ken?" Of course, you can use this kind of
sentence for any sport, not just baseball.
Do you play basketball?
Or do you play soccer?
And you can also use it for other things besides sports, like:
Do you play an instrument?
Or do you play cards?
Try to find a way to use that sentence today.
Ken's answer is: "I play sometimes." And when you do something sometimes, you
don't do it a lot, but you also don't do it just a little.
We also want you to know that Ken could say this answer in different ways.
He can also say: Sometimes I play.
You can put "sometimes" in different parts of the sentence.
That's right.
And he could also say, "I sometimes play." Any of these sentences are correct.
In English, you often have choices.
OK. Now Joe tells Ken that his team needs more players.
He tells him to come with him to practice.
Then he can meet the team.
Ken likes baseball, so he says he will go.
But he does need some things first.
He needs a bat.
You know that word now.
And I think the other thing that he needs is a key word, right, Nathan?
That's right.
Today's key word that we want to talk about here is "glove." Glove.
A glove is something that you put on your hand.
It usually keeps your hand safe, or it might keep your hand warm.
And now it's time to review all of today's key words.
All right. Now it's time to review all of today's key words.
Please say them with us.
baseball.
baseball.
Derrick's favorite sport is baseball.
base.
base.
The baseball player runs around the bases.
join.
join.
Hank joined the math club at school.
bat.
bat.
Jeff has a bat and a ball.
glove.
glove.
Put the baseball glove on your hand.
Very good.
Thanks for repeating those words with us.
And now it's time for a break.
