It's a new week on Let's Talk in English.
My name is Katie.
We hope you are ready for another day of English learning.
Today's topic is HOME.
We are going to talk about things in your home.
The title of today's lesson is New Furniture for Megan.
I look forward to finding out more.
What about you, Nathan?
Me, too.
I think there are a lot of things to learn today.
Hi, everybody. My name is Nathan.
So who needs this new furniture?
Well, our lesson is called New Furniture for Megan, so Megan needs the
furniture.
And now it's time to look at our Let's Begin reading for today.
You can find it in your magazine.
Or you can read along with Katie.
Let's Begin.
Megan needs more furniture.
She only has one chair in her living room!
She wants a nice sofa.
She wants small tables for her things, too.
She wants a table with drawers for her TV.
She asks Susie for help.
Great!
Now are you ready for conversation A?
Here we go.
Where do you buy your furniture, Susie?
Many places.
Why do you ask?
I need more furniture in my living room.
I only have one chair.
You do need more furniture!
Yes! I moved here in December.
But I couldn't buy furniture then.
Can you buy it now?
Yes, I have money!
Then go shopping!
So Megan has a question for Susie.
She wants to know where Susie buys furniture.
She asks, "Where do you buy your furniture?" And that is today's Use It
sentence.
So let's use it.
Where do you buy your milk?
Or, where do you buy your shoes?
Where do you buy your fruit?
Well, Megan just wants to know where Susie buys her furniture.
But what is furniture?
Let's look at this key word together.
furniture.
Furniture is what you put in your house, like a table and a bed.
A house would be very empty without furniture.
When I moved, some of my furniture was too big to get through the door.
So we had to move my furniture into the house through the window.
My apartment only has space for small furniture.
That's OK because bigger furniture is usually more expensive.
What's another kind of furniture, Nathan?
Well uh, a desk is another kind of furniture, or a piece of furniture.
Now remember, you can't add an "s" to the end of this key word.
You can't say "furnitures." But you can say you have many nice pieces of
furniture in your home.
We often use the word "piece" to talk about a kind of furniture.
You know, Katie, I think our next key word is also a piece of furniture.
Oh, you're right.
Megan needed more furniture because she only had a chair.
And that's another key word.
chair.
A chair is a piece of furniture that you sit on.
There are many kinds of chairs.
Some are small and some are big.
Some chairs are hard and some are soft.
And here are some ways that you can use this word in a sentence.
There are four chairs around the table.
One of the chairs is broken.
Katie, what kind of chair do you like?
Well, I have a big, soft chair at home that I like to relax in.
I hope Megan's chair's comfortable.
Megan said she has money now.
She can buy other furniture.
Nathan, do you want to buy furniture right now?
Well, I don't have a lot of furniture in my apartment.
I don't need a lot, though, too.
So I don't think I'm going to buy any.
Good answer.
OK, let's see what furniture Megan wants to buy in Conversation B.
I want a nice sofa.
Yes. A sofa is important in a living room.
My living room is big.
I can get a big sofa.
And buy more chairs.
Get some small tables, too!
Yes. Then I can put my things on the tables.
Where are your things now?
They are on the floor!
That's not good.
From this conversation, we know what kind of furniture Megan wants to buy.
She wants to buy a nice, big sofa because she has a big living room.
But what is a sofa?
It's a key word.
sofa.
sofa.
A sofa is another kind of furniture that you can sit on.
It's longer than a chair, and usually very comfortable.
Do you own a sofa, Katie?
Of course. I love my sofa.
Let me make some sentences with this word.
I sit on my sofa when I watch TV.
Sometimes I take naps on my sofa, too.
That's right.
Sofas are good for lots of things, especially if you have guests.
But Susie says Megan should also get some other things, like chairs and our next
key word - table.
table.
A table is another kind of furniture.
Some tables are for eating, some are for working.
And other tables are just for putting things on, like a TV or some magazines.
Let's use this word "table." I left my keys on the table.
My table is not big enough for lots of people to use.
The size of my table is good for four or five people.
And I have a big round dinner table in my house.
I also have a long table in front of my sofa.
It's called a coffee table.
Katie, do you remember why Megan would like to buy some tables?
Well, I think she said it was so she had a place to put her things.
Right now she's putting her things on the floor.
She really needs some more furniture.
I think so, too.
It's not good to keep things on the floor.
It would probably look a little messy.
What kind of tables do you have in your apartment, Katie?
Well, I have a kitchen table.
It's a big table where I eat.
And I have a table next to my bed so I can put my books or my computer on top of
it.
What about you, Nathan?
Well, I do have a table to eat on.
And I also have a table in my room where I use my computer.
But we usually call that a desk.
OK, let's see what else Megan and Susie are going to talk about in Conversation
C.
Do you have a TV?
Yes. It's on the floor, too!
Then you need something for your TV!
I know. I want a long table with drawers.
Good idea.
Do you need a desk, too?
No. I have a desk in my bedroom.
It's next to my bed.
Oh, good. You have a bed.
You don't sleep on the floor!
Well, it sounds like it really is time for Megan to do some shopping.
She knows what furniture she needs to buy.
And she has enough money, too.
She just needs to go to a furniture store.
Right. If she goes to the store, she won't need to put everything on the floor.
Even her TV is on the floor!
But she wants to buy a long table to put her TV on.
That would look much better.
That's right.
And she wants her long table to have drawers in it.
That would be good.
What? You want to know what drawers are?
Oh, of... of course, because "drawer" is our next key word.
drawer.
A drawer is a space that you can pull out of a table or another piece of
furniture to put things in.
I put magazines in one of my drawers at home.
And sometimes I put books or pens and pencils in other drawers.
I put forks, spoons and knives in one of my kitchen drawers.
Drawers are good for keeping things in.
Sometimes I also put some tools or some pens in the drawers in my room.
But if Megan got a long table for her TV, what do you think that she could put
in her drawers, Katie?
Well, she could put some DVDs, maybe, or games.
Those are good to put in drawers.
Or maybe she could put snacks in drawers, too.
Good idea.
When I watch TV, I often like to eat a snack.
So that would be a good thing to put in the drawers.
It would be good to keep those things near the TV.
I often eat a snack while watching TV.
So that would be convenient.
Wait a minute, Nathan.
A minute ago you said "good idea." Susie said that, too, in our conversation.
If someone thinks of something helpful, we often say, "Wow! Good idea." Nathan,
I think we should probably review today's key words.
Good idea, Katie.
The first key word is: furniture.
furniture.
I need furniture.
I don't have a bed!
chair.
chair.
Please sit on this chair.
sofa.
sofa.
Let's sit on the sofa.
We can do homework.
table.
table.
Your dinner is on the table.
drawer.
drawer.
My desk has three drawers.
Well done.
Great job, everyone.
Thanks for practicing those key words with us.
And we will be rightback.
